Patrick Ewing “very shocked” about Kidd hiring; speaks about his own new coaching job

Lost among the Jason Kidd news (I still can’t believe he was hired!!), was that Patrick Ewing was named Associate (not assistant) Head Coach of the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets.  After being overlooked for multiple head coaching jobs in the past, Ewing’s friend, Michael Jordan, has helped him get one step closer to realizing his dream of eventually becoming a head coach in the NBA.  Earlier today, Patrick Ewing called into the Dan Patrick show and talked about his new position, being “very shocked” by Jason Kidd hiring, working for his friend Jordan, his all-time starting five, the stunning reason he chose Georgetown over UNC, and lots more.

Here’s the tweet Ewing’s son sent last night:

And then a couple of hours ago, he brought it up again.

Of course this became news as soon as Ewing Jr. hit send. Whenever the kids of public figures speak up on behalf of their parents, it draws the ire and attention of fans and the media.  Nowadays, people are quick to interpret the kids’ opinions as a reflection upon their parents, which is not always just.  In this particularly case, Ewing Jr. was simply speaking his mind and sharing the sentiments of many other NBA fans.  I understand his frustrations, especially in an era where multiple head coaches were relieved of their duties despite posting winning records.   Unless you’re rendered speechless by the Kidd hiring, like I am, it’s nearly impossible not to speak out against the decision behind anointing a former player a head coaching job one week after he retires, when it took Ewing almost a full decade to land an associate head coaching  job.  It’s baffling.

With all of the turnover at the head coach level this year, next season is already shaping up to be very interesting!
