Cleveland Caveliers fans are like daddyless kids who fear any father figure who enters their lives will eventually leave them like all the rest. Ever since LeBron James took his talents to Miami, the fear of abandonment remains real for Cavs fans. The emotional baggage is heavy. Unfortunately, Kyrie Irving is now tasked with healing those broken hearts, continuously assuring Cavs fans that he’s in it for the long haul.
Recently Irving made a community service appearance at a Cleveland, Ohio elementary school. During the Q&A portion of the event, a young boy bravely took the mic and asked Irving the question that Cavs fans of every age wonder, “Are you going to leave us like LeBron left us?”
Watch the video to hear Irving’s response.
How could Irving respond with any answer other than no? He saw how well publicly shunning Cleveland and its fans worked for LeBron. Plus, next year, Irving’s contract has a team option that the Cavs will absolutely pick up. Once the 2015-2016 comes around, Irving will be a restricted free agent, allowing the Cavs to match any offer that he receives, including a max contract that will be a minimum of three years. The likelihood that Irving leaves anytime soon is very slim. Whether he’ll finish his career in Cleveland is anybody’s guess, though. When that time comes, Irving will be deep into his career which could either trend up or down, making Irving’s situation a lot less cut and dry like it is now. Regardless of how Irving’s career eventually unfolds, Cleveland fans, and especially that little boy, can rest easy knowing Irving’s there to stay…at least for now.
