The New York Giants, Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets have each experienced early season struggles, much to the dismay of fans. When this happens, the last thing fans want to see are players engaging in too many unrelated team activities during the season. While unreasonable, athletes are expected to eat, sleep, breathe, and shit sports every second of the day, especially when their seasons are spiraling out of control. Anything to the contrary leaves room for fans and team execs to question a player’s commitment and work ethic.
In smaller markets, it’s possible to avoid the media scrutiny and high expectations. However, in New York City, there are loads of high society events to attend on any given night. If athletes have an off night, chances are, they’ll find time to make an appearance. After all, the infinite amount of off-the-court/field opportunities is what attracted them to the Big Apple in the first place. Add social media to the equation and athletes are omnipresent. They’re never out of our sight, sometimes against our wishes.
As a Knicks fan, that’s how I’m currently feeling about Carmelo Anthony & Co., and I’m sure Giants and Brooklyn Nets fans can relate. Nothing draws an eye roll or heavy sigh from me more quickly than seeing losing athletes out and about cheesing for the cameras, as if they’re headed to Disney World.
Yet, that’s exactly what occurred last night. Star players from the Giants, Knicks, and Nets attended the 10th Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards dinner where designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osbourne of Public School, were named the winners of the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. New York Giants Victor Cruz is a client of the menswear line, Public School, and was on hand to show his support. Also joining him were Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Kevin Garnett. Despite their team’s struggles, I will admit everyone’s looking rather dapper. Now if they (save for KG) could only get their on the court/field games to match their fashion game, New York City would be a happier place.
And can you say awkward regarding Melo, Lala, and KG sharing the same air. Yikes!
