OK, this might’ve done it.
I’ve been having a difficult time accepting that MLB season is here. As a New York Yankees fans, the absence of Derek Jeter, the return of Alex Rodriguez, and just the general uncertainty of so much — Masahiro Tanaka’s longterm health, the closer, second base, shortstop, and just a very unimpressive offense — don’t make me all that excited about Opening Day.
After the New York Jets and Knicks seasons, I need a sports success story; but have little faith that the Yankees will be able to deliver that for me. Until yesterday, I’ve done my best to ignore any Spring Training reports, just because. But Tuesday night, they finally grabbed my attention!
The team had a little bit of fun recreating the famous Babe Ruth scene from a childhood favorite, “The Sandlot.” Brett Gardner, Chase Headley, and Dellin Betances have standout roles as Scotty Smalls, Timmy Timmons, and Betram Grover Weeks. Also, Didi Gregorius, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, and CC Sabathia join the cast as Tommy Timmons, Squints, Ham Porter, and Kenny DeNunez. It’s perfect.
And for comparison sake, here’s the original scene.
So, so good!
There’s been a lot of talk about the “culture and identity” of the Yankees after longtime captain Derek Jeter’s retirement. But if this is the new direction of the team, I can get with it. Teams should have fun and bond in a positive way during Spring Training. How this translates to wins and losses has yet to be seen, but this is a good start.
