Redemption that’s sweet as gold.
After Team USA’s women’s 4x100m relay team found themselves out of and then back in the final race, you knew this could only end one way. With them returning home with gold. And no surprise here, they did it!
In super impressive fashion, Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, English Gardner, and Tori Bowie, did it on the competition. From Lane 1. Lane 1, y’all! Why does that matter? Because the curves from Lane 1 are not kind to runners. It slows sprinters down, giving them a disadvantage compared to runners in the middle lanes who have more of a straight path ahead of them. But #kanyeshrug, because Team USA slayed anyway. Bowie, now the proud owner of three Olympic medals — gold, silver, and bronze — brought up the rear. She blazed a path to glory that saw second-place Jamaica and Shelly Ann Frayser-Price eating her dust.
Ha! Look at Gardner celebrating around the :13 second mark. She already knew what it was.
Here are the final times: USA – 41.01 seconds, Jamaica – 41.36 seconds, and Great Britain – 41.77 seconds.
With this victory, and another gold medal, Felix, 30, became the first U.S. female track & field athlete to win five gold Olympic medals. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade. Also, Bartoletta returns home with two gold medals, and Gardner, one.
