2013 MET Gala: Sports Edition

May 7, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

tom-brady-is-embracing-the-punk-theme-at-the-met-gala

Last night, A-listers and some not so A-listers, attended the 2013 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This year’s theme, Punk: From Chaos to Couture, was cause for celebrities to push the envelope and tap into their inner rocker chic with bold eye makeup, short hemlines, loud patterns, and hard and soft embellishments.  As usual, there were a lot of hits and, of course, some major misses on the red carpet.

Just like last year, I bring you a roundup of the athletes and celebrities who represented the sports world.  This year’s list included Mrs. Shawn Carter, Lala Anthony, Lindsey Vonn, Tiger Woods, and many more.

Click the pictures below to view the slideshow and see the sports world’s biggest fashion winners and losers from last night.

For the third straight year, Beyonce wore a head turning Givenchy look. But unlike last year, this was a complete miss for me. Honestly, I don't know where to begin. The leather strapless top, 1990s style belt, gold paisley printed skirt with matching gloves and thigh high boots were just doing way too much. Normally I'm all in favor of over the top looks, but this is taking it too far. I refuse to believe Beyonce woke up this morning, saw pictures of herself and thought, "I did that!" Refuse!

And here's the train, which looks like it's being engulfed by flames.

This is the kind of look I'd expect from this couple, boring. Tiger's standard black tux is screaming to be tailored. Meanwhile, Lindsey's white dress with two sheer panels was also a major disappointment. They look happy though, so that's something!

The Lanvin teal blazer on Victor is a nice pop of color. And I love when women take a chance and wear pants on the red carpet. Elaina looks comfortable, confident and chic in her Naeem Khan beaded jacket, tafetta cigarette pant, and open ballskirt.

Lala rocked a red satin slip Zac Posen gown which beautifully accentuated her curvy, yet slim and tone figure. I also appreciated her blonde, straight locs. The new do was a refreshing look on her. I just wish she looked a little more alive in the face.

I would slander Amar'e for attending the MET Gala on a "school" night, but since he's not expected to return to the lineup until Game 3, I guess I'll let it slide. Plus, he and his wife looked amazing on the carpet and I'm happy we didn't miss this moment. Amar'e wore Calvin Klein. The plum blazer with extra sheen, black slacks and sneakers seemed a bit casual at first, but since he's an athlete and the theme was punk, I believe it's appropriate. And his cute, pregnant wife, Alexis, is a perfect vision of how to successfully pull off a couture maternity look on the red carpet. The feathered frock and matching lashes show that Alexis might be pregnant but she remains just as glamorous as ever.

For the second year in a row, Rooney Mara wore Givenchy. Since Mara's aesthetic is regularly punk or goth, this year's theme was right up her alley. And I believe she nailed it. The white sheer, zipped bodice, strong shoulder, and scalloped hem felt surprisingly romantic, delicate, and extremely feminine. Also, her usually pale skin, dark lip, and slicked back hair was right on trend for "Punk". I loved everything about this look.

WATCH: Damian Lillard x A$AP Rocky for adidas #QuickAintFair ad

May 2, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Damian Lillard, of the Portland Trailblazers, is having the best week ever.  The newly crowned NBA Rookie of the Year, is also featured in a new adidas spot, #QuickAintFair, along side the Washington Wizards John Wall, Philadelphia 76ers Jrue Holiday, and Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky.  The spot is promoting the launch of  adidas’ CrazyQuick shoe.

Narrating the #QuickAintFair spot to the beat of his track, Goldie, A$AP tells us about the mythical Quick family who dominated the competition due to the unfair advantage that lived in their shoes.

This spot had me at Goldie, one of my favorite tracks off Long.Live.A$AP.  But beyond that, watching the three young stars of the NBA stunt and demonstrate their quick footwork, spin moves, and crossovers are pretty nice payoffs too.

The CrazyQuick dropped yesterday and is available in five colorways:  Metallic Silver, Electricity/White, Collegiate Royal/White, Running White, and Medium Lead/White.  They retail for $140.

Melo overtakes LeBron to lead NBA in jersey sales

April 9, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

The NBA just released its latest jersey and merchandise sales.  And the survey says, Carmelo Anthony is number one!  He leapfrogged the league’s reigning MVP and champion, LeBron James, to claim the top spot.   This is just further proof that Melo, the current Eastern Conference Player of the Week, is having a career year.  Melo’s surge to number one also helped the Knicks maintain the number one position in merchandise sales, an honor they’ve held since the start of the season.

Here are some other interesting takeaways:

- Melo jumped from #4 to overtake LeBron at #1.

- Despite not playing all season, Derrick Rose clocked in at #5.

- The rebranding of the New Jersey Nets to the Brooklyn Nets has helped the team’s popularity soar. Deron Williams has the sixth most popular jersey.  Also worth noting is a year ago the Nets were ranked 31st in apparel sales, dead last among current teams plus the now-defunct Seattle Seahawks.  This year, they’re #4.   Look at that Jay-Z effect in action.

- The Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, and Oklahoma City Thunder each have two players among the Top 15 jersey sales.

- Kyrie Irving is definitely the future.  He’s the only second-year player to crack the Top 15.  He’s ranked #11.

- Amar’e Stoudemire was not on the list at the start of the season, but recently emerged at #14.

- Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash dropped out of the Top 15.

Peek Into Chris Paul’s Sneaker Room

March 27, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Jada Paul, Chris Paul’s wife, was on Instagram straight flexin’ recently, showing off her husband’s ridiculously massive sneaker collection, and it’s a sneakerhead’s dream.  CP3′s wall to wall collection is so large, a customized walk-in closet was insufficient.  Instead, Paul transformed an entire bedroom in the couple’s home into the ultimate walk-in closet, which they named, “the museum.” Keep in mind, what you see here is just a snapshot or “portion” of the Jordan Brand endorser’s collection.  We haven’t seen one hard bottom or non-Nike shoe, so no telling how much footwear the fashionable Paul truly owns.

But as enviable of a closet or room this is, I’m sure many athletes, especially basketball players, have rooms that rival Paul’s.  Playing for a brand under the Nike umbrella unlocks access to every colorway or edition in Nike’s entire stock — past, present, and future.

It must be nice, right?

FRESH: LEBRON X LOW, KOBE 8 SYSTEM, and KD V get Easter makeovers

March 13, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

These are dope.

Earlier this week, Nike Basketball unveiled its Easter inspired sneaker designs for its trio of signature kicks, LEBRON X LOW, KOBE 8 SYSTEM, and KD V.  The designs are a play on the youthful tradition of dying and decorating Easter eggs.  Both the KD V and LEBRON X LOW include a soft pastel colorway, while the KOBE 8s have a bolder dip-dyed or color-blocking treatment.

Read on to see what else Nike had to say about each design.

KD_V_Easter_detail

KD V (photo via nike.com)

The KD V features soft blue-green tones and playful paint patterns on the Swoosh, tongue and visible Max Air unit in the heel.  The KD V, Kevin Durant’s most technically advanced shoe to date, combines Nike Zoom cushioning in the forefoot and Nike Air in the heel, along with a Hyperfuse upper and dynamic heel support.

The vivid color-blocking of the KOBE 8 SYSTEM overlays egg-painting technique on Kobe’s signature snakeskin pattern throughout the upper. Innovative Nike Engineered Mesh enables incredible use of color, which is fully leveraged in this edition.  Designed as an extension of Kobe’s foot for his quickness and precision, the KOBE 8 SYSTEM incorporates Nike Engineered Mesh for the first time in a basketball shoe. This upper construction provides a dynamic, ultra-lightweight fit while acting as a canvas for provocative graphic design.

The LEBRON X LOW, LeBron James’s new low-cut signature shoe, continues the celebration of his 10-year partnership with Nike Basketball. The low version debuts in this special colorway, with mint as the base color of the shoe and a graphic collar-lining in Easter-egg hues.  The LEBRON X LOW features a basketball-specific Max Air 360 unit that provides maximum impact protection and a smooth ride. Hyperfuse construction with Flywire technology delivers dynamic containment for optimal performance. The low-cut upper offers lightweight comfort and free range of motion.

LeBron James will have a chance to debut these holiday themed sneakers on Easter Sunday, March 31, when the Miami Heat take on the San Antonio Spurs.  Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant may lace their kicks up a day earlier when they take on the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks, respectively.

With Spring approaching, adding a pop of color is a fresh and hassle-free way to give new life to the classic look of jeans and a t-shirt. If you’re interested in copping any of these signature sneakers, they’re available in select retailers and Nike.com starting March 29.

Are you feeling them?

#ThrowbackThursday: Flo Jo aka the Fastest Woman on Earth!

March 7, 2013 by Shana Renee 2 Comments
Photo via stevelandis.com

Photo via stevelandis.com

In honor of Women’s History Month, I’ve decided to dedicate this month’s #ThrowbackThursday posts to female athletes who have inspired me over the years or have had an immense impact on the sports world.  Today’s post is about a woman who’s done both, Florence Griffith-Joyner aka Flo Jo aka the fastest woman on earth.

While the world marveled at Flo Jo’s unbelievable speed, as a young girl, I was captivated by her beautiful smile, wild mane, sculpted body, signature nails that were at least 4″ in length and stylish one-legged leotard, of course. During the late 1980s, it was rare to see beautiful black women take center stage as the whole world watched along in anticipation of witnessing history.  However, before Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps were must see TV at the Olympics, Flo Jo owned that title and those moments.  Throughout her short professional career, Flo Jo won 3 Olympic Gold and 2 Olympic Silver medals. Twenty five years later, Flo Jo’s world records set at the 1987 Olympic trials for the 100-metre (10.49) and the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the 200-metre (21.34) are still standing and will likely remain untouched.

Although she died from a seizure at the young age of 38, there’s no doubt in my mind that many female athletes today pay homage to her trendsetting ways. When Venus and Serena Williams take center court in their head-turning tennis outfits, all praise should go to Flo Jo for not being afraid to take that risk first. Or when many female athletes arrived at the 2012 Olympic Games with decorative nails and beat faces, I couldn’t help but think they were all channeling their inner Flo Jo.  She wasn’t only a pioneer in sport for her competitive nature, but her beauty, elegance, and refusal to compromise her femininity, too.

Click images below to check out some of her most memorable outfits.

And the 1988 Seoul WR 200-metre Gold medal race (21.34)…

Although her accomplishments were scrutinized, I can’t imagine how much more she would have suffered if social media was around back then.  Before, it was a lot easier to conceal ugly truths from the youth.  With my childhood innocence still intact, I was unaware of the controversy swirling around her at the time.  And I remain happy about that.  Even while preparing this post and researching her life, I dismissed the hearsay about her alleged doping.  I don’t want my fond memories of how she inspired me as a young black girl to be tainted.  Instead, I’m proud that all of these years later, the adult me is still able to connect with Griffith-Joyner’s radiant beauty, grace, and trailblazing style.  To some, her legacy may be marred by steroid suspicions, but to me she will forever reign as the fastest, dopest, baddest chick the track and field world will ever know.

Russell Westbrook Covers Flaunt Magazine

March 6, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

The convergence of sports and fashion is rampant; yet no collective group of athletes have become trendsetters quite like NBA stars.  Their style off the hardwood is often subject matter for blogs, publications, and even in-game commentary.  However, no one is both praised and mocked for his fashion-forward looks more than Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook.  Intentional or not, Westbrook has earned a polarizing reputation for his suave ability to seamlessly crossover from boardroom chic to blipster street.  Even the Godfather of NBA fashion, Walt Clyde Frazier, has recognized the fashion risks taken by the 6’3 point guard.  Regardless, Westbrook’s bonafide style and individuality have launched him to the forefront of top fashion houses and editorials, alike.

On a recent day off, Westbrook was the subject behind the camera lens of Flaunt Magazine, becoming the first athlete to grace the fashion magazine’s cover.  Consistent with his GQ and L’Uomo Vogue spreads, Flaunt captured Westbrook’s flair for bold patterns, bright colors, and everyone’s flavor of the month, leather.  Nothing was off limits for Westbrook as we observe his style morph from high street, retro Air Jordans and canary yellow Levi’s 501 jeans, to high fashion, Polo Ralph Lauren and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Game recognize game.

Here are a couple of flicks from his shoot…

Sneaker Chic: Beyonce, A. Keys, and Teyana Taylor Launch Sneaker Lines

February 27, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

chicks in kicks

Ladies, if you’re not part of the Chicks in Kicks movement, why the hell not? Over the past couple of years, there’s most definitely been a resurgence of chicks lacing up fresh kicks with an emphasis on maintaining their sexy. Admittedly, I didn’t get back on my sneaker game until last year. I reacquainted myself with the trend with a pair of Nike Dunk Sky High wedges. Initially, I was hesitant to ride the sneaker wedge wave, but ultimately couldn’t resist. At 5’0, the opportunity to gain 3″ without sacrificing comfort was every answer to my #shortgirlproblem prayers. They’re equally stylish and casual, and can be paired with ev-er-y-thing. Yes, dresses and skirts too.

But don’t take my word for it, the recent collaborations between female celebs and sneaker brands should be all the convincing you need. Beyonce, Alicia Keys and the ultimate sexy tomboy, Teyana Taylor, have all recently announced or launched a new sneaker line.

Beyonce x Isabel MarantBeyonce, who’s known for rocking out in the fiercest heels, has recently switched her style up and showcased her street style a bit more. Perhaps her husband’s BK influence is rubbing off on her, or maybe chasing after Blue Ivy in sky high Loubs has proved impossible even for her. Regardless, she’s embraced the stylish and comfortable benefits of sneakers. Hence, her collaboration with Isabel Marant and the creation of “King Bey”. The hardest working woman in showbiz partnered with PMK to design a custom pair of Isabel Marant sneaker wedges made from animal skins: stingray, ostrich, calfs fur, crocodile, and anaconda. Per PMK, “…the already impeccable design attitude and the tones of the white mixed with gold stitched details produces a feeling of elegance, mimicking the southern belle’s sweet and fierce persona. Perfectly made describes this design best.” Although they’re not doing anything to support PETA’s animal cruelty agenda, I concur. These croc and snakeskin wedges are fit for a Queen or King (Bey).

alicia-keys-reebok-classics-akw-collection-1Meanwhile, Alicia Keys Beatz launched her inaugural sneaker line in partnership with Reebok last September. She eased into the market with my childhood faves, 5411s aka Reebok Classics, but has since evolved the line to include her latest venture, AKW “Wedge Pack”. Similar to “King Bey”, AKW’s “Wedge Pack”, which made its debut during her NBA All-Star Game halftime performance, is equipped with a hidden wedged heel. But staying consistent with many of Reebok’s other designs, the “Wedge Pack” is constructed from leather, nylon, mesh, suede, and nubuck. And because ladies need choices, the “Wedge Pack” is available in several colorways.

teyana-taylor-x-adidas-originals-harlem-glcAnd last but definitely not least is Teyana Taylor. When it comes to maintaining sex appeal while being swagged out in tomboy gear, no one does it better than the Harlem native. So, it’s only right that she partnered with adidas on the Harlem GLC. Although the hightop sneaker is available in multiple colors, the bronze colorway with the scaly leather texture is a Teyana Taylor exclusive. However, if you want to grab a pair, you’re out of luck. After her NBA All Star Weekend launch, the Harlem GLC’s are all sold out. There are other colors available, though. They retail for $100.

Peep them all.

Dope. But of all the looks, I’m feeling Teyana’s the best. She’s a true sneakerhead, and her unique influence is all over that design. The sneaker is just as bold as many of her fashion choices and I salute that. I also dig her showing love to Harlemworld.

Love it or hate it, it appears the chic tomboy craze is here to stay.

ASE’s Picks of the Week: Blade Runner, Clyde Frazier’s Threads & NCAA’s Shady Business

February 15, 2013 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

ASE Picks_2.15

ASE’s Picks of the Week are up!

Will Oscar Pistorius’ murder charges finally make us think twice about idolizing athletes? On a lighter note, enjoy peeking into Walt Clyde Frazier’s closet in Disdain the Mundane,a 30 for 30 Short Film about the two-time NBA champs style. And finally, since Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel was the latest to get stung by the ACL bug, a lot of questions surrounding the NCAA’s shady insurance policies for student-athletes have emerged. Get into it and have a great weekend!

Photo via Michael Steele/Getty Images

Photo via Michael Steele/Getty Images

Here we go again. Another day, another athlete in the media for misconduct. The culprit? Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius. The crime? Murder. Yesterday, the jarring news that Pistorius was suspected (and now charged) of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, rapidly traveled through the interwebs. During the Summer Olympics, Pistorius was quickly crowned the golden boy of the Olympics for becoming the first double-leg amputee to compete in Olympic’s track & field events. His heartwarming story dominated Olympic coverage and represented hope, perseverance, and determination, everything the Olympics personifies. Despite his meteoric rise, it’s now obvious we didn’t know much about Pistorius, after all. Bruce Arthur’s piece, Oscar Pistorius’ inspiring tale hides ugly side of life and sports, challenges readers to stop reading too much into the media’s one-sided portrayal of athletes.

I support this. The media’s coverage often contains partial truths. Instead, let’s remove the rose-colored glasses and stop impetuously equating an athlete’s superior talent to moral fortitude. Please.

It was incredible that this young boy had trained and persevered and become the first man to run in both the Paralympics and the Olympics. It was a story about human possibility, which is what sports is, at its best. There were stories of how he helped others with disabilities, how he was generous, how he was an icon to people around the world. People were inspired. They weren’t wrong to be.

It’s just that Oscar Pistorius, Blade Runner, wasn’t the whole story. Sports is never the whole story. Lance Armstrong coming back from testicular cancer to win seven Tours de France was not the whole story. Joe Paterno, the learned coach who balanced college football and academics and morality in a way nobody else could, was not the whole story. Manti Te’o's dead girlfriend wasn’t the whole story. Nothing an athlete ever says or does is ever the whole story, any more than your job encapsulates the fullness of your life.

As part of its 30 for 30 Short series, Grantland premiered Nelson George’s Disdain the Mundane, a six-minute video feature of Walt Clyde Frazier’s eclectic style that has uniquely defined him since the ’70s. The short film also reveals what inspired Frazier to build a rich and rhythmic vocabulary and how it’s helped distinguish him from his broadcast peers. After watching the feature, and visiting the shrine to himself at his New York City restaurant, I remain in awe of how Clyde Frazier’s brilliantly managed to turn his narcissism and self-pride into endearing and emulative qualities. Bravo, Sir. Watch Disdain the Mundane and get your style and vocab up.

A lot of the underhanded workings of the NCAA go undisclosed until college basketball’s No. 1 NBA prospect, Nerlens Noel, suffers a season-ending ACL tear and it’s discovered he doesn’t have adequate insurance to protect his future. Due to the NCAA’s gotcha loopholes, Noel’s fate is uncertain. As revealed in the New York Times article, Injury Raises Questions About Insurance for College Stars, Noel is ineligible for the NCAA’s Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program (ESDI) because his injury isn’t career-ending. And had he signed up for the loss-of-value insurance that guards him against a drop in draft position, he would’ve violated NCAA rules for accepting extra benefits for a loan which could cost as much as $40,000. It’s a catch-22.

In a few days, Noel’s projected draft position dropped from one to three. According to the NY Times article, “last season’s top overall pick, Anthony Davis, signed a guaranteed contract worth $16 million, nearly twice as much as the deal for the No. 3 pick, Bradley Beal.” While rehabbing, Noel shouldn’t be forced to choose between returning to Kentucky to earn his top draft spot back or continue with his plan of entering the NBA draft, because millions of dollars are at stake. Injuries are unpredictable and a risky part of the game, and as “student-athletes”, the NCAA should be required to guarantee ALL athletes are afforded the best coverage and protection. Otherwise, the athletes need a union or someone to advocate on behalf of their best interest since the NCAA’s falling short.

Noel, a 6-foot-10 freshman, was projected by many N.B.A. draft analysts as this year’s No. 1 overall selection. That status is much less clear after the injury.

And that has led some to take a critical look at the N.C.A.A.’s policy toward athletes who seek insurance against serious injuries, especially those players who are projected to be high selections in professional drafts.

Why I Love Sports…From A to Z!

February 14, 2013 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

SPORTS

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I thought it was only right that I pour my heart out and gush about my first true love, sports.  Here are the reasons I love sports…from A to Z.

Athletes- Without you, I’d have nothing. Seriously.

Buzzer Beaters- This is a gift and a curse, but regardless of whether my team is on the winning or losing side, I always marvel in disbelief and think what a ride!

120304-lebronkobe-590Clutch Gene-  Hitting a base hit to extend the inning, leading a game-winning drive with less than two minutes remaining, hitting the game-winning shot, or knocking down a pair of free throws, it doesn’t matter the form.  Across all sports, on every level, nothing tops witnessing an athlete in possession of a dominant clutch gene do work, especially when their team needs it most.  When they switch into beast mode and takeover, it’s next level amazing.

Debates- Nothing is off limits because the master manipulator that I am will trap you into a circular discussion that has no finish line.  And when you’re part of a family who debates every. single. thing, you become extremely good at it.  Even if by chance I’m proven wrong, which happens exactly never, but hypothetically speaking, I’d stand my ground like the true champion I am.  Test me.

ESPN Highlights- I was raised on Romper Room, The Cosby Show, and ESPN Highlights.  But being content watching the same ESPN highlights back to back for hours without interruption is the epitome of living the dream…unless my team lost in the playoffs or championship. Because if that’s the case then it’s the epitome of living a nightmare.  And at that point, ESPN ceases to exist in my universe.  I’m off that for a week…at least.

Food and Beer- Having a legit excuse to unapologetically and publicly over indulge in terrible, greasy artery clogging food and multiple rounds of beer is a major win.

Gus Johnson-  If you mic’d me up in a booth and let me loose, I could only hope the undying passion I have for the game would be as illuminating as it is when Gus is making the calls.  In a time when TV personalities are so caught up with appearing fair and balanced, it’s relieving to see a pro like Gus go apeshit over a remarkable game-winning play.  He’s a god.

Hi-Fiving- The discomfort caused by having my personal space invaded by strangers is no longer a concern when I’m taking in the action live or at a bar.  Locking eyes with a stranger who shares my team affiliation is the fastest way to win me over and remedy my germophobia.  It’s also the only time I’ll openly engage in the otherwise uncool social expression of hi-fiving.  With every base hit, clutch free throw, or first down, I’m spreading love one hi-five at a time.

Iverson- Cornrows, crossover, rebellious attitude, dripped in diamonds and completely swagged out in jerseys and oversized jeans.  That’s the Iverson I’ve loved since his Hoya days.  And anything the tabloids report about him these days is rubbish.  Miss me with all of it.

Jets Jordan- The Jets vs Jordan?  Not even close.  Despite MJ repeatedly ripping my heart out as a child, and shrugging it off like it was nothing, I appreciate and respect everything he’s done for the game — sports, basketball, and our culture.  He set the bar, eclipsed it, and set it again.  Salute to His Airness.

Knicks- The extreme highs and lows we’ve experienced together taught me what it means to love unconditionally.  I’m your ride or die chick.  Believe that.

article-2260694-16DFECA5000005DC-206_634x422Lionel Messi-  ESPN taught me.  I shed my American ignorance of the beautiful game in 2009 when I worked on ESPN’s World Cup campaign. While the media focused on Christiano Ronaldo, true futbol heads put me on to Messi and I’ve been obsessed with watching him play ever since. His agility, explosiveness, passing ability, and dominance are everything.  If brilliance was a verb, the definition would be Messi.

March Madness- Duh.

Ninth-Inning Rallies- But only when it’s my team doing the rallying.  Otherwise it sucks.

Olympics- The world’s most elite athletes unite on the grandest stage to compete all in the name of national pride.   And we get to watch.  What’s not to love?

Pro Football- Quarterbacks. Offense. Defense. Special Teams. NY Jets. Sacks. Hail Marys. The Build Up. Overtime. Rivalries. Super Bowl. NFL Redzone. Competition. The Hits. Sunday Rituals.  Thanksgiving. Touchdowns. Fantasy Football. Pick 6s. Touchdown Celebrations. And probably a million more.

Quest for Championships- Because at the end of the day, that’s why players play and fans watch them play.

Rivalries- Yankees vs Red Sox. Cowboys vs Redskins. OSU vs UM. Duke vs NC. Auburn vs Bama. Lakers vs Celtics. Federer vs Nadal.  Tennessee vs UCONN.  Real Madrid vs Barcelona.  Bears vs Packers.  The emotions and memories conjured up at the thought of these matchups caused heart palpitations. Did you feel it too?

Streaking and Slumping-  Sports is a game of numbers and recordkeeping.  In order to deliver on that, streaking and slumping is necessary to raise the level of competition and prove the game is evolving as athletes continue to do what’s never been done before.  The good and the bad.  Whether you suck like the Charlotte Bobcats or go on a tear like Lebron James, the games needs it all. John-Starks-the-dunk

The Dunk- Even though Starks and I beefed for years after his dreadful 2-for-18 shooting performance of Game 7 in the NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets, The Dunk is still one of my favorite sports moments EVER!

Underdogs and Upsets- Because you never see it coming.  When powerhouses are dropped by underdogs, we all take an unexpected trip to bizzaro world.  Up is down. Down is up. In is Out. Black is White.  And as crazy as everything appears, I relish in the opportunity to return often because taking a chance on the underdog and watching them actually succeed is pretty awesome.

Vertical Leaps- Yep, I’m reaching here. Get it? Vertical leap…Reach.  Dunking is an art.  Getting enough elevation off the ground, momentum to finish strong, and a solid grip on the ball is way too much hand eye coordination for me to fathom.  How do these dudes do it?

Winning- When I feel the world around me is crumbling, but my team is winning, suddenly everything else seems less important or at least more manageable.  Winning.  Life’s Elixir.

Xs and Os- Talent is important, but having a coach who understands the fundamentals of the game is priceless.  And having one who doesn’t is torture.  And when matched up against each other, it’s a beautiful mess.

Yankees- Kiss the rings.  All 27 of them.

Zone- Not as in Zone defense or endZone, but more like “Don’t let me get in my zone. Don’t let me get in my zone.”  The pure passion, focus, killer instinct, determination, and can’t be stopped(ness) really gets me going!

These are some of the reasons I love sports.  But enough about me, I want to hear from you.  Join the lovefest and share the reasons you love sports below.  There’s nothing worse than being on the receiving end of unrequited love.  So I beg of you, on Valentine’s Day, please don’t be that guy or gal.
