#ThrowbackThursday: Muhammad Ali x Stevie Wonder

What we have here are two legends, two national treasures who are bigger than words…bigger than life itself.  Muhammad Ali and Stevie Wonder.  The year is 1963. The place is backstage at The Apollo Theater in Harlem, USA.  Ali is a young 21 year old and the child prodigy, Stevie Wonder, is the tender age of 13.   Both are in the early stages of their careers. Their contributions to our culture, society, and world were not yet realized. However, based on this picture, it seems both knew they were on the brink of achieving remarkable things, especially Ali.

And the groupie scene?  Heavy. *Insert ‘I got 99 problems but a bitch ain’t one!’ reference here.* Hit me!

Tiger Woods is top athlete on Forbes World’s Most Powerful Celebrity list

May 17, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

See I believe in money, power, respect.  First you get the money, then you get the power, after you get the power, motherf***ers will respect you!- Lil’ Kim

Forbes Magazine agrees.  That’s why they’ve compiled a list ranking the most powerful celebrities in the world.  Here’s background on the list,

With most of our lists we keep it strictly on the money: earnings or net worth. The Celebrity 100 is a little different. This list–which includes film and television actors, TV personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians–is based on money and fame. We define fame as media visibility in print, television, radio and online, plus social media power, which we measure by looking at each celebrity’s presence on Facebook and Twitter. The earnings consist of pretax income between May 1, 2011, and May 1, 2012. Management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted. Forbes has been publishing the list annually since 1999.

Since All Sports Everything is a sports blog, let’s focus on which athletes landed on the list.  But first, here are few takeaways:

-17 athletes made the cut:  2 NBA, 2 NFL, 3 Soccer, 5 Tennis Players, 2 Golfers, 1 MLB, 2 Boxers

- 3 female athletes were included, all tennis players

- Despite Novak Djokovic’s dominant season, he was absent from the list

- Although Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow were the most hyped athletes of the past year, Forbes did not recognize them as powerful

- Alex Rodriguez is the only MLB player on the list.  He may not have any endorsement deals or much media visibility, but who needs that when you signed a $275 million contract? *insert sarcasm here*

Here are the world’s most powerful athletes:

No. 12 Tiger Woods (Golf)

No. 15 LeBron James (NBA)

No. 27 Kobe Bryant (NBA)

No. 31 Roger Federer (Tennis)

No. 32 David Beckham (Soccer)

No. 33 Manny Pacquiao (Boxing)

No. 40 Peyton Manning (NFL)

No, 44 Cristiano Ronaldo (Soccer)

No. 47 Rafael Nadal (Tennis)

No. 48 Phil Mickelson (Golf)

NO. 50 Lionel Messi (Soccer)

No. 52 Floyd Mayweather (Boxing)

No. 60 Tom Brady (NFL)

No. 63 Alex Rodriguez (MLB)

No. 71 Maria Sharapova (Tennis)

No. 77 Serena Williams (Tennis)

No. 87 Li Na (Tennis)

Mayweather Calls Out Pacquiao via Twitter

January 11, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

If there was any doubt that Floyd “Money” Mayweather was ducking Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather attempted to clear the air by calling out Pacman via twitter, yesterday.

Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see.

Or, if you’re a conspiracy theorist and Mayweather hater, you’ll probably interpret Mayweather’s conveniently timed tweets as more posturing considering, on Monday, Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, said a May 5 fight between his client and Mayweather was nearly impossible and a June 9 or 16 date seemed more reasonable.

However, that’s also impossible (and Arum knows it) because Mayweather is due to report to jail on June 1 to serve an 86-day sentence for domestic abuse charges.

Since a May 5th fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao is unlikely to happen, Mayweather’s next opponent will either be Saul Alveraz or Robert Guerrero.  And Pacquiao is looking at Lamont Peterson, Timothy Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto.  Or, in other words, two more fights no one cares about.

Afghanistan’s Female Boxers Begin Fight for Olympic Gold

January 4, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via San Francisco Gate

With the 2012 Summer Olympics quickly approaching, you’ll notice the sports media world ramp up its coverage of nations, teams, and persons of interest.  For example, yesterday, I came across a brief video about Afghanistan’s female boxing team training for the Olympics and setting their sights on a gold medal.

This story took me by surprise.  Call me ignorant, but when I think of Afghan women, the first thing that still comes to mind is them living in an oppressive society, despite the ousting of the Taliban.  But, since Afghanistan’s new found liberation from the Taliban’s tyrannical regime, women are now empowered and somewhat encouraged to not only represent their country, but to do so in a “masculine” sporting event like boxing.

Although, not everyone in the conservative society has accepted the cultural shift.  Some of the women have received threats because of their participation in the sport.  However, their will to compete hasn’t waned.  You’ll quickly recognize the women in the video possess as much pride, dedication, and competitive spirit as you’d expect from any Olympic hopeful.

Reuters reporter Sunita Rappi discusses Afghanistan’s female boxing team as they look to make history in London this summer.

Boxing great, Smokin’ Joe Frazier passed away Monday evening at his Pennsylvania home. Days ago, the media reported that his battle with liver cancer placed him in hospice care. Once word spread, fans offered liver donations. The generous gesture was too late. The legendary fighter, most notably known for defeating Muhammad Ali in the Fight of the Century, was 67. RIP Champ.

Have an hour to kill? Pay homage to Smokin’ Joe and watch him make history against The Greatest.

Whoa Nelly! Vegas Hosting Pacman/Marquez and Iverson Tourney Same Weekend

October 27, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via twitter.com/jalenrose

NBA players and fans aren’t the only ones suffering because of the lockout.  Analysts and commentators are also casualties of  ongoing negotiations.  However, ESPN and ABC analyst Jalen Rose is using the downtime to break into a new sport…boxing.  The avid fan, who’s verbally traded jabs with ESPN First Take’s Skip Bayless, announced he’ll be covering another other Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez HBO PPV rematch for Top Rank and HBO on Nov 12 in Las Vegas.

If you recall, the first fight in 2004, ended in a draw.  And the second bout in 2008, was ruled in favor of Pacman (53-3-2). But, both fights were so close it could’ve gone either way.  The hope among fans is that this time, Pacman and Marquez (53-5-1) will come out swinging so one of the fighters will finally emerge as the clear favorite.

Still not excited?  Check out HBO’s 24/7 series, Saturday at 10pm, to hype yourself for the fight.

Photo via AP

During this same weekend, Allen Iverson is hosting and participating in a four team, two-day basketball tournament…also in Vegas…with NBA athletes.

On Wednesday, he touched down in Sin City to address the media and share details about the event.  According to @andreashale, Amar’e Stoudemire, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodola, Al Harrington, Monta Ellis, David Lee, Stephen Jackson, unsigned rookies and lots more are expected to play!

I don’t know about you, but I would definitely pay money to see AI ball.  It’s been so long since we bore witness to his greatness.  I’m extremely curious to see if he’s still got (a bit of) it, especially since his brief and disappointing stint in Turkey ended because of a calf injury.

But, on the other hand, I’ll be very sad if the reports out of Vegas confirm the inevitable…he’s lost a step.  I know he’s human, and 36, and hasn’t played since 2010, but a little piece of me would like to believe he’s immune to father time.  Plus, I don’t want him to get shown up by the youngins.  All eyes will definitely be on him and in my opinion, watching AI play is more of a draw than Pacquaio/Marquez.  Been there.  Done that.  Twice.

So, in conclusion, lol, on Nov 12 and 13, Vegas will host a boxing match AND an “NBA” bball tournament.  Remember the last time a number of basketball players descended upon Vegas?  Well, I’ll put it like this, let’s just hope the other Pacman is no where to be found that weekend.  You’ve been warned.

Today’s Tweet: Floyd Mayweather Announces Comeback

June 8, 2011 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

Floyd “Money “Mayweather, 34, (41-0, 25 KOs) hasn’t fought since he destroyed Shane Mosley 16 months ago. But yesterday he announced he’s returning to the ring on September 17 against Victor Ortiz, 24, (29-2-2, 22 KOs).  Excited about his return, he tweeted this message to fans:

But Mayweather’s fans quickly let him know fight they’re interested in seeing is the much-hyped fight between him and Manny Pacquiao.  Some fans responded with the following:

While I agree with the fans’ tweets, I will say that it’s good that Mayweather will be training for a fight.  Since he’s been away from the sport, he’s been a magnet for legal trouble.  Per the New York Times, his rap sheet reads like this:

…he faces misdemeanor harassment charges accusing him of threatening two homeowner association security guards outside his Las Vegas home. The charges stem from an October dispute over parking with guards in the gated community where the prizefighter lives.

Mayweather also faces a September trial on a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from allegations he poked a 21-year-old guard in the face during a separate argument over parking tickets in November.

Mayweather needs to stay out of trouble, avoid jail time, and use this fight as a tune-up for Pacquiao.  Ortiz, like Pacquiao, is a southpaw which means that Mayweather may still have Pacman on his radar.

Keep hope alive, sports heads, a Pacman-Money Mayweather fight may take place after all!

The World’s 50 Highest-Paid Athletes via Forbes

June 2, 2011 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

I love Forbes and Time Magazine for always compiling lists that rank athletes according to most paid, most influential, most powerful and so on and so forth.  After all, our society is overly obsessed with debating an athletes place in history among his/her peers. And when you start talking money and salaries, the conversation escalates to another level.  For example, I still have occasional flashbacks when I think about Allan Houston’s $100 million contract and how it handicapped us (the Knicks) for years! And the fact that he’s still on the Knicks payroll as the Assistant GM doesn’t help matters…at all! But I digress…

Let’s refocus and take a look at Forbes’ World’s 50 Highest-Paid Athletes.

Here are the highlights:

  • The list takes into consideration salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees, licensing and endorsement income in the 12 months ending May 1. Taxes and agents’ fees are not deducted.
  • Despite Tiger Woods losing a number of sponsors, dropping to 13th in the world, and riding out a 20 month losing streak, he still is the highest paid athlete thanks to Nike and EA.  Over the past year, he earned $75 million.  Kobe Bryant came in second place at $53 million.  Not even close.
  • The NBA includes the most athletes of any sport, 15.  And some surprises on the list include Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, and Michael Redd.  Thank God the NBA’s CBA is up for renegotiation!  The fact that they’re included on this list is ridiculous!
  • Floyd Mayweather experienced the largest dip in earnings compared to last year.  In 2010, Mayweather ranked #2 on the list at $65 million.  However, he failed to even make the list this year due to not fighting in over 13 months.  Pacquaio, on the other hand, clocked in at number 24 with $25 million.
  • Maria Sharapova was the only athlete representing for the ladies, for the second year in a row.

Here’s the complete list:

1. Tiger Woods, Golf, $75 Million

Roy Jones Jr KO’d; B. Hop Becomes Oldest Champ!

May 23, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Over the weekend, two 40+ boxers stepped in the ring, but not against each other.  Roy Jones Jr. (54-8, 40 KOs) took on Denis Lebedev (22-1) and Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) fought Jean Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KOs) for the third time.  While B.  Hop showed he’s still got it, the outcome of Jones’ fight was painfully different.

Here’s footage of a 46 year old B. Hop going at it with Jean Pascal.  The fight lasted a full 12 rounds, but Hopkins dominated the majority of the fight and eventually won by unanimous decision to win the WBC light-heavyweight belt. Hopkins also won the honor of becoming the oldest boxer to win a major championship.  George Foreman previously held this record at the age of 45.  After the fight, Hopkins told HBO’s Max Kellerman that he has no intentions of retiring anytime soon and will fight competitively until he turns 50.

Over in Moscow, Roy Jones Jr., 42, took on Denis Lebedev (22-1) and didn’t fair as well as Hopkins.  Jones Jr., who was arguably the best pound for pound fighter in his prime, was knocked out in the 10th and final round of their non-title cruiseweight fight making this his third consecutive loss.

Make sure you watch the replay around the 1:00 mark.  Warning, it’s not pretty.

Today’s Sports Tweet: Zab Judah on Manny Pacquiao

May 17, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

After Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO) defeated Shane Mosley in a unanimous decision on May 7, the focus shifted to which fighters are next in line to square off against the Welterweight Champion.  Since talks have stalled between Floyd Mayweather, another rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO) seems likely for this November.

However, if Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO) had his way, he and Pacquiao would face each other sooner than a speculated 2012 PPV fight. He believes that no one is excited to see Pacquiao and Marquez square off for the third time, and that a Pacquiao-Judah bill would be more entertaining.

If Judah is serious about getting in the ring with Pacquiao, he needs to accept the fight against WBA champ, Amir Khan and win.  Khan has been vocal about wanting to fight Judah, but Judah has dismissed the matchup saying, “No disrespect to Amir Khan but it’s a step down for myself.  He’s a kid.  You know what I’m saying?  He’s just coming on to the scene.”

Instead, Judah maintains that the most logical move for himself would be to fight Pacquiao and yesterday tweeted the following:

December 31, 1969 8:00 pm viaReplyRetweetFavorite
@

What do you think?  Does Judah stand a chance against Pacquiao?

Judah’s speed could be a challenge for Pacquiao, but I don’t see Judah being able to counter Pac’s power.  And this video of Judah getting knocked out by Kosta Tszyu doesn’t help change my mind.
