2013 MET Gala: Sports Edition

May 7, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

tom-brady-is-embracing-the-punk-theme-at-the-met-gala

Last night, A-listers and some not so A-listers, attended the 2013 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This year’s theme, Punk: From Chaos to Couture, was cause for celebrities to push the envelope and tap into their inner rocker chic with bold eye makeup, short hemlines, loud patterns, and hard and soft embellishments.  As usual, there were a lot of hits and, of course, some major misses on the red carpet.

Just like last year, I bring you a roundup of the athletes and celebrities who represented the sports world.  This year’s list included Mrs. Shawn Carter, Lala Anthony, Lindsey Vonn, Tiger Woods, and many more.

Click the pictures below to view the slideshow and see the sports world’s biggest fashion winners and losers from last night.

For the third straight year, Beyonce wore a head turning Givenchy look. But unlike last year, this was a complete miss for me. Honestly, I don't know where to begin. The leather strapless top, 1990s style belt, gold paisley printed skirt with matching gloves and thigh high boots were just doing way too much. Normally I'm all in favor of over the top looks, but this is taking it too far. I refuse to believe Beyonce woke up this morning, saw pictures of herself and thought, "I did that!" Refuse!

And here's the train, which looks like it's being engulfed by flames.

This is the kind of look I'd expect from this couple, boring. Tiger's standard black tux is screaming to be tailored. Meanwhile, Lindsey's white dress with two sheer panels was also a major disappointment. They look happy though, so that's something!

Every year, this couple shines. They're both too hot for words. And Giselle's short hem and grommet details show just enough skin without looking sleezy. She always gets it right.

The Lanvin teal blazer on Victor is a nice pop of color. And I love when women take a chance and wear pants on the red carpet. Elaina looks comfortable, confident and chic in her Naeem Khan beaded jacket, tafetta cigarette pant, and open ballskirt.

Lala rocked a red satin slip Zac Posen gown which beautifully accentuated her curvy, yet slim and tone figure. I also appreciated her blonde, straight locs. The new do was a refreshing look on her. I just wish she looked a little more alive in the face.

I would slander Amar'e for attending the MET Gala on a "school" night, but since he's not expected to return to the lineup until Game 3, I guess I'll let it slide. Plus, he and his wife looked amazing on the carpet and I'm happy we didn't miss this moment. Amar'e wore Calvin Klein. The plum blazer with extra sheen, black slacks and sneakers seemed a bit casual at first, but since he's an athlete and the theme was punk, I believe it's appropriate. And his cute, pregnant wife, Alexis, is a perfect vision of how to successfully pull off a couture maternity look on the red carpet. The feathered frock and matching lashes show that Alexis might be pregnant but she remains just as glamorous as ever.

For the second year in a row, Rooney Mara wore Givenchy. Since Mara's aesthetic is regularly punk or goth, this year's theme was right up her alley. And I believe she nailed it. The white sheer, zipped bodice, strong shoulder, and scalloped hem felt surprisingly romantic, delicate, and extremely feminine. Also, her usually pale skin, dark lip, and slicked back hair was right on trend for "Punk". I loved everything about this look.

Tiger Woods is top athlete on Forbes World’s Most Powerful Celebrity list

May 17, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

See I believe in money, power, respect.  First you get the money, then you get the power, after you get the power, motherf***ers will respect you!- Lil’ Kim

Forbes Magazine agrees.  That’s why they’ve compiled a list ranking the most powerful celebrities in the world.  Here’s background on the list,

With most of our lists we keep it strictly on the money: earnings or net worth. The Celebrity 100 is a little different. This list–which includes film and television actors, TV personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians–is based on money and fame. We define fame as media visibility in print, television, radio and online, plus social media power, which we measure by looking at each celebrity’s presence on Facebook and Twitter. The earnings consist of pretax income between May 1, 2011, and May 1, 2012. Management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted. Forbes has been publishing the list annually since 1999.

Since All Sports Everything is a sports blog, let’s focus on which athletes landed on the list.  But first, here are few takeaways:

-17 athletes made the cut:  2 NBA, 2 NFL, 3 Soccer, 5 Tennis Players, 2 Golfers, 1 MLB, 2 Boxers

- 3 female athletes were included, all tennis players

- Despite Novak Djokovic’s dominant season, he was absent from the list

- Although Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow were the most hyped athletes of the past year, Forbes did not recognize them as powerful

- Alex Rodriguez is the only MLB player on the list.  He may not have any endorsement deals or much media visibility, but who needs that when you signed a $275 million contract? *insert sarcasm here*

Here are the world’s most powerful athletes:

No. 12 Tiger Woods (Golf)

No. 15 LeBron James (NBA)

No. 27 Kobe Bryant (NBA)

No. 31 Roger Federer (Tennis)

No. 32 David Beckham (Soccer)

No. 33 Manny Pacquiao (Boxing)

No. 40 Peyton Manning (NFL)

No, 44 Cristiano Ronaldo (Soccer)

No. 47 Rafael Nadal (Tennis)

No. 48 Phil Mickelson (Golf)

NO. 50 Lionel Messi (Soccer)

No. 52 Floyd Mayweather (Boxing)

No. 60 Tom Brady (NFL)

No. 63 Alex Rodriguez (MLB)

No. 71 Maria Sharapova (Tennis)

No. 77 Serena Williams (Tennis)

No. 87 Li Na (Tennis)

Click here for the complete list.

The World’s 40 Most Valuable Sports Brands via Forbes

October 4, 2011 by Shana Renee 3 Comments

Photo via apparelday.com

Forbes Magazine recently released a list compiling the 40 Most Valuable Sports Brands in the world.  The list values the top 10 brands among four distinct categories:  business, events, athletes, and teams.  Here are some key takeaways and interesting thoughts:

- According to Forbes, Nike is the most valuable sports brand in the world.  Not necessarily breaking news.  But what is interesting is that six of the top 10 most valuable athlete brands hold Nike endorsements:  Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo and Maria Sharapova.

- Yes, despite Tiger Woods being ranked No. 51 in the world, he still has the most valuable brand of ALL athletes.  However, it is worth noting over the past year, the Woods brand has considerably decreased in value, from $82 million to $55 million.  When Woods was at the top of his game, his brand’s strength was so untouchable that a $27 million decrease hasn’t removed him from the No. 1 spot.   Roger Federer is ranked No. 2 at $29 million.

- The TV network business is big business.  Four of the top 10 most valuable business brands are TV networks.  ESPN is ranked No. 2., in large part because of their hefty $4.08 subscriber fee, which is the highest among basic cable channels.  And although ESPN’s tagline is the Worldwide Leader in Sports, truth is they don’t have a major presence in Europe. Sky Sports, ranked No. 4, is the dominant network over there.  YES Network and MSG, both serving the tri-state area, are the only two regional sports networks (RSN) that made the list.  YES Network is the most-watched RSN and has the second-highest subscriber fee at $2.80.

- Considering Under Armour is less than 20 years old and began selling a niche product, it’s rather impressive that they rank among the Top 10.  Major props to Under Armour founder Kevin Plank.  Brands are always trying to create that “it” factor that will propel it to the next level.  Under Armour not only captured that in a short while, but they’re closing the gap on Reebok, a brand that’s existed since 1895. Speaking of Reebok, remember they’re owned by Adidas, so that’s also something to consider when comparing the sports apparel brands.

- While the NFL (Super Bowl) and MLB (World Series and All Star Events) both have events ranked among the Top 10, the NBA is noticeably absent.  This is interesting because the NBA’s global footprint is the largest compared to other American sports leagues, yet, they’ve failed to capitalize off the globalization of the brand when it comes to the NBA Finals and NBA All-Star Game Weekend. Major fail.

- The New England Patriots made the list for the first time, with a brand value of $146 million.  Forbes credited their local media revenue and ancillary events at Gillette Stadium for the boost.  The Pats replaced the NY Mets.  Mounting debt due to ponzi scheme struggles is the cause of the Mets falling off the list.

- Six of the top 10 most valuable team brands are soccer and I predict that over time this number will continue to grow as European soccer receives more airtime on the major networks over here in the States.

Steve Williams hits Tiger where it hurts most, on the course, in his pockets!

August 8, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Andy Lyons/Getty Images

If you’ve followed the Tiger Woods-Steve Williams saga then you know that this weekend’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational was worth watching for a couple of reasons.

One, all eyes were on Woods to see how he’d perform since returning to competition after withdrawing from the Players Championship in May.  And, two, this tournament marked the first time Woods and Williams would (kind of) face off since Woods fired Williams in late July.  Would Williams have similar success with his new boss, Adam Scott, or was his success all driven by Woods?

Welp, after Woods and Williams won 13 major titles and 63 PGA tours together, it appears that Williams hasn’t missed a beat.  In his first full time gig as Scott’s caddy, the new duo won their first title together.  Scott won the tournament by four strokes, while Woods tied for 37th place.

Following the tournament, Williams was interviewed and said, ”I’ve caddied for 33 years and 145 wins and that’s the best win I’ve ever had. The fans have been unbelievable. It’s the greatest week of my life caddying and I sincerely mean that.”

Since being fired by Woods, Williams has played up the role of victim, but yesterday’s comments may have vilified the famous caddy.  His interesting choice of words, “best win I’ve ever had”, grabbed everyone’s attention because it appeared that Williams lost himself in the moment by selfishly declaring Adam Scott‘s win, his win.  Williams’ comments rubbed many fans, golfers, and sports journalists the wrong way.  After all, following the tournament, all of the attention was directed toward Williams, while Scott’s win was an after thought.

Andy Roddick, who’s recovering from his own set of injuries took to twitter and posed the following question:

Has anyone seen the steve Williams interview from after adam scotts win today? Am I missing something? Was steve the one actually playing?
August 7, 2011 10:08 pm via Twitter for iPadReplyRetweetFavorite
@andyroddick
andyroddick

But, for what it’s worth, Scott didn’t seem to mind.  When interviewed, he said, “Obviously, he’s a popular guy around here having won now eight times.  They appreciate him a lot, I guess, and he’s a bit of a character. It was fun to get support. Whether it’s for me or him, I don’t care – it’s the right team.”

That sounds about right, considering they won.  When you’re on top, it’s easy to forgive or ignore actions that would ordinarily seem inappropriate.

Another interesting twist to the story is that Williams’ earnings from yesterday’s tournament is more than 2x that of Woods’ check.  According to CNBC’s sports businessman, Darren Rovell, Williams earned 10% of Scott’s $1.4 million winnings or $140,000, and Woods earned about $58,000.

And if you thought that was bad enough, it actually gets worse for Woods.  Not only did his ego suffer a big blow yesterday, but his pockets also took a major hit with the loss of another major endorsement deal.  Swiss watchmaker, Tag Heur, announced they were officially dropping Woods after he’d been suspended since the details of his scandal surfaced in 2009.  According to the NY Daily News, “the latest lost contract was believed to be worth more than $10 million and brings his total bill of dropped sponsorships to around $25 million.”

As seen with Michael Vick, the best way to rehab a damaged image is to win, win, win, and of course, behave off the field, court, green, or whatever.  The point is, if Woods was working toward reclaiming his #1 spot in the golf world, he’d regain the support of his sponsors.  But, his bouts with injuries, public breakup with Williams, and that hideous beard aren’t helping his cause.

Whether you’re Team Williams or Team Woods, it looks like this “rivalry” will be one to watch until Woods wins another championship, something he hasn’t done in two years.

Today’s Tweet: Is Rory the new Tiger? (sigh…)

June 20, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Just when people thought golf as we’ve known it for the past 15 years had forever changed because of Tiger Woods’ downfall, Rory McIlory hits the scene.

For the past few Majors, McIlory dominated the field, but came up short in the end.  His most memorable collapse happened in April at the Masters where he entered the final round in 1st place, blew the lead, and finished T15.

But, like a true champion, he did not allow himself to choke again.  Instead, he finished stronger than anyone in the history of the U.S. Open, shot 16-under par, and captured his first Major at 22-years-old.

So, now you know what’s next, right?  The Tiger Woods comparisons.

Because Tiger ‘s career seems to be trending downward, everyone wants to praise McIlroy by crowning him as “The New Tiger”.

The always outspoken Skip Bayless from ESPN’s First Take tweeted the following:

It’s on now. @tigerwoods faces his biggest threat ever. Rory finally breaks through, will be hailed as “new Tiger.” Can old Tiger respond?

Isn’t it ironic that Skip Bayless is the biggest LeBron James detractor known and won’t touch the Michael Jordan-LeBron James comparisons with a 10 ft. pole?  But after McIlroy’s won one Major, he’s already predicting he’ll be the next Tiger Woods?  C’mon son, sit down.

I personally believe Tiger still has a little more fight in him and is not going to quietly tap out.  What McIlroy has displayed over the past year is certainly remarkable and refreshing for Golf and its fans, but in no way should he already be considered to be the the next Tiger Woods, who is still the #1 athlete in the world, by the way.

It’s not fair to McIlroy.  He’s done a great job of relying on his game to tell his story thus far, good and bad.  We should celebrate his accomplishment, but also let him continue to cook and define his own legacy.

The World’s 50 Highest-Paid Athletes via Forbes

June 2, 2011 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

I love Forbes and Time Magazine for always compiling lists that rank athletes according to most paid, most influential, most powerful and so on and so forth.  After all, our society is overly obsessed with debating an athletes place in history among his/her peers. And when you start talking money and salaries, the conversation escalates to another level.  For example, I still have occasional flashbacks when I think about Allan Houston’s $100 million contract and how it handicapped us (the Knicks) for years! And the fact that he’s still on the Knicks payroll as the Assistant GM doesn’t help matters…at all! But I digress…

Let’s refocus and take a look at Forbes’ World’s 50 Highest-Paid Athletes.

Here are the highlights:

  • The list takes into consideration salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees, licensing and endorsement income in the 12 months ending May 1. Taxes and agents’ fees are not deducted.
  • Despite Tiger Woods losing a number of sponsors, dropping to 13th in the world, and riding out a 20 month losing streak, he still is the highest paid athlete thanks to Nike and EA.  Over the past year, he earned $75 million.  Kobe Bryant came in second place at $53 million.  Not even close.
  • The NBA includes the most athletes of any sport, 15.  And some surprises on the list include Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, and Michael Redd.  Thank God the NBA’s CBA is up for renegotiation!  The fact that they’re included on this list is ridiculous!
  • Floyd Mayweather experienced the largest dip in earnings compared to last year.  In 2010, Mayweather ranked #2 on the list at $65 million.  However, he failed to even make the list this year due to not fighting in over 13 months.  Pacquaio, on the other hand, clocked in at number 24 with $25 million.
  • Maria Sharapova was the only athlete representing for the ladies, for the second year in a row.

Here’s the complete list:

1. Tiger Woods, Golf, $75 Million

2. Kobe Bryant, Basketball, $53 Million

3. LeBron James, Basketball, $48 Million

4. Roger Federer, Tennis, $47 Million

5. Phil Mickelson, Golf, $46.5 Million

Tiger Woods’ Niece Beats Him to a 2011 Title

April 18, 2011 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

Cheyenne Woods, niece of Tiger Woods and Wake Forest University junior, won the ACC Title yesterday.  Tied for the lead going into the last round of play on Sunday, April 17, Cheyenne shot 68 to finish 5-under 208 and seven shots ahead of second place winner Allie White.

The ACC championship title is Cheyenne’s first win of the 2010-2011 NCAA golf season.  Heading into this weekend’s tournament, Woods was ranked No. 38 in the Golfweek/Sagarin women’s college golf rankings; and was No. 76 in the OWmen’s World Amateur Golf Ranking (administered by the R&A and USGA).

Cheyenne, who’s game was nurtured by her grandfather Earl Woods early on, has been on the golf worlds radar for a while; mostly because she shares the same bloodline as the world’s most famous golfer, uncle Tiger.

However, claiming the ACC Title is sure to propel the talented golfer and rising star atop the rankings.

Yesterday Woods told ACC.com, “Today, I really felt confident all day and knew I could hit the shots that I wanted to.  That was important on this course because the greens are so slick that you have to land the ball in the right spots.”

Spoken like a true Woods.

Men Only: Female Reporter is Banned from Masters Locker Room

April 11, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Upon the conclusion of the Masters Tournament, a huge cloud cast a shadow over what was an exciting weekend.  Yes,  the resurgence of Tiger Woods, the epic collapse of Rory McIlroy, and the stunning victory by South African Charl Schwartzel are all topics of conversation.  But female journalist of The Bergen (N.J.) Record, Tara Sullivan, has stolen some of the limelight after being denied access to the Masters locker room at Augusta National, a male members only club.

Immediately after being denied entry, Sullivan took to her twitter account and said, “Bad enough no women members at Augusta. But not allowing me to join writers in locker room interview is just wrong.”

She later went on to share her side of the story in her The Bergen (N.J.) Record column.

Since Sullivan made headlines, Masters Officials offered her an apology via Augusta National spokesman Steve Ethun which said,

The guard acted improperly in stopping Sullivan, because club policy is to provide equal access to all reporters. The club has no female members, but several female reporters at the tournament confirmed they had made numerous trips to the locker room for interviews in the past without incident.  It should not have happened,” he said. “We will work as hard as we can to make sure it does not happen again.

In all fairness to August National, other female journalists confirmed that they were allowed access to the locker room without incident.  So, it does appear that the security guard, who happened to be female, is 100% responsible.

However, a great preventative measure going forward would be to lift the archaic, uncivilized, and discriminatory “Men’s Only” rule and allow women access to this esteemed course.  It’s 2011.  What a novel idea.
