ESPN and Bill Simmons Are Ambushing CBS/Turner Sports’ March Madness Coverage

March 21, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Because they can’t broadcast the actual games, ESPN struggles every year to find new and exciting ways to cover March Madness.  This year, ESPN finally said eff the system, CBS, Turner Sports and the billions of dollars they paid to own the Men’s NCAA Tournament multimedia rights.

With the help of its golden boy Bill Simmons, ESPN is full on ambushing the NCAA’s pre and post game tourney coverage.  Simmons with a camera in tow, and a few members of his Grantland posse, which includes Jalen Rose, Joe House, and my personal favorite, Rembert Browne, are setting up shop at Simmons’s residence to provide supplementary programming during the tournament.  The coverage will be live streamed at grantland.com/live.

In true Simmons fashion, this rogue experiment won’t include the typical college basketball analysis.  Instead, Simmons and Co. hope to provide a little levity and a more down-to-earth perspective to the wildly unpredictable tournament.  AllThingsD.com quoted Simmons saying,

We want this to feel like a looser, more irreverent studio show. Like a live podcast where people feel like they are hanging out with us while watching basketball. I have no idea if this will work but we like trying new things at Grantland. … the only way we know if something will be successful is by trying. We will talk about things that I assure you none of the traditional shows will be talking about. Office pools, gambling picks, what we are eating, etc. I can also promise you no other studio show has their mother cooking all day Thursday an Italian feast for everyone to eat on Friday’s shows. At the end of the day this really is just a convoluted way of getting ESPN to pay me to watch basketball with my friends. Oh — and now I can write off part of my man cave on my taxes.

Before live tweeting and live streaming became a thing, Bill Simmons live blogged his thoughts during sport and entertainment events.  Fans love his irreverence, insight, humor, and general point of view on sports and pop culture.  Including other popular personalities from his Grantland all-star team like Jalen Rose, Rembert Browne, and Joe House makes a ton of sense.  While Simmons is the grand poobah of this thing, not to be confused with Grand Puba (although he’s a much bigger deal in my world) Jalen, Rembert, and Joe also have their own cult followings.  Whether loved or hated, the supporting trio are pros at provoking reactions, and that’s the kind of entertainment value that would entice you to fire up the laptop and see what they’re up to.

Although live streaming during events isn’t necessarily new, ESPN is making a huge statement by testing the waters.  If the response is positive, there’s nothing to stop them from using this as another property to drive revenue, or inspiring other media entities to do the same.  Well, until a lawsuit is filed or contract terms are updated to include this loophole.

If you’re interested in this sort of thing, the link to check out the live stream is grantland.com/live.  Also, follow their @grantlandlive twitter account so you can stay up to date on when the Grantland team will be streaming.

Right now, they’re tentatively scheduled to go live on Thursday and Friday at the following times:

11:30 a.m. – 12:15 PM/ET
1:30 – 1:45 PM/ET
6:10 – 6:50 PM/ET

Your March Madness Guide to Multi-Screen Viewing

March 18, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment
March-Madness-2011-Logo2

photo via tyandashstand.blogspot.com

Let’s face it, most of you March Madness junkies don’t have the luxury of clearing your work schedules to watch the day games from the comfort of your own home or local dive bar.  Instead, most of you will be forced to schlep to the office, pretend to work as you follow the madness and keep the panic attacks to a minimum as your brackets go up in flames.

Notice I keep saying you? Well, that’s because I do have that luxury.  This is one of those rare instances when the freelance life pays dividends, and yes, I’m cashing out!

Jealous, yet?  Well, don’t be.  There’s absolutely no shame in maintaining a job and collecting a steady paycheck.  After all, you have to find a way to cover the cost of those exorbitant entry fees for your multiple brackets, right?  Plus, the NCAA recognizes how evil bosses can be, and more importantly, how necessary the games are to our health and wellness.

For the third year in a row, the NCAA’s free March Madness Live app has made it extremely convenient for us to follow the action, no matter what we’re doing or where we are.

Two years ago I chose a trip to Portugal over staying put to watch the Final Four and the final game. Although I had to wake up at the crack of dawn to watch the games, nothing stood between me watching Kemba Walker dominate his way to a championship win.  Trust me, the March Madness Live app was everything I needed it to be.

Whether you watched the tourney from your office last year and need a refresher, or if you’re a newbie to following the action on-the-go, here’s all the info you need to multi-task like a pro.

The NCAA’s app March Madness Live is still available for free live streaming across .com, mobile and your tablet (yes, droid users too!) as long as you’re a paying TV subscriber.  To gain access, you’re required to provide your cable subscriber information, but once you’re in, you’ll have access to every live game.  However,  if you’ve cut your TV cord to save a few bucks like many Americans, March Madness Live also allows you to stream up to four hours of content without registering.  The coverage will be available on NCAA.com, CBSSports.com and Bleacher Report along with Google Play and the App Store.

As great as that is, there are times when a wifi connection is shotty or inaccessible, altogether.  That’s when going old school and listening to  the radio becomes a life saver.  Sirius XM Radio will broadcast every game on channels 91, 92, 93, 94 and 95.  If you have XM, the games will be broadcasting on 91, 190, 191, 192, and 85.  If you don’t have either, Dial Global Sports owns the broadcast rights.  Go here to find your local station.

Also, remember the tournament begins Tuesday, not Thursday! TruTV will do the honors of covering the tip off between North Carolina AT&T vs Liberty NC at 640PM/ET.  If you have no clue what channel that is, no worries, just enter your zip code in this handy channel finder.  TruTV is airing 13 games total, so you should get familiar with the network, if you’re not already.

If you’re interested in the Women’s tourney, ESPN has you covered! Coverage of their selection show begins tonight, Monday, at 7PM/ET on ESPN.  Per, SI, “every game of the tournament (63 games) will air on the ESPN networks. ESPN and ESPN2 will present its telecasts in a whip-around format with home market protection through the first two rounds. (ESPN3 will offer first- and second-round games in their entirety as a supplement). The final 15 games, beginning with the regional semifinals, will have national telecast windows on ESPN or ESPN2.”  Please join me in prayer, as I send one up to the basketball gods in hopes we receive a Baylor – Notre Dame final.

For a complete play-by-play of March Madness coverage, go here, here and here.

Now that you’re covered on how to keep track of the action, good luck making your picks.

Enjoy the Madness!

March Madness x ‘Mad Men’ = March Mad Men

March 16, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

The only thing that possibly rivals the anticipation of March Madness, this time of year, is the return of AMC’s hit show, Mad Men.  It’s been almost nine months since last year’s season finale.  So, this supercut created by Original Comedy,  showing the team at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce discussing ‘the madness’, is tantalizing, but mostly awesome.

Mad Men returns with a 2-hour season premiere on April 7 at 9PM/ET on AMC.

ASE’s Picks of the Week: Blade Runner, Clyde Frazier’s Threads & NCAA’s Shady Business

February 15, 2013 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

ASE Picks_2.15

ASE’s Picks of the Week are up!

Will Oscar Pistorius’ murder charges finally make us think twice about idolizing athletes? On a lighter note, enjoy peeking into Walt Clyde Frazier’s closet in Disdain the Mundane,a 30 for 30 Short Film about the two-time NBA champs style. And finally, since Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel was the latest to get stung by the ACL bug, a lot of questions surrounding the NCAA’s shady insurance policies for student-athletes have emerged. Get into it and have a great weekend!

Photo via Michael Steele/Getty Images

Photo via Michael Steele/Getty Images

Here we go again. Another day, another athlete in the media for misconduct. The culprit? Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius. The crime? Murder. Yesterday, the jarring news that Pistorius was suspected (and now charged) of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, rapidly traveled through the interwebs. During the Summer Olympics, Pistorius was quickly crowned the golden boy of the Olympics for becoming the first double-leg amputee to compete in Olympic’s track & field events. His heartwarming story dominated Olympic coverage and represented hope, perseverance, and determination, everything the Olympics personifies. Despite his meteoric rise, it’s now obvious we didn’t know much about Pistorius, after all. Bruce Arthur’s piece, Oscar Pistorius’ inspiring tale hides ugly side of life and sports, challenges readers to stop reading too much into the media’s one-sided portrayal of athletes.

I support this. The media’s coverage often contains partial truths. Instead, let’s remove the rose-colored glasses and stop impetuously equating an athlete’s superior talent to moral fortitude. Please.

It was incredible that this young boy had trained and persevered and become the first man to run in both the Paralympics and the Olympics. It was a story about human possibility, which is what sports is, at its best. There were stories of how he helped others with disabilities, how he was generous, how he was an icon to people around the world. People were inspired. They weren’t wrong to be.

It’s just that Oscar Pistorius, Blade Runner, wasn’t the whole story. Sports is never the whole story. Lance Armstrong coming back from testicular cancer to win seven Tours de France was not the whole story. Joe Paterno, the learned coach who balanced college football and academics and morality in a way nobody else could, was not the whole story. Manti Te’o's dead girlfriend wasn’t the whole story. Nothing an athlete ever says or does is ever the whole story, any more than your job encapsulates the fullness of your life.

As part of its 30 for 30 Short series, Grantland premiered Nelson George’s Disdain the Mundane, a six-minute video feature of Walt Clyde Frazier’s eclectic style that has uniquely defined him since the ’70s. The short film also reveals what inspired Frazier to build a rich and rhythmic vocabulary and how it’s helped distinguish him from his broadcast peers. After watching the feature, and visiting the shrine to himself at his New York City restaurant, I remain in awe of how Clyde Frazier’s brilliantly managed to turn his narcissism and self-pride into endearing and emulative qualities. Bravo, Sir. Watch Disdain the Mundane and get your style and vocab up.

A lot of the underhanded workings of the NCAA go undisclosed until college basketball’s No. 1 NBA prospect, Nerlens Noel, suffers a season-ending ACL tear and it’s discovered he doesn’t have adequate insurance to protect his future. Due to the NCAA’s gotcha loopholes, Noel’s fate is uncertain. As revealed in the New York Times article, Injury Raises Questions About Insurance for College Stars, Noel is ineligible for the NCAA’s Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program (ESDI) because his injury isn’t career-ending. And had he signed up for the loss-of-value insurance that guards him against a drop in draft position, he would’ve violated NCAA rules for accepting extra benefits for a loan which could cost as much as $40,000. It’s a catch-22.

In a few days, Noel’s projected draft position dropped from one to three. According to the NY Times article, “last season’s top overall pick, Anthony Davis, signed a guaranteed contract worth $16 million, nearly twice as much as the deal for the No. 3 pick, Bradley Beal.” While rehabbing, Noel shouldn’t be forced to choose between returning to Kentucky to earn his top draft spot back or continue with his plan of entering the NBA draft, because millions of dollars are at stake. Injuries are unpredictable and a risky part of the game, and as “student-athletes”, the NCAA should be required to guarantee ALL athletes are afforded the best coverage and protection. Otherwise, the athletes need a union or someone to advocate on behalf of their best interest since the NCAA’s falling short.

Noel, a 6-foot-10 freshman, was projected by many N.B.A. draft analysts as this year’s No. 1 overall selection. That status is much less clear after the injury.

And that has led some to take a critical look at the N.C.A.A.’s policy toward athletes who seek insurance against serious injuries, especially those players who are projected to be high selections in professional drafts.

Athletes tweet reactions to ESPN’s ‘Broke’

October 3, 2012 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

After last night’s premiere of Broke, I took to twitter to see what the general consensus was among athletes.  Did they feel it accurately portrayed some of the challenges they face in becoming a millionaire overnight?  Did they identify with the excessive lifestyle Andre Rison, Keith McCants, and Leon Searcy lived? Will it impact how they spend their money going forward? Or, did some continue to think, “that’ll never be me?”

Well, the truth is…it was mixed. Here are some of the best twitter reactions during and after Broke.

Some athletes believed the doc was a cautionary tale and encouraged current and aspiring professional athletes to tune in:

Yesterday I wrote I was disappointed in the doc and was interested to see how it evolved in the past few months, if at all.  And some of ASE’s readers reached out to ask if my opinion changed.  While they beefed up the list of experts to provide more context for viewers, overall, I still believe it was too surface and a huge disappointment.  My reasons for feeling this way are overwhelmingly long, but if you reached out privately, I’d be happy to discuss.  As I mentioned, I’ve done a ton of research on this topic, including interviews with athletes and sports professionals, and I know it doesn’t just start and end with athletes overspending.  That’s oversimplifying a very complex issue.

Also, I don’t believe athletes flippantly detailing their outrageous spending habits does anything to change this culture among athletes.  If Billy Corben thought using brash personalities would ignite dialogue about a taboo topic, then perhaps the documentary was a success.  But the manner in which the content was disseminated won’t do much to decrease the rate at which athletes mismanage their money and ultimately go broke.

And quite frankly, I’m surprised by athlete reactions.  I don’t think their community was portrayed in a positive way at all.  I’ve always felt the media reports these stories at nauseum not to inform the general public about the pitfalls athletes encounter, but to exploit them.  Broke was no exception.

I could go on and on, but I won’t. It’s on record that Broke was probably my least favorite of the 30 for 30 series so far.  But I’ll definitely be tuning in for next week’s 9.79* doc about track and field at the 1988 Seoul Games.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the doc. Sound off in the comments below.

#ThrowbackThursday: The first episode of SportsCenter

September 13, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via SportsandPR1.wordpress.com

This week’s Throwback Thursday post is dedicated to ESPN’s flagship program, SportsCenter.

ESPN debuted almost 33 years ago to the day on September 7, 1979. And today, the 24-hour sports network is celebrating a record-setting milestone, SportsCenter’s 50,000 episode.  Minutes after Lee Leonard introduced the network, SportsCenter’s very first anchor George Grande promised viewers, “If it takes an interview, we’ll do it. If it takes play-by-play, we’ll do it. If it takes commentary, we’ll do that, too. That’s the way we will function from the ESPN SportsCenter.”  And I’m sure we can all agree that SportsCenter has upheld that promise, while delivering so much more to sports fans.

Three decades later, ESPN and SportsCenter are both permanently embedded in our daily rituals and greater American culture.  Sitting in a coma-like state repeatedly watching the same highlights is an unprecedented level of engagement that us sports fans revel in and couldn’t imagine life without.

I often throw lots of shade toward ESPN because of its shameless self-serving habits, but also must admit, I’m thankful ESPN’s founder Bill Rasmussen dreamed up such a radical and ambitious idea, and most importantly, had the guts and resources to make it happen!

Check out footage from the very first episode of SportsCenter.

Congrats to the Worldwide Leader in Sports. Here’s to another 50K!

Why isn’t ‘Hard Knocks’ on HBO Go?

August 16, 2012 by Shana Renee 4 Comments

Earlier this year, I discontinued my HBO subscription.  Like 98% of the US population, I was searching for ways to reduce my monthly expenses and cutting the cable cord was an obvious first choice.  Though I maintained the basic channels (I’m ’bout it, but not that ’bout it!), all of my premium channels were gone in an instant.  But I was cool with that because most days I channel surfed aimlessly and ultimately settled on classic Seinfeld or Sex and the City episodes anyway.  Plus, with the advent of HBO Go and my dear dad offering to share his HBO Go account info with me, I was set.  In fact, I felt like I was finally getting over on the biggest racket in town, the cable industry…until last week.

Wednesday morning, I planned to launch HBO Go and watch the premiere episode of Hard Knocks: Miami Dolphins, but that didn’t quite work out as planned.  I searched and searched. And searched some more, but was continuously hit with:  “Search Results / 0 results found for ‘hard knocks’.

Excuse me. Come again.

Not only was Episode 1 of the Miami Dolphins season unavailable, but there was also no visible proof HBO had produced six seasons prior to the current one.  I felt like I had completely lost my mind. Next thing I knew, I was asking myself, aloud, “what the hell is going on?”  I never even bothered to search YouTube because I knew there was no way HBO would allow it to live on YouTube if it wasn’t even available on its own site, or so I thought.  But after news of Ochocinco’s arrest overtook twitter last Saturday night, I was subsequently directed to YouTube where Week 1′s full episode had been available since Wednesday.  After hitting play, I suddenly was at peace again.

Phew.  One week down.  Four more to go.

So yesterday, I awoke early to see if the YouTube god’s had blessed me once again by posting the full version of episode 2.  Indeed they had.  But by mid-day it vanished for good.

The same helplessness I felt last week returned.  Fed up, I turned to the ever reliable Google for answers.  I searched, “why isn’t hard knocks on hbo go” and the second listing entitled, “Why You Can’t Watch the Best Show on HBO on HBO Go“ yielded the following information:

It’s a co-production with NFL Films, and NFL Films owns the show’s digital rights, including mobile rights. And HBO Go, for the purposes of rights deals, is considered a mobile service.*

Translation:  it’s about money.  Duh.

And yet another example of how powerful the NFL and its content truly are.  If there were ever an entity able to son a property as mammoth as HBO, it’s the almighty NFL.  After all, ESPN agreed to pay $2 billion annually for Monday Night Football and expanded NFL digital rights because it’s essential to its “serve the fan everywhere” business model.  But for HBO, extending Hard Knocks‘ rights to HBO’s digital platforms is a nice to have.  Reminder (to self), HBO Go is a complementary service offered to its subscribers, who are otherwise known as PAYING customers.  Something I am not.  So, when I think about this rationally, missing Hard Knocks isn’t the end of the world, especially considering how often I consume all of HBO’s other programming that is conveniently available to me via HBO Go.

The outcome of my query was most certainly a let down, but there’s also tremendous value in simply being informed.  I begrudgingly accept that an HBO subscription is absolutely necessary for me to watch Hard Knocks.  But now I can shift my energy from trying to dream up a masterful piracy plan, to finding a local Harlem homey to take pity on my frugal freeloading ass.

The hustle never ends.

When HBO Films agreed to feature the Miami Dolphins on its latest installment of Hard Knocks, I’m sure documenting the antics of Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson was part of the appeal.  His big, showy, and unpredictable personality makes for good TV.  However, considering the unfortunate events that took place over the weekend, they received a whole lot more than hoped.

Thanks to the nimbleness of the HBO Films crew to shoot, cut, and edit compelling footage virtually overnight, viewers had a front row seat to witness Miami Dolphins head coach, Joe Philbin, verbally administer a lethal injection to Johnson, just two days after Johnson was dismissed from the team.  If you missed last night’s episode, like me, fear not.  I swiped the footage from YouTube.  The video below, almost five minutes in length, includes footage from one of the most highly anticipated and memorable moments in Hard Knocks history.

Watch.

Although we’ve seen players get released on Hard Knocks before, I’ll venture to say no other moment packed as much drama.  Be it the starpower of Ochocinco or the severity of the situation and the media circus surrounding it, watching Johnson deliver a halfhearted and untruthful plea to Philbin was, simply put, sad.  In that moment, you get the sense he fears the world of unknowns that await him — career, marriage, endorsements, etc.  The overly cocky Ochocinco that we either love to love, or love to hate, was unusually quiet and at a loss for words. While somewhat expected, watching it play out was palpable.

Also, I must say, from the perspective of a Jets fan, I admire the way Philbin works. His no nonsense approach, straight out the gate, is building a team culture of discipline and focus.  If I were a Dolphins fan, I’d be happy to have him at the helm.  How and if that translates to winning games remains to be seen, but his decisive approach to address and mitigate distractions head on is respected.

Philbin was also very thoughtful during his conversation with Johnson.  Instead of taking the egomaniacal Donald Trump “You’re Fired” route, Philbin expressed they didn’t “mesh”.  Although Philbin didn’t explicitly say Johnson’s personality and poor physical performance on the field (earlier in the episode we see him struggle often) led to Johnson’s demise, had the events over the weekend not transpired, I truly believe it would’ve been a matter of time before the Dolphins dismissed him.  Based on last week’s conversation between Philbin and Johnson, it seemed that Philbin was gently warning Johnson, one false move and you’re done, kid.  Johnson unwittingly tested him and got clipped.

While Ochocinco’s stint on HBO’s Hard Knocks has concluded, his place in the real world of hard knocks is beginning.  But let’s hope he can recover. It would really be a huge disappointment for his actions from the past few days to be the final footnote on his career resume.

Michael Phelps and Sanya Richards-Ross Land TV Gigs

Don’t expect your favorite gold medalist to vanish from the public eye simply because the Olympic Games have concluded.  With the advent of social media, now more than ever, Olympians have an opportunity sustain their Olympic buzz and earn extra dollars away from the track, swimming pool, gymnasium, etc.

They are successfully leveraging social media to build stronger brands, connect with a growing fan base, and prove they have what it takes to drive TV ratings.  Until now, brands have been less bullish about getting in bed with Olympians because of the dreadful four years of dormancy between the Olympic Games.  And it seems more TV executives are taking notice and rewarding them with lucrative deals.

Two Olympians who have impressed and successfully convinced TV networks they’re capable of winning ratings gold are Michael Phelps and Sanya Richards-Ross.  Though Phelps is no stranger to the limelight and has held multiple high profile million-dollar endorsements throughout his career, he’s making first foray into the TV business.  Richards-Ross previously starred in a wedding special on WE tv.

According to GolfChannel.com, the winningest Olympian of all time is the latest athlete to join the Golf Channel’s, The Haney Project.  Starting February 13, you can follow Phelps and Hank Haney, host and professional golf instructor, and see if Phelps has what it takes to conquer the links.  The series will also include cameos from his mom, his friends, and his long time swimming instructor.  Past seasons of The Haney Project have starred Charles Barkley, Ray Romano and Adam Levine.

Meanwhile, according to Deadline, Richards-Ross is the newest female celebrity to join WE tv’s reality TV lineup.  The show, which was shot prior to the Olympics, will give the WE tv audience an exclusive peek into Richards-Ross’ intense training period leading up to the Olympics, as well as the personal life she shares with her husband Aaron Ross, a two-time Super Bowl champion and Jacksonville Jaguar cornerback.

WE tv has not announced a premiere date for the new show.

In other related news, America’s newest sweetheart, Gabby Douglas, is confirmed to join Oprah Winfrey as a guest on Oprah’s Next Chapter.  The interview will air August 26.  And Phelps’ friendly rival and former teammate, Ryan Lochte, has admitted to considering stints on Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor, however nothing has been confirmed.

While it should be easy for athletes to transfer gold medals into dollars, it’s not, especially for female athletes. Traditionally, the opportunities afforded female athletes pale in comparison to their male counterparts, and the pickings are even slimmer for niche competitors.  Yet, with The Haney Project six months away and the premiere of Richards-Ross’ show unknown, I wonder if the American audience will still care about either of these athletes when their shows eventually hit the air.

What do you think?  Are you looking forward to watching any of these gold medalists on TV?

LeBron’s Decision Finally Pays Off…Twitter Reacts!

June 22, 2012 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

It’s no secret that I’m a not a Miami Heat fan.   You have Pat the Rat’s shady ass to thank for that.  And yet despite my feelings, I’m not entirely upset or disgusted by the Heat’s win.  I share in the enjoyment of Juwan Howard finally getting a ring.   The Fab 5 fanatic in me couldn’t be happier for him.  I’m also a D. Wade fan so seeing him celebrate winning his second championship was cool too.  And this may even come as a surprise…I’m not even NOT happy for LeBron! See what I did there?  No but seriously, that dude balled all season long.  He was focused and determined.  It was his time and he earned it.  Congrats to him.  Now Eddy Curry is a completely different story.  In the past three years, he played a total of 24 games and somehow the world has rewarded him with a championship ring. This can’t be life…smh.

Since I have nothing else positive to say about what transpired last night, let’s read congratulatory tweets from people that do.

From the man who “personally guaranteed” the Cleveland Cavs would win a chip before LeBron…
