Athletes tweet reactions to ESPN’s ‘Broke’

October 3, 2012 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

Photo via ESPN

After last night’s premiere of Broke, I took to twitter to see what the general consensus was among athletes.  Did they feel it accurately portrayed some of the challenges they face in becoming a millionaire overnight?  Did they identify with the excessive lifestyle Andre Rison, Keith McCants, and Leon Searcy lived? Will it impact how they spend their money going forward? Or, did some continue to think, “that’ll never be me?”

Well, the truth is…it was mixed. Here are some of the best twitter reactions during and after Broke.

Some athletes believed the doc was a cautionary tale and encouraged current and aspiring professional athletes to tune in:

Yesterday I wrote I was disappointed in the doc and was interested to see how it evolved in the past few months, if at all.  And some of ASE’s readers reached out to ask if my opinion changed.  While they beefed up the list of experts to provide more context for viewers, overall, I still believe it was too surface and a huge disappointment.  My reasons for feeling this way are overwhelmingly long, but if you reached out privately, I’d be happy to discuss.  As I mentioned, I’ve done a ton of research on this topic, including interviews with athletes and sports professionals, and I know it doesn’t just start and end with athletes overspending.  That’s oversimplifying a very complex issue.

Also, I don’t believe athletes flippantly detailing their outrageous spending habits does anything to change this culture among athletes.  If Billy Corben thought using brash personalities would ignite dialogue about a taboo topic, then perhaps the documentary was a success.  But the manner in which the content was disseminated won’t do much to decrease the rate at which athletes mismanage their money and ultimately go broke.

And quite frankly, I’m surprised by athlete reactions.  I don’t think their community was portrayed in a positive way at all.  I’ve always felt the media reports these stories at nauseum not to inform the general public about the pitfalls athletes encounter, but to exploit them.  Broke was no exception.

I could go on and on, but I won’t. It’s on record that Broke was probably my least favorite of the 30 for 30 series so far.  But I’ll definitely be tuning in for next week’s 9.79* doc about track and field at the 1988 Seoul Games.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the doc. Sound off in the comments below.

LeBron’s Decision Finally Pays Off…Twitter Reacts!

June 22, 2012 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

It’s no secret that I’m a not a Miami Heat fan.   You have Pat the Rat’s shady ass to thank for that.  And yet despite my feelings, I’m not entirely upset or disgusted by the Heat’s win.  I share in the enjoyment of Juwan Howard finally getting a ring.   The Fab 5 fanatic in me couldn’t be happier for him.  I’m also a D. Wade fan so seeing him celebrate winning his second championship was cool too.  And this may even come as a surprise…I’m not even NOT happy for LeBron! See what I did there?  No but seriously, that dude balled all season long.  He was focused and determined.  It was his time and he earned it.  Congrats to him.  Now Eddy Curry is a completely different story.  In the past three years, he played a total of 24 games and somehow the world has rewarded him with a championship ring. This can’t be life…smh.

Since I have nothing else positive to say about what transpired last night, let’s read congratulatory tweets from people that do.

OKC advances to the NBA Finals; Athletes tweet reactions!

June 7, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Image via AP

It was all good just a week ago…for the San Antonio Spurs.  Last week, Tim Duncan was six wins away from winning his fifth NBA championship.  Now he and the rest of the Spurs have gone finishing.

What a turn of events for the Oklahoma City Thunder.  They fought back from being down two games, and 18 points in last night’s game to advance to the NBA Finals.  Forget the Big 3 of the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden are the three to beat.  Combined, they scored 75 of the Thunder’s 108 points.

Even if you aren’t a Thunder fan, it’s hard not to root for this team.  They’re young, humble, fun to watch, and just good as hell!  As Coach Pop said during last night’s post game presser, OKC is the first Western Conference team not named the Spurs, Lakers, or Mavs to reach the NBA Finals in 14 years.  And they had to defeat each of those teams to get there.  There’s a finally a new sheriff in town. Recognize.

I’m definitely looking forward to OKC battling against the Boston Celtics or Miami Heat, two teams that I despise, and eventually hoisting that Larry O’Brien trophy.  With home court advantage on their side, and the benefit of having the livest home crowd of any team in the league, the Thunder will remain unbeatable at home.  The 2012 NBA Championship belongs to OKC.  They are just four wins away from Durant hanging his first champion banner in Chesapeake Energy Arena.

After the final buzzer sounded, athletes and sports folks hit up twitter to show love for the Thunder. Here’s a snapshot of what was said:

Jalen Rose may have had the Tweet of the Night with this throwback R&B reference:

VIDEO: Josh Hamilton Has Historic Night, Hits 4 HRs

May 9, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Patrick Smith/Reuters

If there was any worry that Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers, would be off to a slow start after his off season relapse, cast your worries aside.  This season, he’s been one of MLB’s top stories and is having his best season to-date.  He currently leads the majors in three categories: HRs (14), RBI (36), and BA (.406).  This gaudy statline, just one month into the season, was enough for Hamilton to receive American League Player of the Month honors for April.  As a result of his off the charts performance, the Rangers stand atop the standings with the league’s best record at 20-10.

And the hits keep coming, literally.  Last night against the Baltimore Orioles, Hamilton went 5-for-5 with four 2-run homers.  No matter who the Orioles placed on the mound, Hamilton responded with a hit.  Hamilton’s record night made him the 16th member of the four home runs in one game club.  Carlos Delgado last did it in 2003.

After the game, Delgado took to twitter and welcomed Hamilton to the club while also giving a nod to Shawn Green, the former LA Dodgers right fielder who also shares this honor:

#Rangers Mr. Josh Hamilton very nice game. Welcome to the club!!!!!!! @shawngreen15

Yes, MVP talk is premature, but with Hamilton only getting hotter, it’s hard to imagine he won’t be a contender come September.

Stoudemire’s bloody act will cost Woodson his job; Tweets apology

May 1, 2012 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

“You big dummy!” – Fred Sanford

That’s what everyone in the world is thinking after Amar’e Stoudemire stupidly punched glass and cut his left hand after last night’s 104-94 loss to the Miami Heat.

After the game, Stoudemire refused to speak with the media, but then hit up twitter and had this to say to his followers and fans:

I am so mad at myself right now, I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions, headed home for a new start

@Amareisreal
Amar’e Stoudemire

Sorry guys?  This to shall pass?

Whateva man.

Stoudemire’s behavior is so irreparable, there’s nothing he could ever say to absolve him of his selfish behavior.  I get it, what’s done is done, but he just seems so passive about the whole situation.  The people suffering most from Stoudemire’s sudden rush and poorly timed act of aggression are his teammates and Knicks fans.

Could yesterday’s emotional rage be fueled by more than the loss?  Sure.  There’s a possibility he’s still mourning his brother’s death.  Maybe returning to Florida, where his brother died in car accident back in February, allowed old memories to emerge.  Perhaps the frustration he demonstrated was a result of losing both the game and his brother.  And if that’s the case, I understand that mourning the loss of a loved one and trying to function on the job is a tough balancing act.  Ask Lamar Odom.  The smallest thing can cause a slew of unresolved emotions to surface.

HOWEVER(!!!), when your hands are your moneymaker, you can’t go around punching glass.  It simply cannot happen.  I don’t care what you’re experiencing in life, especially when you’re supposed to be an integral part of the team.  With Amar’e, the Knicks lacked the depth and talent to take on the Heat.  Having lost its best perimeter defender in Iman Shumpert for 6-8 months, and making do with an old, overweight, and hurt Baron Davis at point guard, an injury ridden Jared Jeffries, and an unproductive trio of players in Landry Fields, Toney Douglas, and Mike Bibby, the Knicks were already shorthanded.  And without him, they definitely don’t stand a chance.

As a result of last night’s loss, the Knicks tied the league record for most consecutive playoff losses at 12.  They’re one loss away from setting a new record, and two losses away from being swept out of the first round…for the second year in a row.  And might I add that Amar’e has taken himself out of the playoffs…for the second year in a row.

Any hope that the Knicks and its fans have of avoiding the same fate as last season falls on Carmelo Anthony.  Though some argue the team is better off without Stoudemire’s suspect rebounding, defending, and free throw attempts, Melo doesn’t have a good enough supporting cast to help him take on the Heat.  With all of the injuries, the Knicks’ biggest advantage, the bench, has become a non-factor.  Steve Novak is ineffective because of the Heat’s superb defense and JR Smith’s erratic shooting has been a detriment to the team.  When If the Knicks are swept again, Mike Woodson will be shown the door.  Not even one week ago, I gave Woodson a ringing endorsement.  But based on how the playoffs have unfolded, there’s no way he returns if the Knicks don’t stage some type of epic comeback.  And while Glen Grunwald is hard at work trying to replace Woodson, he should also devise a masterful plan to ship Amar’e, the $100 million man, out of New York.  Between his poor performance on the court, and dumb decisions off — cornrows and punching glass…he’s gotta go, too.

UPDATE! Artest Tweets Ignorance to Harden Elbow

April 23, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Reuters/Lucy Nicholson

By now, we’ve all seen the video of Ron Artest (his mama named him Artest, I’ma call him Artest) throwing a bow to James Harden’s head, but let’s watch again.

Yep, it’s still very, very, bad.  So bad that Artest even admitted it via twitter a few hours after the game.

Hope James Hardin is ok…I remember when I hit by Marc Gasol the same way.. I was spitting up blood and a headache during the game…

But he also maintains that his actions were unintentional, and a case of wrong place, wrong time.  Kinda.

Dear Ron Ron, we don’t believe you, you need more people!

After reviewing the video multiple times, there’s absolutely no chance in hell that anyone is buying Artest’s claim that the vicious elbow that connected with Harden’s head was unintentional.  And if that’s his defense in the Court of Stern with Judge Stu Jackson presiding, dude is in serious trouble.

As a repeat offender who’s done a solid job of rehabbing his image since returning to the league following the Malice in the Palace incident, his past continues to precede him.  No matter how much peace he purports to spread among the world, actions speak louder than any name change ever could.  Yesterday’s actions reaffirmed the perception that Artest’s therapist’s work is not yet done.  And unfortunately for him, his reputation will surely play a factor in the severity of his pending punishment.

However, I don’t know what the precedent is for multiple game suspensions when there’s only one regular season game remaining on the calendar.  But there’s absolutely no doubt that Artest will be suspended 1, 2, 5 or more games.  After all, Harden was diagnosed with a concussion.  But what remains to be seen is if the suspension will continue through the playoffs or if Jackson will spare Artest and the Lakers by carrying over the games to next year’s regular season.

With the NBA, anything is possible.  For example, remember when first-time offender Kevin Love stomped out Luis Scola?  Well, that warranted a two-game ban.  But after clotheslining JJ Barea during last year’s playoffs, Andrew Bynum, who’s also developed quite a reputation for flagrant plays, received a significantly harsher suspension of five games, though it was later reduced to four.  Oh, and let’s not forget Artest also took a shot at Barea last year.  He was subsequently tossed from the game.

But based on the seemingly arbitrary punishments, there’s no telling what type of punishment awaits Artest.  The NBA likes to rewrite the rules as they go.  However, Ron’s brother, Daniel, may have given us some insight.  Yesterday he tweeted that Ron believes he could be suspended the entire first round of the playoffs.  If that’s so, the timing of Artest’s reckless behavior couldn’t be worse.  He’s currently playing his best basketball of the season. In April, Artest is averaging 14.2 ppg, 3.0 apg, and 4.7 rpg. If he’s forced to miss the whole first round, it appears the Lakers’ road to No. 18 just got a whole lot more difficult.  And as much as not having Artest hurts the Lakers, not having Harden, the likely Sixth Man of the Year, hurts the Thunder even more as his presence is extremely critical to the overall success of that team.

It’s still unknown how many games Harden will be forced to miss because of the concussion.  And for this, I think Artest should have to miss at least a couple games more than Harden, assuming Harden’s concussion forces him to miss any games at all.

UPDATE:

As suspected, the NBA went big with Artest’s suspension.  Today they announced he is suspended for the next seven games without pay, making his pockets approximately $350,000 lighter.  He will miss the final regular season game against the Sacramento Kings, and up to six playoff games.  Should the Lakers be eliminated in less than six games, the suspension will resume at the start of the 2012-2012 regular season.

Does Vilma’s twitter spat with SI’s Peter King suggest denial?

April 4, 2012 by Shana Renee 4 Comments

If you’re keeping track of the New Orleans Saints’ moves since Bountygate, then you’ll know yesterday they signed their third linebacker this offseason: Curtis Lofton, Chris Chamberlain, and David Hawthorne.  The Saints heavying up on LBs largely has to do with the team anticipating lengthy player suspensions from Roger Goodell. While the report suggested 22 of 27 defensive players were involved, only one player, middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, was explicitly named for having an active role in the bounty scandal.  He “allegedly” offered players $10,000 to take out Brett Favre during the 2010 NFL Championship game.

With it looking like Vilma will eventually be suspended and possibly face criminal charges too, the Saints are doing what’s necessary to remain competitive on the field.

Yesterday, Sports Illustrated’s Peter King and Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma exchanged a few twitter pleasantries after the Saints recent signing of Hawthorne.

King set it off with the following tweet:

Vilma, feeling some type of way, responded with the following:

“@SI_PeterKing: Curtis Lofton, Chris Chamberlain, David Hawthorne. Get the message, Jonathan Vilma?”that u know how to type peoples names??

King reminded Vilma that the NFL investigation was the true source of his misdirected anger:

Vilma didn’t buy it and took more shots at King and the entire blogosphere:

@SI_PeterKing the nfl investigation has NOTHING to do with ur tweet. You’ve now turned into a blogger who takes shots at players on twitter

OK, here’s the deal.  I’m a Vilma fan.  Have been since he played with the Jets, but dude is in serious denial.  Did King instigate the situation by baiting him via twitter? Yes.  Was that out of line for a seasoned and respected journalist like King? Possibly.  King could’ve merely reported that the Saints signed another linebacker and implied they’re continuing to get their house in order in anticipation of falling chips, without taking shots at Vilma.

HOWEVER, Vilma getting defensive and questioning King’s journalistic integrity is a complete deflection of what’s really going on.  Vilma must be real with himself and accept that it’s only a matter of time before he’s officially done with the Saints, and possibly the NFL forever.  King’s tweet only reinforced the message the Saints have been sending since initially signing Curtis Lofton in March.  Instead of worrying about King further muddying up his name, he should get off twitter and remain out of the spotlight.  Fortunately for him, he’s lawyered up courtesy of the NFLPA, because the possibility of criminal charges being brought against him is serious as hell.  But he and his lawyer need to meet asap, so Vilma can be advised on proper conduct. Call me crazy, but I have a feeling that inciting twitter wars with someone as revered as Peter King doesn’t fit the bill.

Vilma needs to take this more seriously.  He, “allegedly” no stranger to bounties, escaped the University of Miami accusations unscathed.  But this is the NFL  and Goodell has an axe to grind; and Vilma will be made an example.  I see it.  You see it.  But does Vilma see it?

(Video) Lionel Messi’s Five Goals Smash Bayer

March 8, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Lionel Messi is that dude.  He did major work against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round of 16 series.  His five goals, yes FIVE, led Barcelona to a 7-1 win and landed them a spot in the quarterfinals.  Messi’s latest accomplishment makes him the first player to ever score five goals in one Champions League match, which comes just two weeks after he scored four goals against Valencia.  With 49 goals total, Messi is currently tied for fourth on the all-time European Cup scoring list.  If he keeps scoring at this rate, the 24-year-old will claim that No. 1 spot in no time.  Spain’s Raul is ranked first with 71 goals.

After the match, Wayne Rooney took to twitter and praised the 5’6 futboler.

Pretty much.  He’s won multiple championships at the club and national levels.  Plus, every individual award ever created.  And the most unbelievable part of it all?  He’s only 24.  There’s time for many more chapters to be written.  Watch the latest entry, video of all five goals in yesterday’s Champions League match against Bayer.

Video: CL Highlights: Barcelona/Leverkusen

Yes, that just happened.

Suh and Harrison weigh in on ‘Bountygate’

March 5, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Ron Chenoy/US PRESSWIRE

Of course ‘Bountygate’ wouldn’t be a complete until the NFL’s dirtiest player, Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle for the Lions, and always reckless James Harrison, Pittsburgh Steelers, shared their stance on the situation.  How dare there be a discussion about the redeeming quality, or lack there of, related to NFL bounties without hearing from the NFL’s resident authorities on dirty hits?  Luckily for us, Suh attended a NASCAR race in Charlotte this weekend and talked with a reporter from the Charlotte Observer about this very issue.  Here’s what he shared,

It’s unfortunate to hear these things come out.  Me personally, I don’t take part in those things and knowing my teammates and knowing my coaches, we wouldn’t allow that.  I understand it’s a tough situation the commissioner has to deal with. As he has in the past, he’s going to deal with it with a stiff hand. Hopefully, people can learn from the mistakes and make an example out of it.  We always have a band as a team and as a unit, especially as a defensive line, we want to be the first guys to get to the quarterback.  But for me personally and for my teammates, we don’t want to put anybody out. I would never want anybody to target me to take me out so why would I do it to somebody else?

It appears Suh’s throwing stones while perched atop that huge glass house of his.  To read that he mentioned the importance of learning from your mistakes and how he personally would never want anybody to target him so why would he do it someone else, is somewhat laughable.  Suh is a dude who’s been disciplined for misconduct five times in his short two-year career.  He’s been fined a total of $42,500, and suspended two games without pay, which resulted in an additional loss of $142K.  He has, without question, overstepped that blurred line between playing aggressively and being downright dirty.  Witnessing Suh repeatedly pound Evan Dietrich-Smith’s head into the ground and subsequently stomp his arm, all after the play was whistled dead, was deplorable.

As for James Harrison’s opinion?  Never one to hold back, he sounded off via twitter and had this to say:

I’ll just say this, if that was me I would have been kicked out of the NFL!!!

We’ll see how concerned the NFL is about player safety when they decide what the punishment for the saints is….. http://t.co/QBqBxrG6

Harrison implying that the Saints may get a slap on the wrist shows he remains as clueless as ever.

Since succeeding Paul Tagliabue as commissioner, one of Roger Goodell’s main agendas has been cleaning up the game and improving player safety.  And whether it’s premeditated, intentional, or not, Goodell’s been very clear that the boundaries the league have in place are to protect players.  As such, players, coaches, and personnel will suffer major consequences for not adhering to the rules set.  Although Goodell faced his fair share of criticism for “softening the sport” in the process, he unapologetically moved forward with instituting sweeping changes.  Despite the backlash, Goodell’s player safety movement seemed on track notwithstanding a few bad apples spoiling the bunch, like Harrison and Suh.  Both were hit hard in the pocket as a result of crossing the line this season, but now that details about Gregg Williams allegedly polluting the system wherever he went have emerged, Suh is correct about Goodell ruling with a stiff hand.  And it’s widely expected that this may be his harshest ruling to date.  The Patriots were fined and docked a first-round draft pick for Spygate.  Also, Goodell upheld multiple game suspensions handed down by the NCAA to Terrell Pryor and Jim Tressell, which means Bountygate’s cast of characters will also suffer greatly for their participation.

If Suh and Harrison thought Goodell showed no mercy on them before, it’s safe to assume they haven’t seen the worst of it.

Athletes Tweet Super Bowl Reactions!

February 6, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Ron Antonelli/New York Daily News

It’s official, the New York Giants are winners of Super Bowl XLVI. MVP Eli Manning continued his stellar fourth quarter play and put together an exciting comeback to finish off the New England Patriots, 21-17.

Although I didn’t plan on watching the game, as a die-hard NFL fan and true New Yorker, honestly there was no way I could sit this one out. And I’m happy that Big Blue made my decision worth it. Had it gone the other way, I’d be sick. Instead, I’m at peace knowing New York snatched another win away from Boston. Though my Jets are currently in a state of turmoil, I now consider the season a success because a) Boston lost and b) New York won.

At the start of the season, Rex Ryan challenged the NFL to beat the Patriots. The Giants answered the call and swept the Pats in both meetings; something the Jets were unable to accomplish. I can guarantee this isn’t the outcome Ryan envisioned, but considering the other scenario, this is good enough for me. Thank you New York Giants.

As you can imagine, twitter was buzzing throughout the night. Let’s see what some of the new champs and their fellow athletes had to say about the game and the exciting win!
