Before Tip-Off: New York Knicks @ Boston Celtics

March 26, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

WHO:

Knicks (42-26) @ Celtics (36-33)

WHEN:

7PM/ET on TNT

W2W4:

Tonight, the Knicks are in Beantown facing a Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo-less Celtics team.  Meanwhile, the Knicks still have their own injury woes to contend with.  Word is, Tyson Chandler will likely miss tonight’s game despite participating in the team’s shootaround this morning.  Yet, regardless of each team’s short-handedness, both need this win badly.  The Celtics are on a four game skid, while the Knicks are looking to extend their win streak to five.  Tonight’s game is particularly important for the Knicks because it kicks off another tough stretch.  Seven of their next eight games are against playoff contenders.  Over the next couple of weeks, the Knicks will face Boston twice, Miami, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Memphis.

Additionally, the Brooklyn Nets continue to nip at the heels of the Knicks and are just two games back.  To gain further separation from the Nets, the Knicks must wrack up as many wins as possible.  With Carmelo Anthony looking like his old self again and Kenyon Martin proving he’s more than an adequate replacement for Tyson Chandler, the Knicks have been impressive of late.  In the Knicks’ four-game winning streak, Martin has averaged 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds and has hit 75 percent of his shots.  And of course, Martin’s defensive energy has positively infected the team.  According to ESPN.com, “When Martin is on the floor, the Knicks are giving up 99.5 points per 100 possessions, which would rank fifth in the NBA. When he’s off the floor, they’re giving up 103.3, which would put them 17th.”  This is the kind of habit building behavior the Knicks must exhibit as the playoffs approach.

Proven by the tight standings, the Eastern Conference playoff seedings are still up for grabs.  With 14 games remaining on the Knicks calendar, only 6.5 games separate them from the No. 7 seed Celtics.

Just because two of the Celtics “Big 3″ are injured, the Knicks cannot expect to steamroll the Celtics.  Doc Rivers remains one of the best coaches in the league, and Paul Pierce has enough venom to destroy the Knicks.  In his past 13 games against the Knicks, Pierce is averaging 27.8 points per game on 52.9 percent shooting. And he’s killed us beyond the arc, shooting 49 percent. Iman Shumpert’s perimeter defense will be key in slowing Pierce and the Celtics down, and allowing the Knicks to get solid open looks on the offensive end.

PREDICTION:

Per usual, it’ll feel like a playoff game, but when the final buzzer sounds, the Knicks will have done enough to keep their streak alive.  Knicks win.

NEXT GAME:

VIDEO: LeBron James Posterizes Jason Terry

March 18, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Oh word, Jason Terry, what was that about you being unimpressed by the Heat’s streak and anything they do?

I knew the Heat would have something to say about that, and after seeing this dunk, I couldn’t think of a more emphatic response by the Heat than to have Dwyane Wade heist the ball from Terry, dish it off to Mario Chalmers, who dished it off to Norris Cole, who tossed it up and perfectly set up LeBron James’s posterization of Terry.

Nasty.

NY Knicks Fans, look on the bright side, at least…

January 17, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Jim McIsaac

At the start of the NBA season and following the Tyson Chandler move, experts predicted the New York Knicks had improved so much that they’d become the fourth best team in the Eastern Conference.  The only teams expected to best them were the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, and Boston Celtics.  But now, almost one month into the season, we see that the Knicks’ season has gotten off to a bumpy start and they are currently clinging to eighth place.  However, since misery indeed loves company, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention they aren’t the only team who hasn’t lived up to lofty expectations.

Knicks fans, let’s commiserate on this…

No. 1

The Boston Celtics are currently worse off than the Knicks.  For real, their 4-8 record proves it.  And if you’ve watched them play at all this season, especially during the current span of their five-game losing streak, you can admit and take pleasure in witnessing the mortality of the Big 3 as they finally transition from “aging” to “aged”.   Any NYer or Knicks fan should find joy in celebrating the steady downfall of a Boston franchise, especially after they unapologetically and emphatically ruined our highly anticipated return to the playoffs last season.

No. 2

The Miami Heat have also failed to get in a groove this season.  After starting on a high note and running teams out the building, the Heat have hit a rough patch.  As we know, Dwyane Wade is injury prone so him being sidelined early in the season isn’t shocking.  Yet, while D. Wade sits out, the untimeliness of LeBron James’s clutchless gene flare up has prevented the team from finishing strong.  James’s lack of killer instinct and D. Wade’s nagging injuries have resulted in the Heatles losing three in a row and an unimpressive 8-4 start.  While that’s not a terrible record, by any means, the expectations for the Heat are so off the charts that anytime they take an L, an alarm sounds.  As long as the Miami Heat continue to struggle, it makes the Knicks pill slightly easier to swallow.

No. 3

Knicks fans, let’s also be thankful that the team didn’t hire Mark Jackson.  Don’t forget, many of you were petitioning for James Dolan to bring back the New York native and Knicks alum as the team’s new head coach.  For the record, I wasn’t aboard that sinking ship.  But after finally getting the opportunity he’s been waiting for, Jackson’s off to an eh start.  Despite beating the Knicks, Bulls, and Heat, the Golden State Warriors are 4-8, and haven’t given me any reason to think he would’ve been the right man for the job.

No. 4

At least YOU have the NY Giants, right?  I say YOU because I’m a Jets fan and am still trying to digest the possibility of a New England Patriots/NY Giants rematch.  My worst nightmare revisited.  But if you ride for Big Blue, then you have them to distract you from the Knicks for at least another week. But if you’re a Jets/Knicks/Yankees hybrid like me, let’s celebrate knowing spring training is only six weeks away.  And finally, to any of Jets/Knicks/Mets fans out there, sorry homey.  It’s going to be a long winter and spring.  *pours out liquor*

No. 5

After a scandalous off season, Jim Boeheim has coached Syracuse University to a 20-0 record.  They are ranked No. 1 in college basketball and are breaking all kinds of SU records.  Big East fans, let’s enjoy it while it lasts because before we know it, we’ll be saying so long to the Orange.

Melo Leads Knicks Over Celtics in Knicksmas Thriller!

December 26, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via NYPost.com

After the NY Jets shat the bed against the NY Giants on Christmas Eve, I put every ounce of hope in my NY Knicks and trusted they had what it took to avenge their dreadfully embarrassing outing against the Boston Celtics in last season’s playoffs.  I didn’t only want the Knicks to get the W against their rivals because it would send an early message to the league.  But, I desperately NEEDED the Knicks to win in order to reunite a household that was left divided after the Giants took it to my Jets.

My family is made up of sore losers and we have an unwritten family law that states, regardless of the final score between the Jets and Giants, if we’re all committed to having a Christmas full of good cheer, which we were, neither party would discuss the events that took place on Christmas Eve.  With the common interest of ending the day with a Knicks win, we proceeded to gather around the TV and silently, yet collectively, pray the basketball gods would gift our family of Knicks fans with something the Knicks were unable to do in eight attempts last season, beat the Celtics.

You know what happened next.  The Knicks, starring Carmelo Anthony (37 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists), indeed beat the Celtics 106-104.  The Knicks were dominant in the first half, on both ends of the court.  Melo and Amar’e Stoudemire, who quietly added 21 points, performed as expected, but the two standouts were Tyson Chandler (4 points, 3 rebounds, 6 blocks) and rookie Iman Shumpert (11 points,  4 rebounds, 1 assist).

For the first time, we were able to see what the much talked about, new and improved Knicks frontcourt was truly made of in a regular season game.  Combined, they scored 65 of 106 points.  And it was clear, adding Chandler to the mix definitely gave the Knicks a familiar look of intimidation that’s been absent since the days of Patrick Ewing.  Seriously, when’s the last time a Knicks player had six blocks in a game?

I’ll wait.

And although Chandler doesn’t contribute much offensively, and I admit, he has to become more aggressive on the boards, his enthusiasm and leadership is invaluable.  Not only is he a hype man, but he’s a hype man that his teammates respect.

As for the rookie, Shumpert proved early on that he may be young but he’s ready.

Since the first preseason game, he became a fan favorite as it was immediately obvious that he’s something kind of special.  Despite shooting 3-13 against the Celtics, his fearless and aggressive style of play is exactly what Knicks fans crave.  That’s why watching him go down in pain in the third quarter had me panic stricken as I feared that his promising rookie season may not only be in jeopardy, but most importantly, that we might be stuck with Toney Douglas running the point for the remainder of the season if Shump’s injury was serious.  It’s not.

But what was painful, was the not so subtle reminder that the more things change, the more things stay the same.

In true Knicks fashion, they blew their lead.  With Melo sitting out the majority of the third quarter because of foul trouble, things fell apart.  The Celtics, mainly Rajon Rondo (31 points and 13 assists) and Ray Allen (20 points) picked up right where they left off following last year’s playoffs.  They sucked the life out of the Knicks as they each dropped 10 points in the third.  Their 20 points combined helped the Cs fight back from being down by 11 to up by 10.

Meanwhile, with Melo out of the game, Douglas assumed the role as the No. 1 scoring option as he shot 2-7.  Douglas finished the day 8-19, and had the most shot attempts on the team.  Let me say that again.

Toney Douglas led the team in shot attempts!

In what world is that ever the game plan? Could it be that Mike D’antoni isn’t preaching the same philosophy as the rest of Knicks Knation, which is for Douglas to bring up the ball and immediately dish it to Melo, who’s undoubtedly the best facilitator on the team.  And if Melo isn’t on the floor, look for the open man but whatever Douglas does, for goodness sakes do not chuck up a three!

Although I will admit, considering the Knicks won the game, and Douglas did hit a couple of much needed timely threes, I could be going a little hard on him.  However, my main point is that Douglas is not that dude and shouldn’t play as if he is.  Instead, he should be comfortable playing his position as a filler until Baron Davis and Shump are available to replace Douglas and Landry Fields as starters at the 1-and-2 positions.

Yet, once Melo returned in the fourth, it was a game changer…game over.  The offense began flowing again, and Melo dropped 17 points, which matched the complete point total of the Celtics.  He drained a couple of three pointers, shot 7-8 from the foul line and carried the Knicks to a 1-0 record against the Celtics for the first time since 2003.

That’s progress.

No, it wasn’t a pretty win. And no they’re not quite the Beasts of the East.  And yes they played a Paul Pierce-less Celtics team, but so what.  When Amar’e Stoudemire went down in the playoffs last season and the Knicks were swept, no one caveated the Knicks’ poor performance by saying oh, but Stoudemire was hurt.

Without a doubt, the Knicks still have lots of work to do, but once they resolve their point guard issues and Mike Woodson has more time to assert his defensive philosophy upon the team, the Knicks will be tough to beat.

After the final buzzer sounded and my fam and I breathed a sigh of relief, we hi-fived, talked trash, and watched the Miami Heat take it to the defending NBA Champs.  Normalcy was restored and a Merry Knicksmas was had by all.

Game On! New NBA TV Ads Hype Christmas Day Tip-Off!

December 8, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

With the official countdown to the NBA season underway, it appears NBA marketing campaigns are plenty. Over the past week, many ads have hit the small screen. Here’s a (small) roundup of the ones that matter.

First up is ESPN. Yesterday, they debuted a :30 spot simply called, NBA on ESPN Christmas Day- The NBA is Back. Since the NBA’s largest broadcast partner was in limbo awaiting an end to the lockout, just like rest of us, they relied on footage to set the stage for the marquee matchups on Christmas Day. The effective ad pans around a mosaic of five teams: Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat. We see each team’s superstar(s) suffering defeat in the 2011 NBA playoffs. Then we see Dirk Nowitzki of the the sixth and final team, the Dallas Mavericks, celebrating his first NBA championship. The spot closes with the message: UNWRAP BIG GAMES CHRISTMAS DAY.

ESPN’s competitor, TNT, took a two-fold approach. During the offseason, Inside the NBA announced they’d have a BIG addition to their often imitated never duplicated studio show. Shaquille O’Neal would be joining Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson in the studio this season. TNT smartly utilized the showman to hype the start of the long awaited season. During the :30 spot, we see Shaq dancing and lip synching, lead and backup, to the soulful tune, “Get Ready” by The Temptations. The spot closes with the tagline, ” Get Ready, BIG things are coming from the NBA, as a nod to the start of the season as well as Shaq’s arrival. Nicely done.

While I enjoyed both of those spots, my favorite, without question is the NY Knicks :30 promo, Let’s Get It On. I admit, I’m a lot biased, but the marketer in me gives the Knicks top billing because it was most successful at making me feel something. Again, I realize I’m biased. Having said that, the closeup shot of the orange and blue, intense stares, chest bumps, and amplified sounds of thunder claps, bleacher stomps and a raucous MSG arena set to the groovin’ tune of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” made me remember what I’ve missed and am most looking forward to on Christmas Day. While Gaye’s invitation to “get it on” usually leads to the bedroom, if you’re lucky, it successfully serves as a tease as Knicks fans eagerly await a healthy STAT, Melo, Billups, Tyson Chandler and team to avenge their swift and disappointing exit from the playoffs against the Boston Celtics. “Let’s get it on” is also the perfect phrase to setup a bout between these two Eastern Conference heavyweights. While Marvin Gaye works surprisingly well in this context, I hope the Knicks return with more grit and bark of the DMX and Swizz Beats version of Let’s Get it On.

Is the Jam Packed NBA Schedule a Blessing or a Curse?

December 7, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Jeff Gross/Getty Images North America

The NBA finally released the official 2011-2012 schedule and it ain’t nothin’ nice.

It’s no secret that in order for teams to squeeze 66-games in between Christmas and April 26, sacrifices on behalf of the players are required. But after reviewing what’s to come, there’s no doubt the wratched amount of basketball that’s about to ensue due to the absurd number of back-to-back games, 529, and back-to-back-to-back games, 42, will most definitely test the most loyal NBA fan’s tolerance. While it may seem that one team has it worse than another, it’s quite the contrary. The wicked schedule creators spared no expense piling it on. They were equally merciless. Every team’s mental and physical stamina will be pushed to the limit throughout the entire season. While having an NBA game to watch every day of the season seems good in theory, it’s most definitely a blessing and a curse. Once you factor in injuries and fatigue, both the players and fans suffer. Will NBA fans have the appetite to stomach such bland basketball, especially down the stretch? Or, will the media, fans, and players deem this much basketball, no matter the quality, a much welcomed necessary evil considering the alternative? All will be revealed in time, but for now, here’s what we have to look forward to:

  • The five Christmas Day games are: NYK vs BOS, MIA vs DAL, CHI vs LAL, ORL vs OKC, LAC vs GSW
  • The Lakers play on Christmas, New Years Eve, and New Years Day. They also start the season with their only back-to-back-back game of the season.
  • All-Star Weekend will take place Feb. 24-26 at Amway Center in Orlando, FL

New York Knicks

- The Knicks play 21 back-to-backs games.

- They play four-games-in-five-nights on five occasions & three-games-in-three-nights on one occasion.

- They also have a tough April as they face the Bulls twice and Celtics and Miami once.

- However, Melo and STAT won’t be returning to Denver or Phoenix this season.

- Ouch. Something tells me this intense schedule won’t be kind to STAT’s surgically repaired knees and back and everything else. That goes for Billups and Melo, too.

- If the Knicks are going to pull off a miracle and somehow land CP3, I hope it happens sooner than later. We absolutely cannot, under any circumstances, afford another mid-season shakeup. If it’s gonna happen, get ‘er done. Now.

LA Lakers

- I already mentioned the Lakers have a brutal schedule early on, including 17 back-to-backs. Another thing to note is that Andrew Bynum is suspended the first five games of the season for inflicting bitchassness upon JJ Barea in last year’s playoffs. So there’s that.

- Also, the Lakers have 29 nationally televised games. The most of any other team. But, without much time to adjust to Mike Brown’s new system, the jury is still out on what type of Lakers team we’ll have this season, not to mention the disruption that will be caused should the rumored reports of Dwight Howard and/or Chris Paul to the Lakers come true.

Dallas Mavericks

- The defending champs have 20 back-to-backs.

- They play the Thunder and Lakers four times each, Heat and Celtics twice.

- They open the season at home against the Miami Heat on Christmas Day. The team will also hang its championship banner at this time. However, the ring ceremony will take place at a later date. Mark Cuban wanted to allow the vets, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, and Jason Terry an opportunity to contribute to the design of the rings. But considering Cuban was not allowed to contact his players during the lockout, they had to put things on hold. That’s a very generous move of Cuban, but the hater in me wishes the Heat could’ve been there to witness it all.

Miami Heat

- The Heat have 18 back-to-backs.

- They will play eight games in 11 nights during one April stretch, as in right before the playoffs. Damn.

Orlando Magic

- The Magic have 20 back-to-backs.

- For everyone’s sake, let’s hope Dwight Howard isn’t traded this season. Otherwise, we’ll have to suffer through 24 (or less) nationally televised games. This would be an epic fail of Indianapolis Colts proportions.

Chicago Bulls

- – They have 19 back-to-backs.

- Seven of their first nine games are on the road.

- They square off against the Heat four times starting Jan. 29 and play the Lakers and Thunder once.

Oklahoma City Thunder

- The Thunder will play 18 back-to- back games.

- They will replay the Dallas Mavericks four times.

Other things to note are:

- Blake Griffin is still expected to be must-see TV this season. The NBA generously scheduled 23 national Clippers games.

- Mark Jackson and the Golden State Warriors have 17 games on national TV. You know how much I love Jackson so I’ll definitely be tuning in to see how he does in his coaching debut.

- Last year, Kemba Walker and UCONN were in huge demand. This season, joining the Charlotte Bobcats has reduced him to four national games. And they’re all on NBATV.

- Not even the No. 1 overall draft pick, Kyrie Irving, is a reason to watch the Cleveland Cavs. They play in front of a national audience one time this season, March 24 against Phoenix.

- Interested in seeing Jimmer Fredette? He makes his national TV debut against the Lakers on 12/26 on NBATV. After that, you’ll have eight more chances to catch him.

Suddenly all of those exhibition games don’t seem like such a good idea, uh? After seeing the intensity of the schedule, there’s no doubt players probably wish they would’ve taken advantage of the lockout by resting. Not only did the players ultimately make more concessions than the owners, but making the players work this hard for their money once again proves how powerless the players truly are.

The NBA Lockout is Over! NBA Players Tweet Mixed Reactions!

November 26, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Nothing was better than waking up to the news that NBA players and owners have reached a tentative agreement!  While details are still being revealed, here’s what we know so far.  Yes! We will have games on Christmas Day.  The tripleheader will likely include the NY Knicks vs. Boston Celtics, Miami Heat vs. Dallas Mavericks, and the Chicago Bulls vs. the LA Lakers.  Yes! We will have a 66-game season.  This will require some calendar shuffling, so expect a revised a schedule once the deal is officially sealed.  Yes! We’re only two-weeks removed from the start of training camp and free agency. Both are expected to begin on December 9th with the NBA playoffs and finals being pushed back a week.  Similar to what we saw in the NFL, the NBA will have a short free agency period before the NBA season begins.  It’s gonna be crazy! And, finally, there’s no word on whether we will have a 2012 All-Star Game but I suspect that question will be answered in the upcoming week.

By my excessive use of exclamation points, you can tell I’m excited about the news, but how do the players feel?  Well, I stalked a couple of timelines and while the reactions are mixed, overall, the players are just as hype as the fans!

Let’s start with my NY Knicks and our unofficial mascot, Spike Lee…

Melo says Knicks are capable of playing great defense; will lead that charge

October 17, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Chris Trotman/Getty Images North America

With his ninth NBA season in jeopardy, Carmelo Anthony is quickly adjusting to a new lifestyle.  One complete with exhibition games and promo tours for multiple product launches, but noticeably absent of NBA preseason games.

Carmelo Anthony with MISSION AthleteCare promoting PowerGrip

At a press event with MISSION AthleteCare promoting Power Grip™, an innovative product with Liquid Chalk Technology™that promises to “combat sweaty hands, improve grip for athletes,” Anthony opened up about an experience that took place on a recent October morning.

After making breakfast, he planned to head to the practice facility, but then realized training camp and media day weren’t scheduled, calling the situation “tough” for everyone—owners, players, fans, and jobless arena workers.

With each passing day, the chances of the NBA resuming play become more bleak.  Yet, Melo’s optimism continues to lead him to the gym where he’s working on improving his overall game and conditioning.  Melo said, “The main thing is just to get in the best shape that I can…get my body right. Drop some pounds. Drop some weight.  Feel good about myself.  I’m on top of that.”

But, as we’ve seen with the flurry of season-ending injuries sidelining many NFL athletes, there is but only so much athletes can do to ensure game day readiness without organized team workouts.  Nor are natural talents and abilities sufficient when your ultimate destination is the NBA Finals.

After blowing up its team to make room for Melo and Chauncey Billups, the Knicks struggled to establish team chemistry.  The result?  A swift exit from the first round playoffs courtesy of the defensive-minded Boston Celtics.  A memory that has weighed on Melo the entire offseason.  However, he’s since charged the team’s loss to unpreparedness, due to his late-season trade.

Anthony believes with the luxury of time, the Knicks are capable of redefining itself as a great defensive team; a description that hasn’t been associated with the Knicks since Jeff Van Gundy was on the sidelines.  Anthony said, “We have players on our team that can be great defensive players and I’ll lead that charge.  I’ll take that stance and say that I am the leader of this team and I will lead this team to where we have to go.”

Due to lockout restrictions, Anthony and head coach Mike D’Antoni are prohibited from communicating directly.  But, the need to improve defensively continues to echo throughout New York’s 24/7 sports media cycle, from not only players, but fans and beat writers as well.  Just as players are doing as much as they can to prepare for a season, the loyal community of Knicks fans remain hopeful this singular message gets through to D’Antoni, so he’s ready to step in and effectively address concerns when it’s go time.

If, and when, the lockout is lifted this season, the team’s sense of urgency to get on the same page will be amplified. However, until a resolution presents itself, the Knicks must wait patiently for redemption.

One much anticipated rematch between the Boston Celtics and NY Knicks is scheduled for Christmas Day.  But after David Stern hinted that Christmas Day games are on the brink of cancellation, Melo admitted he was “heartbroken” and asked, “how could you want to miss that?” He continued, “That’s one game that I had marked on my calendar.” But later said, he’d be happy with any games he could get at this point.

While that may be the case, his desperation hasn’t swelled to the point where he’s willing to jet overseas to Asia or Europe.  Instead, Anthony pledged his allegiance to New York joking, “I just got to New York.  I can’t leave y’all already.”

And to further prove his commitment to the Empire State, he vowed to organize an exhibition game for his New York fans…even if it means traveling to New Jersey’s IZOD Center because the Garden is off limits to NBA athletes.

While the complete roster hasn’t been revealed, one player, aside from LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, guaranteed to receive an invitation is the Knicks first round draft pick, Iman Shumpert.  After running with the 6’6 guard in Atlanta, Melo was immediately impressed.  He praised the rookie’s game and said, “I didn’t really know he was that athletic.  I didn’t really know that he could really play the game like that.  I didn’t know how smart he was on the basketball court.  I figured that out as soon as we got out on the court, real fast.”

With so much extra time on his hands, figuring things out real fast has become second nature to the 6’8 forward.  But if Melo had it his way, he’d prefer to stick to what he knows best, and that’s simply playing NBA basketball.

On another note, I also had the chance to ask Anthony what he thought about Syracuse University bolting for the ACC.  His response:

That means I’m gonna have to become an ACC fan.  It’s tough.  When you hear about Syracuse in basketball, the first thing that comes to mind is Big East.  Syracuse is the Big East.  So to hear that they’re going to the ACC, it’ll be kind of tough for long lasting Big East fans to accept them going to the ACC.  But at the end of the day, the ACC will be the most powerful conference that’s out there. And Syracuse, you know, hopefully…will help with their recruiting and they’ll be one of the top teams over there in the ACC.  As long as we can get the ACC Tournament at the Garden, I don’t care about any of that other stuff.

Dear ESPN The Mag, GTFOHWTBS!

September 22, 2011 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

And just when you thought ESPN The Magazine’s Michael Vick issue was unnecessary and a complete waste of ink, the folks at the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” strike again.  They’ve completely outdone themselves this time and have printed an entire issue dedicated to Boston sports teams and the fans that love them.  Based on Boston’s four teams winning seven titles in the past 10 years, ESPN incorrectly surmised that sports fans elsewhere remotely give a damn.

Now, I know you’re probably thinking that my repugnant reaction to this issue has something to do with the fact that I detest #allbostoneverything, and you’re right.  But, trust me, setting my personal feelings aside, there are other reasons I believe this issue is completely unnecessary and a terrible idea.

For one, it’s utterly disgusting and obnoxious for ESPN to use a national platform, such as this issue, to glorify Boston, or any one city in particular.  For years, ESPN has been criticized by sports fans for catering to the East Coast population and being too Boston-New York obsessed.  After this issue, it’s hard to buy their BS denials about these accusations when they go way left and produce something that alienates anyone outside of Boston.  ESPN’s motto is serving the sports fan everywhere, but based on this issue it seems like they’re only concerned with serving the sports fan in the New England area.  Yes, they need love too, but isn’t that why ESPN Boston was created?

Oh, but Boston fans should feel some type way about this issue, too.  Maybe it’s just me, but is it not insulting to be asked, “Is Tom Brady Too Pretty?”  I mean really.  Does Tom Brady not have three Super Bowl rings?  Does he not hold the record for touchdown passes in a single season and a whole bunch of other things?  Was he not named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated and Sporting News (twice)?  The answers are yes, yes, and yes.  So, why would ESPN reduce Tom Brady to nothing more than a pretty face?  Granted I didn’t actually read the article, so there’s a possibility that it could actually breakdown how pretty Tom Brady’s game is, but I doubt it because only ESPN can successfully and simultaneously offend the same people they’re trying to please.

And then in their failed and insincere attempt to soften the blow to New York sports fans, they have Bill Simmons pen a piece about why this issue was a bad idea. You know what, you can miss me with all that.  There’s no way you’re baiting this New Yorker into picking up an issue to read what he has to say.  I’ve never cared about Bill Simmons’ opinion before, so there’s absolutely zero chance that I’ll be persuaded to care now; even if there is a remote possibility that I may actually agree with him.  And again, if Simmons actually does think this way, then he’s managed to piss off his faithful flock of readers who think everything he says is gospel.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the hits keep coming…this time directed at NHL fans.  ESPN managed to throw NHL fans a bone by including a throwaway line promoting its NHL previews for the upcoming season.  How laughable and transparent is it that ESPN couldn’t care less about who tunes in to watch NHL games considering that they don’t own NHL TV rights?  Well, it’s a good thing that the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup because their fans are probably the only ones who’ll read this issue anyway.

So basically, if you’re keeping score, ESPN has managed to piss off every existing sports fan, even the ones that have an entire issue dedicated them.  Great job.

However, I do find the timing of this issue pretty ironic.  In case you missed it, the New York Yankees clinched the AL East last night while the Boston Red Sox lost…again.  Their season continues to collapse putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy for the second season in a row.  But fear not Red Sox Nation, you can always use the pages from this magazine to wipe away your tears.  And non-Boston fans, like myself, can run this issue through the paper shredder and use it as confetti to celebrate a championship won by a team not named the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics or New England Patriots.

Now please excuse me while I throw up.

NBA Lockout? No problem, NBA 2K12 has you covered with latest edition featuring 15 NBA legends!

August 23, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

I never thought I’d be one of those people that would reminisce about the good ol’ days of anything.  But, with each passing year, I become more nostalgic about two things — 90s hiphop and the NBA.  And apparently I’m not the only one.

Last year, NBA 2K11 successfully turned back time and introduced Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird to their popular 2K Sports franchise. This season, they’ve taken it one step further and have added 15 additional basketball legends to the game along with full rosters that travel as far back as 1964-1965 Boston Celtics and LA Lakers.

In order to take advantage of these new features, you just have to get the W to unlock your desired player or team.  It’s as simple as that.  With the uncanny likeness, signature moves, and replicated jerseys, the presentation will feel very authentic as you relive some of the greatest moments and rivalries in NBA history.

Since the NBA lockout doesn’t seem like it’ll be resolved anytime soon, NBA fans will have to get their NBA fix via NBA 2K12.  While it’s not the real thing, I’d argue that it doesn’t quite get any better than this.  NBA 2K12 is the perfect way to introduce the originators to fans that worship the duplicators because they’re too young to know any better.

If you want to check to see if your favorite team or player made the cut, check out the full classic rosters.  NBA 2K12 will be in stores on October 4.

Until then, watch the trailer and tell me if you also got more hype watching this than you do watching NBA spots promoting the real thing.  The shot of Anthony Mason, John Starks, Patrick Ewing, and Charles Oakley took me back, in a good way.  Sigh, those were the days.
