The Morning After: New York Jets vs New England Patriots (26-29)

October 22, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Jim Rogash/Getty Images

Sigh…yesterday’s  NY Jets 26-29 OT  loss to the New England Patriots was tough to digest. Actually, it still is.  Mark Sanchez and co. had so many opportunities to pull out the win, but just couldn’t get it done.  And as everyone knows, when you’re playing against Tom Brady, you have to play for the win.  Not for the tie, or not to lose the game, but to win it.  Because if given the opportunity, Brady will leave you with nothing but huge regrets.  And that’s exactly what happened last evening.

THE GOOD

- From the first drive, the Jets offense played with purpose and effort.  Tony Sporano didn’t miss the memo with regard to the Pats weak pass defense.  Straight out the gate, Sanchez tested the Pats’ secondary and was rewarded for it.  He led the team to an impressive scoring drive on the Jets’ first possession.  And save for a terrible INT and a fumble which resulted in a safety, Sanchez played well the majority of regulation.  Overall, he was 28/41 and threw for a season-high 328 yards.

- The diminutive Jeremy Kerley, who stands tall at 5’9, has emerged as Sanchez’s most trusted receiver, since Santonio Holmes went down.  Kerley put in incredible work yesterday, catching seven passes for 120 yards.  Now, if he would only stop fielding punt returns at the 5 yard line and instead, let the ball bounce into the endzone for a touchback, he’d really be alright with me.

- Despite playing without Darelle Revis, it seems the Jets defense is finally turning things around. Yesterday they held a top five offense to just 17 points, 259 passing yards, and 131 rushing yards.  Although Rob Gronkowski scored two touchdowns, the Jets secondary neutralized Aaron Hernandez and Wes Welker, not making them much of a threat.  If only the Jets defense hadn’t mailed it in on the Pats game-tying drive to end the fourth quarter, the Jets would’ve left Foxboro with the win.

- Although it was a wasted effort, I can’t deny how clutch Nick Folk has been all season.  Because the Jets have struggled to locate the endzone, we’ve relied on the 11-11 kicker to keep us in the game, and he’s nailed it every time.  Due to kicking 54 and 21 yard field goals earlier in the game, and a 43 yarder minutes before, I incorrectly assumed leg fatigue would result in Folk missing the 43 yard field goal attempt which resulted in the Jets briefly gaining the lead.  In that instance, it felt good to be wrong.  It’s just too bad his teammates let him down.

-  The warrior that is Joe McKnight.

THE BAD

- Only Sanchez can be defined as good and bad, at the same damn time.  But that’s exactly what he was,  yesterday.  We can rely on him to make at least two momentum killing plays per game.   After watching many wild finishes at the end of yesterday’s games, I couldn’t help but wish I had a quarterback that could execute a come from behind win in two minutes or less.  Instead, Jets fans are saddled with a guy who fumbled a snap and had to kick the ball out the endzone to avoid a touchdown recovery by the Pats.  And also the quarterback, who on the last play of the game in OT, thought trying to throw it away was the right call.  Instead of taking the sack and giving his team one more chance to make a miracle happen, the Patriots recovered the ball. Game over.  If the Jets intend on contending, we have to get a quarterback who is equipped to make better decisions when the game is on the line.   Period.

- And speaking of better decision making, why did Tony Sporano call a slant to Chaz Schilens on 3rd and 2?  Aside from a 23 yard pass play to Dustin Keller, the Jets had success grounding and pounding the ball to Shonn Greene most of that drive.  Yet, when we’re in the redzone, and it’s 3rd and 2, the Jets decide to pass?  And to Schilens?!  With the way our offensive line has been blocking lately, there’s no question Tebow or Greene, would’ve gained the first down.  After six games, one would think Sporano and the rest of the coaching staff would improve with regard to when to call Tebow’s number, but they haven’t.  Just another example of how the Jets left points on the field…a huge no no against the Pats.

- I’m not going to kill Stephen Hill for dropping that pass, because aside from that, he played well.  HOWEVER, if Hill would’ve held onto the ball, the Jets would’ve been in a position to win that game.  I know that missed opportunity will haunt him until at least next week, let’s just hope he uses it as motivation to improve and make clutch catches in the near future.  He has the potential to be a star on this team, he can’t allow his butterfingers to hold him back.

THE UGLY

- The amount of ifs and woulds mentioned in this post is sickening, but rather appropriate because it highlights how many missed opportunities the Jets really had.  This loss will definitely rear its ugly head down the road.

Next week, the Dolphins head to Metlife Stadium to seek redemption.  It’s also the final game before the Jets’ Week 9 bye.  Based on the Jets improvements over the past couple of weeks,  I’m optimistic they’ll go into the break with a .500 record.

-@sdotrenee

P.S.  My apologies for abandoning ASE and TMA the past couple of weeks.  I needed to step away a bit to work on some things.  Appreciate the continued support!

The Morning After: NY Jets vs Miami Dolphins (23-20)

September 24, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Robert Mayer/PressWire

WordPress refused to fight fairly this morning. Based on the timing of this post and the switched up format, take one guess who excelled in that battle. Hint: Not me.

Thankfully, the NY Jets were more successful than I. Although the Jets 23-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins in OT wasn’t pretty, any of it, a win is a win. And with that win, the Jets are currently sitting atop the AFC East with a 2-1 record. The Buffalo Bills, division rivals, also hold a 2-1 record, but the Jets have an early advantage because they remain undefeated in the division. However, not even that, coupled with another Patriots loss, is enough to cause ignorance to the colossal fact that the Jets are not a good football team. Period.

Not exactly breaking news, I know, but I wanted to withhold my official ruling until I had an opportunity to see more than two games. We’re now three weeks into the season and the team’s deficiencies at virtually every area of the game are way too obvious to think otherwise. And unfortunately, I don’t see anything improving anytime soon simply because the Jets have been tiredly singing and forcing upon us to the same pitchy, off-beat tune for a while.

Mark Sanchez, now a four-year quarterback, doesn’t have the skill or football IQ to excel at the pro level. Although he has moments of promise, they’re far too fleeting to expect a vast transformation. Terrible redzone efficiency, overthrowing receivers, continuously throwing into cover two and cover three situations are all inherent flaws of his game that are too big to ignore. In the past, the team was able to overcome his deficiencies with a solid running game, an indestructible defense, and a Jets receiving corp that consisted of more than one reliable guy. However, since then, the Jets team as a whole has deteriorated. Our rushing defense is such a joke that we barely beat a team with a rookie quarterback and no legitimate wideouts. If Reggie Bush wasn’t knocked out of the game with an injury, there’s no doubt the Jets would be the team with the 1-2 record.

When will Jets brass finally admit Sanchez is not the answer? If you’re not going to replace him at least give him enough support so he can effectively do his job. The team’s offseason acquisitions did absolutely nothing to benefit Sanchez’s QB-style, which I equate to a four-year old’s bowling style. Keep reading. You’ll get it.

If you take little Johnny bowling, and don’t put up the rails to prevent the ball from rolling into the gutter, yet expect a strike or spare at every turn, you’re wasting your time. Even with the bumpers, it takes the ball forever to make it down the lane, but at least you know there will be some knocked down pins to show for your time. Like little Johnny, Sanchez needs rails in the gutter, or a capable surrounding cast that will rise to the level of his playing ability. Without it he’s lost. Sanchez has never been a particularly good quarterback, it’s just that he’s had bumpers to pad his ok performance that we called Plaxico Burress, Braylon Edwards, Jericho Cotchery, Jim Leonhard, and on and on. Why genius-boy Mike Tannenbaum thought it was more prudent to channel Phil Jackson’s zen-master mind games and sign Tim Tebow to help boost Sanchez’s confidence rather than beef up the receiving corp or defensive unit remains lost on me. He waited until the eleventh hour to finally pull the plug on Wayne Hunter when Hunter should’ve been the first to get the axe after last season. That is extremely concerning because it’s as if there is no sense of urgency to win. Towards the end of last season, all of the Jets’ weak spots were exposed and well-documented. Yet, virtually none of the holes were plugged to start the season. Newsflash: Not only is Rex Ryan an average head coach, but the defensive edge he was lauded for has seemingly disappeared. Was all his strength in his weight? The more pounds he loses, the weaker the defense becomes. The Jets’ defense has been ebbing for a while and is no longer in a position to pick up the slack while the mediocre offense narrowly escapes with wins. That’s especially an ugly truth, now, as the number one shutdown corner in the game, Darrelle Revis, has a torn ACL. *weeps uncontrollably* Without Revis Island to fear, quarterbacks will have free reign to distribute the ball and steamroll the Jets. It’s just all bad.

When a win leaves you with the same yuck mouth taste as a loss, you know it’s going to be an excruciatingly long season. I haven’t completely written them off yet because we’re only heading into Week 4 and stranger things have happened, but with the 49ers coming to town after a shocking loss to the Minnesota Vikings, I’m preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

I know…I’m a typical Jets fan.

Why isn’t ‘Hard Knocks’ on HBO Go?

August 16, 2012 by Shana Renee 4 Comments

Earlier this year, I discontinued my HBO subscription.  Like 98% of the US population, I was searching for ways to reduce my monthly expenses and cutting the cable cord was an obvious first choice.  Though I maintained the basic channels (I’m ’bout it, but not that ’bout it!), all of my premium channels were gone in an instant.  But I was cool with that because most days I channel surfed aimlessly and ultimately settled on classic Seinfeld or Sex and the City episodes anyway.  Plus, with the advent of HBO Go and my dear dad offering to share his HBO Go account info with me, I was set.  In fact, I felt like I was finally getting over on the biggest racket in town, the cable industry…until last week.

Wednesday morning, I planned to launch HBO Go and watch the premiere episode of Hard Knocks: Miami Dolphins, but that didn’t quite work out as planned.  I searched and searched. And searched some more, but was continuously hit with:  “Search Results / 0 results found for ‘hard knocks’.

Excuse me. Come again.

Not only was Episode 1 of the Miami Dolphins season unavailable, but there was also no visible proof HBO had produced six seasons prior to the current one.  I felt like I had completely lost my mind. Next thing I knew, I was asking myself, aloud, “what the hell is going on?”  I never even bothered to search YouTube because I knew there was no way HBO would allow it to live on YouTube if it wasn’t even available on its own site, or so I thought.  But after news of Ochocinco’s arrest overtook twitter last Saturday night, I was subsequently directed to YouTube where Week 1′s full episode had been available since Wednesday.  After hitting play, I suddenly was at peace again.

Phew.  One week down.  Four more to go.

So yesterday, I awoke early to see if the YouTube god’s had blessed me once again by posting the full version of episode 2.  Indeed they had.  But by mid-day it vanished for good.

The same helplessness I felt last week returned.  Fed up, I turned to the ever reliable Google for answers.  I searched, “why isn’t hard knocks on hbo go” and the second listing entitled, “Why You Can’t Watch the Best Show on HBO on HBO Go“ yielded the following information:

It’s a co-production with NFL Films, and NFL Films owns the show’s digital rights, including mobile rights. And HBO Go, for the purposes of rights deals, is considered a mobile service.*

Translation:  it’s about money.  Duh.

And yet another example of how powerful the NFL and its content truly are.  If there were ever an entity able to son a property as mammoth as HBO, it’s the almighty NFL.  After all, ESPN agreed to pay $2 billion annually for Monday Night Football and expanded NFL digital rights because it’s essential to its “serve the fan everywhere” business model.  But for HBO, extending Hard Knocks‘ rights to HBO’s digital platforms is a nice to have.  Reminder (to self), HBO Go is a complementary service offered to its subscribers, who are otherwise known as PAYING customers.  Something I am not.  So, when I think about this rationally, missing Hard Knocks isn’t the end of the world, especially considering how often I consume all of HBO’s other programming that is conveniently available to me via HBO Go.

The outcome of my query was most certainly a let down, but there’s also tremendous value in simply being informed.  I begrudgingly accept that an HBO subscription is absolutely necessary for me to watch Hard Knocks.  But now I can shift my energy from trying to dream up a masterful piracy plan, to finding a local Harlem homey to take pity on my frugal freeloading ass.

The hustle never ends.

WATCH: ‘Hard Knocks’ cameras roll as Chad Johnson’s cut from team

August 15, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via J Pat Carter/AP

When HBO Films agreed to feature the Miami Dolphins on its latest installment of Hard Knocks, I’m sure documenting the antics of Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson was part of the appeal.  His big, showy, and unpredictable personality makes for good TV.  However, considering the unfortunate events that took place over the weekend, they received a whole lot more than hoped.

Thanks to the nimbleness of the HBO Films crew to shoot, cut, and edit compelling footage virtually overnight, viewers had a front row seat to witness Miami Dolphins head coach, Joe Philbin, verbally administer a lethal injection to Johnson, just two days after Johnson was dismissed from the team.  If you missed last night’s episode, like me, fear not.  I swiped the footage from YouTube.  The video below, almost five minutes in length, includes footage from one of the most highly anticipated and memorable moments in Hard Knocks history.

Watch.

Although we’ve seen players get released on Hard Knocks before, I’ll venture to say no other moment packed as much drama.  Be it the starpower of Ochocinco or the severity of the situation and the media circus surrounding it, watching Johnson deliver a halfhearted and untruthful plea to Philbin was, simply put, sad.  In that moment, you get the sense he fears the world of unknowns that await him — career, marriage, endorsements, etc.  The overly cocky Ochocinco that we either love to love, or love to hate, was unusually quiet and at a loss for words. While somewhat expected, watching it play out was palpable.

Also, I must say, from the perspective of a Jets fan, I admire the way Philbin works. His no nonsense approach, straight out the gate, is building a team culture of discipline and focus.  If I were a Dolphins fan, I’d be happy to have him at the helm.  How and if that translates to winning games remains to be seen, but his decisive approach to address and mitigate distractions head on is respected.

Philbin was also very thoughtful during his conversation with Johnson.  Instead of taking the egomaniacal Donald Trump “You’re Fired” route, Philbin expressed they didn’t “mesh”.  Although Philbin didn’t explicitly say Johnson’s personality and poor physical performance on the field (earlier in the episode we see him struggle often) led to Johnson’s demise, had the events over the weekend not transpired, I truly believe it would’ve been a matter of time before the Dolphins dismissed him.  Based on last week’s conversation between Philbin and Johnson, it seemed that Philbin was gently warning Johnson, one false move and you’re done, kid.  Johnson unwittingly tested him and got clipped.

While Ochocinco’s stint on HBO’s Hard Knocks has concluded, his place in the real world of hard knocks is beginning.  But let’s hope he can recover. It would really be a huge disappointment for his actions from the past few days to be the final footnote on his career resume.

Hard Knocks Returns, Serena’s Out, T.O.’s Cut, and much more!

May 30, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via AP

What to blog about for Wednesday? Well, lots happened on Tuesday and I just couldn’t decide.  When this happens, I usually do one of two things.  Either allow my inability to focus overtake me and say eff it.  Or, I summarize the day of events with quick hits on some (not all!) of the most newsworthy topics.  Today I went with the latter, and even included what to watch for tonight.  If you want more details on each story, click the blue links.

Let’s get into it.

NFL

It’s a Hard Knock life, for….the Miami Dolphins

FINALLY! It’s been confirmed that the Miami Dolphins will be the featured team on the 2012 edition of HBO’s Hard Knocks series.  After being turned down by virtually every other team in the league, the Dolphins stepped up to take advantage of this great opportunity.  Aside from Reggie Bush, viewers will be able to get to know the team’s new head coach, Joe Philbin.  Another intriguing storyline surrounding the team is its quarterback situation.  Who will ultimately land that job?  Will it be last year’s starter Matt Moore who redeemed the team from an 0-7 start, veteran David Garrard, or rookie Mike Tannenhill?  I guess we’ll have to tune in to find out.  The new season debuts on August 7 at 10PM/EST.  Will you be watching?

T.O.’s cut from IFL team

And just when you thought Terrell Owens’s appearance on Dr. Phil and the public humiliation that came along with it was the lowest point of his career, he went and out did himself.  Yesterday Owens was released by the Allen Wranglers, an Indoor Football League team.   Why?  Apparently, he violated his contract.  Although T.O. was only contractually obligated to play in home games, the Wranglers are counting T.O.’s refusal to play in two upcoming road games that impact their playoff hopes as a violation.  He also was a no-show at a mandatory children’s hospital community event.  Or, in other words, the team wanted an out and T.O. gave it to them.  They finally recognized what everyone in the NFL has known for years, he’s impossible to deal with.  Sure, signing T.O. was a great PR stunt for the league initially, but the buzz has since died. Yet, T.O.’s selfish and entitled attitude has remained.  When it’s all said and done, paying Owens a six figure salary and giving him a 30 percent stake in the team simply wasn’t worth it to the Wranglers.  As a result, he’s off the team, out of a check, and his 30 percent stake in the team.  Only time will tell where he goes from here.

NBA

Who gone stop ‘em?  The Spurs that is.

After defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 120-111, the Spurs notched their 20th consecutive win.  Yes, OKC put up a good fight, and even came within 7 points within the final two minutes of the game, but even that and Kevin Durant’s 31 points, Russell Westbrook’s 27 points, and James Harden’s 30 points weren’t enough to stop Greg Popovich’s team.  They’re so good, they’re like a machine.  Now the series shifts to OKC.  The Thunder have the livest home crowd in the league.  I expect them to help will the Thunder to their first win against the Spurs, but that’s about it.  Spurs in 5.

Miami Heat vs Boston Celtics

Game 2 of  the Heat and Celtics tips-off tonight at 8:30PM/ET on ESPN.  Despite hating both teams, it appears that I hate the Celtics slightly less than the Heat, because that’s who I’m rooting for.  #TeamBeatTheHeat

NBA Draft Lottery

This goes down tonight on ESPN at 8PM/ET.  Michael Jordan’s awful Charlotte Bobcats have the greatest chance, 25%, of landing Anthony Davis, presumably the No. 1 pick from Kentucky.  The Washington Wizards are a close second with 19.9%.

Straight Nonsense

DeShawn Stevenson, NJ Nets, has a real live and what appears to be a functioning ATM in his kitchen. Yes, really.

 NHL

Stanley Cup Begins Tonight

Tonight the LA Kings host the NJ Devils in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup.  The game starts at 8PM/EST on NBC.

SOCCER

USA vs Brazil Tonight

Tonight is a busy night for sports.  But in between the Stanley Cup, Eastern Conference Finals, NBA Draft Lottery, and MLB games, be sure to check out the US Men’s National Soccer team as they play Brazil.  This game is exciting because USA’s confidence is soaring after their 5-1 victory against Scotland. Will they be able to prove that the drumming handed to Scotland wasn’t a fluke?  Tune in to find out tonight.  The match begins at 7:50PM/ET on ESPN2.

TENNIS

Serena Williams Out

I’m still at a loss for words.  My favorite, Serena Williams, lost in the first round of the French Open yesterday.  Virgine Razzano of France, who is ranked 111th in the world, beat her in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.  I have nothing else to say about this.

Women’s NCAA Basketball

Pat Summitt Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Obama presented Coach Pat Summitt with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House, yesterday.  In April, Summitt, who’s suffering from dementia, resigned after coaching 38 seasons, 1,098 victories, and eight NCAA titles.  The Medal of Freedom is the highest honor a civilian can receive, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving.  Congrats to Coach Summitt.

Dissecting the NY Jets 2012 schedule

April 18, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via NY Jets

It’s beginning to smell a lot like football.

The NFL finally released its 2012 schedule, and I immediately rushed to see what kind of hand the Jets were dealt.  My immediate reaction: not bad.  Despite some unknowns still being in place, the team’s core pieces are already set.  Let’s take a look at the schedule to see what to watch for starting in September.  But first, a few interesting things to note:

- The Jets will play in four prime-time games.

- The Jets do not play the Baltimore Ravens this season…thankfully.

- Get your dessert ready, the Jets play the New England Patriots Thanksgiving evening.

- We’ll all be spared the nonstop hype machine of Tebow vs Broncos/Manning because the Jets will not face the Denver Broncos.

- The Jets also don’t face the NY Giants this season.

Here are some important games to circle on the calendar:

Week 1, Sunday 9.9 vs Buffalo, 1PM

- The Jets open the season against the Bills, a division rival. Last year the Bills surprised the league after getting off to a 4-2 start, including a win against the Patriots. Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, wowed Bills personnel and cashed in on a big payday. But after the ink dried on the contract, Fitzpatrick’s play steadily declined. The Bills eventually finished the season with a 6-10 record. This off season, the most notable acquisition the Bills made was signing defensive end Mario Williams. Regardless of who opens the season at quarterback for the Jets, Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow, either one will have a challenge with the Bill’s front line, especially if the Jets don’t replace Wayne Hunter and upgrade at the right tackle position.

Considering last season ended on such a sour note, the Jets need to get the early win for morale sake.

Week 2: Sunday 9.16 @ Pittsburgh, 4:15PM

- Out with the old, in with the new…offensive coordinators that is.  Both the Jets and Steelers brought in new guys to run the offense this season, Tony Sporano and Todd Haley; respectively.  With only two games into the regular season, and the history the Steelers and Jets have created during the Tomlin-Ryan era, this game should be entertaining.

Week 3: Sunday 9.23 at Miami, 1PM

- Another divisional game.  First-year coach Joe Philbin, no Brandon Marshall, and a question mark at the quarterback position means that it’s a tossup as far as how good the Dolphins will be.  I expect the Jets to take full advantage of this.  Plus, I believe the team will be fired up as Sporano returns to Miami for the first time since being fired as head coach.  The Jets will want to represent for him, and won’t have a problem doing that.

Week 4:  Sunday 9.30 vs San Francisco, 1PM

- This will be the Jets’ first real test of the season.  Under Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers quickly rose to an elite team in the league.  It’ll be interesting to see how the Jets stack up against the NFC West champs in Week 4.

Week 5: Monday 10.8 vs Houston, 8:30PM

- This is the first of two Monday Night Football games for the Jets.  Last season the Jets had a difficult time stopping running backs.  The Texans have Arian Foster.  Houston may be a problem.

Week 6: Sunday 10.14 vs Indianapolis, 1PM

- Since Peyton Manning’s in Denver, seeing the Colts on the schedule feels like a gimme.  This game will be our first look at Andrew Luck, assuming the Colt’s select him with the first pick.

Week 7: Sunday 10.21 at New England, 4:15PM

-  Tom Brady will continue to do Tom Brady-like things, so the game plan with him won’t change.  However, last season the Jets and everyone else in the league were killed by the Rob Gronkowski-Aaron Hernandez tandem.  And if there was one major area of improvement for the Jets on defense, it was at the safety position.  The jury is still out on whether or not Jim Leonhard will return to the Jets, but signing Laron Landry is definitely an upgrade.  If Landry plays up to his potential and meets expectations, it could be a whole new ballgame.

Week 8: Sunday 10.28 vs Miami, 1PM

- This game could be huge for the Jets depending on our record in the division.  If we lose to the Pats the week before, this will be a must win for Gang Green and our AFC East standings.

Week 9: Bye

Week 11:  Sunday 11.18 at St. Louis, 4:05PM

- The Jets travel to the Lou and face their old offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.  It’ll be up to Sporano to call one helluva game plan in order to stay one step ahead of Schotty, especially if Sanchez is still the starter.

Week 12: Thursday 11.22 vs New England, 8:20PM

- Here we go with this BS.  Just four short days after the Rams game, the Jets and the Pats meet up again, this time in prime-time on Thanksgiving Night.  You have ample notice.  Start planning your Turkey Day early exit strategy accordingly.

Week 13: Sunday 12.2 vs Arizona, 1PM

- This game matters because the Jets will have a 10-day layover after playing New England.  Depending on the outcome of the Pats game, and the Jets record overall, they will either need to take advantage of all the extra practice time after losing to the Pats, or they can have a few extra days to rest up before facing Larry Fitzgerald and the Cardinals.

Week 15:  Monday, 12.17 at Tennessee, 8:30PM

- This game against the Titans is the second and final Monday Night Football game of the season.  After the disappointing season Chris Johnson had in 2011, I expect him to be at the top of his game.  But by mid-December, CJ may have tired legs.  Wishful thinking?  Regardless, I have a feeling the Wild Card race will be pretty intense at this point, and this game will matter.

Week 16:  Sunday,12.23 vs San Diego, 8:20PM

- This is the last prime-time game of the season for the Jets, and a potential nail biter with playoff implications.

Week 17: Sunday 12.30 at Buffalo, 1PM

- The Jets finish the season how it began, against the Bills, but this time on the road.  The Jets typically wait until the final week or two of the season to learn its playoff fate.  Although I don’t expect the Jets to lose this game, this game could make or break our season.

All things considered, the Jets were dealt a fair schedule.  Missing the playoffs certainly has its privileges. With this being the case, my expectations are pretty high.  Between learning a new offense and a possible QB change mid-season, I predict the Jets finish the season with a 10-6 record.  They won’t blow teams out the water, but I do expect them to land a Wild Card spot and return to the playoffs.

Which Jets games are you most looking forward to this season?

Colts could sign Luck Friday; Dolphins’ fans launch “Manning to Miami” campaign

February 23, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via manningtomiami.com

And the plot thickens.  Yesterday ProFootball Talk reported, new terms in the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement regarding the rookie wage scale allows the team with the No. 1 draft pick the ability sign its top choice months before NFL draft night.  This means, after some coin tosses lock in the draft order and confirm the Indianapolis Colts have the No. 1 pick, Andrew Luck, presumably, could be a Colt as soon as Friday…as in, tomorrow.

If that happens, this latest move by Jim Irsay will be a clear indicator that Peyton will most likely continue his career elsewhere.  While such turn of events were unforeseen a year ago, its doubtful Peyton will be unemployed for long if passionate fans of the Tennessee Titans or Miami Dolphins have their way.  They both recently launched Peyton Manning campaigns in an effort to lure him to their team.

First the fans of Tennessee launched a website, comehomepeyton.com.  While the site is pathetically basic in this 2.0 digital world, it appears the creators invested most of their effort in remixing George Michael’s, “Faith”, calling it “Gotta Have Peyton”, and shooting a video.  Yes, it’s as terrible as it sounds.

But not to be outdone, the fans of South Florida also flexed their creative muscles and launched a multiplatform campaign called Bring Manning to Miami.

The campaign includes a website, manningtomiami.com, which is slicker than Tennessee’s, a billboard that’s displayed near the Dolphin’s facility in Fort Lauderdale, merchandising, and a social media component via twitter.

Also in true Miami fashion, the fans spared no expense and photoshopped a No. 18 Dolphins uni on Manning to complete their vision.   And to further prove they mean business, the developers included the following message to Peyton Manning and Dolphins brass in an effort to seal the deal:

Be Part OF “The Movement” and Make History – BRING MANNING TO MIAMI – This site has been created to help influence Peyton Manning and the Miami Dolphins that “Manning to Miami” is a movement and marriage that the entire South Florida community is behind. Tell family, friends (even enemies), tell co-workers, business associates to cast their vote and make a difference in Bringing Manning to Miami.

How many wins is Manning worth? When’s the last time we the fans have had an “impact” quarterback? What about the most cerebral quarterback of all time?

Get behind this movement and let your vote be your voice and make a difference!

By filling out this form you are casting a vote to bring Manning to Miami and a list of names will be presented to the Miami Dolphins and representatives of Peyton Manning.

Redskins Nation, your move.

Brian Schottenheimer’s Outta Here!

January 11, 2012 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

New York Jets’ fans finally got our wish! After six seasons with the Jets, Brian Schottenheimer is moving on.

Last night, I went to bed with the understanding that the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Mike Mularkey over Schottenheimer as their new head coach. This was disappointing because I thought we’d be stuck with Schotty for another season, or at least until someone else decided to take him off our hands. But with that contingency, I figured if anyone is remotely aware of the play calling decisions he made this past season, there was absolutely no way anyone would hire him, save for his dad, Marty Schottenheimer, who’s up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching job.

But as it turns out, this decision was made before the season ended. Reports suggest, prior to the last game, Schottenheimer personally decided not to return next season. He recognized that in the six seasons he’d been with the Jets, there was no more left for him to accomplish. In fact, he was once looked upon as a young talented coach, but the past couple of seasons have done nothing but reverse the positive perception of someone with a career on the rise and tarnish his image. As a result, Schottenheimer made a game-changing decision we can all agree with, finally!

While it’s water under the bridge, I believe the timing of Schotty’s announcement contributed to the reason the Jets showed zero signs of cohesion in the final three games of the season. Schottenheimer’s head nor heart were in the game and it manifested itself in the horrible on field performance of the team. Although Rex Ryan attempted to put up a unified front by denying media reports that offensive coaches would be gutted, the truth has since been revealed as Schottenheimer also joins offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who was hired by the Dallas Cowboys, and wide receiver coach Henry Ellard as former Jets employees.

Although the offensive line and wide receiver coaching positions remain vacant, reports indicate former Miami Dolphins head coach, Tony Sparano will replace Schottenheimer. Considering Sparano is a lot green in the play-calling area, it remains to be seen if the Jets are better off. However, Sparano is known for and respected as an offensive line/running coach, which is another area of improvement for the Jets. The team will absolutely benefit from his experience because the offensive line deteriorated before our very eyes over the course of the season.

So what can we expect from Sparano besides the obvious wildcat? The Jets will return to what’s worked in the past, focusing on the running game. Although he was fired, Sparano helped transform Reggie Bush form an injury prone under performing back to a stud who rushed for over 1,000 yards for the first time in his six-year career. Similarly, Shonn Greene also rushed for his first 1,000+ season, and with LaDainian Tomlinson leaning toward retirement, we’ll need to get someone who can get the same, if not more, mileage out of Greene and LT’s replacement. Sparano may be that guy.

Also, making the running game a priority will take pressure off of Sanchez. With Schottenheimer’s suspect play-calling aside, Sanchez was exposed for his inability to make fundamental decisions expected from a three-year NFL starting quarterback. Mentally, his brain cramped up mid-game which resulted in too many interceptions, sacks, wasted timeouts, fumbles and so on.

Having said that, the Jets are rumored to hire a quarterback coach to work with Mark Sanchez, because until he’s fixed, the offense will remain broken. The team has invested in Sanchez and have no intentions of going in a different direction, so the Jets must prioritize and guarantee he gets the help he needs. Under Schottenheimer, Sanchez regressed, big time, and it’s going to take a lot of physical and emotional coaching to regain Sanchez’s confidence.

Thankfully with the lockout behind us, the Jets (read: Sanchez) will benefit from OTAs and a full training camp, this off season. Unfortunately, Sanchez isnt the type of player that can be effective with on-the-job-training. This past season, Sanchez was surrounded by a completely different receiving corp and he never had a chance to develop chemistry with his new go to guys. That, and the shaky playcalling by Schotty set Sanchez back, in a major way.

So far the decision to hire Sparano indicates that Jets brass are not deaf nor blind to the problem areas of the team. I’m optimistic the Jets will continue to develop a coaching staff that addresses all of the major concerns of the team. But if this coaching experiment with Sparano and whomever else comes aboard doesn’t yield a return to the playoffs, the 2012 season could and should be the end of the Rex Ryan/Mark Sanchez era.

NY Jets vs Miami Dolphins: The Morning After

January 2, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

By now we know the Miami Dolphins eliminated the NY Jets from the playoffs.  The final score was 19-17.

Although there are many heartbroken Jets fans this morning, I’m not one of them.  Unfortunately, this worst case scenario of not finishing with a winning record and missing the playoffs is necessary if we expect to see changes anytime soon.  Had the Jets returned to the playoffs, the team would’ve continued to use Mark Sanchez’s “success” as a reason to keep things status quo.  Instead, the loss forces the team to fully assess their deficiencies and make some long overdue changes, starting with the offense’s coaching staff.  Although I believe Sanchez will return next season, we can rest easier this winter knowing Brian Schottenheimer has finally used up his ninth life. (I hope.)

OK, let’s dive into the final good, bad, and ugly of the season.

THE GOOD

- Jeremy Kerley was the only bright spot on an otherwise disappointing day filled with many lowlights.  He not only threw for the longest pass of the day, 41 yards, but he also logged 71 receiving yards.  The rookie put up impressive numbers on a day where it  seemed that many of his veteran teammates were unprepared to have an impact on a must-win game.

THE BAD

- Nothing new here.  Collectively, the team didn’t do enough to win the game.  Mark Sanchez showed multiple signs of regression against the Dolphins.  His poor decision making and inability to understand when he should throw the ball away versus run out of bounds screams that his starting position should be in jeopardy.  Also, throwing for three interceptions and having the ball land in the hands of Miami’s defensive end, Randy Starks, twice, should not be overlooked.  To put things in perspective, Starks had two more catches than the Jets’ number one receiver, Santonio Holmes.  You do the math.

And the defense was no better.  They allowed a 21-play, 94-yard, 12:29 drive with six third down conversions that resulted in a touchdown and 13-10 lead for the Dolphins.  The Jets never reclaimed the lead.  The worn out defense desperately needed to make a stop, but were unsuccessful.  Allowing the Dolphins to eat up that much of the clock resulted in the Jets dying a slow death as seconds ticked away.  And yet despite that, the Jets were still in a position to win the game, but eventually came up short because of the offense’s ineptitude.

THE UGLY

- Santonio Holmes completely showed his ass.  Barking at teammates, in the huddle, when a win was within reach is inexcusable.  Holmes’ actions led to him being benched on the final drive.  After the game, Ryan said he was unaware that Holmes had been pulled from the game.  He thought Holmes removed himself.  However, reports now indicate Brian Schottenheimer was responsible for making that call.

Here’s the thing.  Discord among players happen.  When the season is on the line and the team isn’t playing well, it’s natural for tempers to flare.  However, the clear lack of communication among the coaches is exactly why the Jets’ season ended on Sunday.  Rex Ryan, who was once considered to be the the number one coach that both players and coaches wanted to work for has lost control of his team.  After successfully hyping them to believe they’re the best, and motivating them to go on impressive runs for two consecutive years, it now seems the honeymoon is over.  The team, or at least Holmes, is no longer responsive and blinded by  smoke and mirrors.  Frustration with the game plan mounted and imploded at the most inopportune time, further marring a long season full of flops.

It’s clear the Jets have lots of work ahead of them this off season.  Stay tuned for a postmortem.  I’ll go in on the necessary changes to the coaching personnel and also provide an in depth assessment of who should stay and who should be clipped.  I hope to post it later this week.  Until then, go Giants?

5 Hot Topics (not named Tebow, Sanchez, or Eagles) to Keep Turkey Day Convo Flowing!

November 24, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Happy Thanksgiving! As you prepare to gather round the table with friends and families, use these five go-to sports topics as lifelines when your family gets a little too tipsy off the eggnog and takes it…”there”. You’re welcome!

No. 1: NFL is King!

- Today we have some good NFL games on deck. All three games have some sort of playoff implications. The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions get things going early today at 12:30PM/ET. So make sure you’re where you need to be before kickoff. Will the Packers remain undefeated or will Suh and the Lions, who are currently three games behind the Packers, put the pressure on Rodgers and draw nearer in the NFC North?

- Weeks ago the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys game would’ve been a perfect time for you to schedule a much needed nap. But the Dolphins are surging at the right time having won their last three games. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are still so inconsistent no one knows what to expect. But regardless, the Cowboys are tied with the Giants for first place in the NFC East. While a loss won’t shatter the Cowboys chances of winning the division, they need the win to give themselves the best shot at beating out the Giants, especially considering they’re scheduled to face the Giants two times before the regular season ends.

- In the third and final game of the day, those of you lucky enough to have the NFL Network will get to watch the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers go head-to-head in primetime. For the Ravens to have a shot at winning the division, they must win out the rest of the season as they are neck-and-neck with the 7-3 Pittsburgh Steelers. Meanwhile, the 9-1 49ers continue to impress. A win today will put them thisclose to locking up the division. Not to mention, the Harbaugh Brothers, Jim and John, are also squaring off today.

No. 2: NBA Lockout!

- NBA owners and players resumed talks on Tuesday, which continued through yesterday. The two sides will regroup on Friday. Since there’s technically no union right now, both sides are hoping to reach a settlement for the suits filed in court. If and when a settlement is reached, then the players association can re-form and a CBA agreement can be reached. It’s very similar to how the NFL Lockout played out. The impetus for the resumed talks is an attempt to salvage the Christmas Day games. If you’ve paid attention the past few months, David Stern has repeatedly said that it takes 30 days from the day an agreement is reached to resume action on the court. And if  you look on the calendar, you’ll notice we’re less than 24-hours removed from D-day. That means no Boston Celtics/NY Knicks or Dallas Mavericks/ Miami Heat or LA Lakers/Chicago Bulls. But both sides are hoping to avoid such an outcome by giving it another go.

No. 3: The BCS is a Mess!

- The BCS situation keeps getting messier and messier every week and I love it. The first two months of the season were a dream scenario for the BCS committee. But now all hell has broken loose over the past few weeks with Alabama, Oklahoma State and Stanford losing. With the way things are shaping up, and three SEC teams ranked No. 1-3 of the BCS Standings, are we looking at a National Championship Game with two SEC teams? An SEC team that didn’t even win its division? Suddenly there’s a lot more riding on tomorrow’s game between No. 1 LSU and No. 3 Arkansas. Meanwhile, you have an undefeated Houston team ranked No. 8 who probably won’t have a shot at playing in the championship game. This situation has become one big cluster. Although it’s fun watching the BCS weasel its way out of a situation they created, it’s also frustrating as hell. Just give us a playoff already!

- And the Heisman Race is also wide open. While most people thought Andrew Luck would have it locked up by now, he’s fallen out of favor. Trent Richardson and Brandon Wheeden, Robert Griffin III, and Matt Barkley all have legit chances of walking away with the honor. Watch Eddie George and Pat Forde breakdown how this came to be.

No. 4: Penn State’s Pedophilia and Syracuse Too?

- Two more victims have come forward accusing Jerry Sandusky of molestation, and one is a family member! Is this a case of monkey see monkey do? I don’t know, but that’s what Sandusky’s lawyer would like us to believe. Are you buying it?

- Meanwhile, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim continues to be a solider in supporting his friend and assistant coach Bernie Fine amid the allegations that he too is a child molester. As Boeheim said, the “new” reports against Fine are actually old news and date back to 2005. At the time, investigators were unable to uncover details that supported the claims against Fine. So if this is the case, then why all of a sudden is this news again? Well, for what it’s worth, here’s one theory. But, I caution you to keep things in perspective. What we have is one media outlet pointing fingers at another media company. In other words, can’t trust it!

No. 5: Urban Meyer to OSU?

- Who the hell knows. While every report has suggested Urban Meyer will coach Ohio State University after one-year of leaving Florida to “spend more time with his family”, he denies this. He issued the following statement thru his current employer, ESPN, “I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place.” Unfortunately for him, this less than convincing statement did nothing to put the seven-year $40 million rumor mill to bed. After all, this is college football, and most importantly Urban Meyer and OSU we’re talking about. In other words, Meyer’s word is worthless. And when Meyer is announced as OSU’s head coach next week, this’ll go down as one of the worst kept secrets in history right next to the fake Kardashian/Humphries nuptials.

In other random sports news…

- Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife, Linda, was awarded 70% of his liquid assets in their divorce settlement. According to reports, Linda received $7.44 million of the couple’s $10.41 million that was held in bank and investment accounts. The Hulkster got the remaining $2.97 million. But, wait…there’s more! Linda will also receive 40% ownership in his various companies and he’ll pay her an additional $3 million “property settlement. Something tells me Linda is having the best Thanksgiving ever. Meanwhile, Hulk Hogan just suffered the worst smackdown of his career.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I am especially thankful to each and every one of you who have visited, shared, read, liked, tweeted anything about my blog. I get such a high knowing that people actually take time out their days to read my thoughts. It continues to blow my mind! #gobblegobble
