#ThrowbackThursday: Larry Johnson’s Four Point Play!

May 9, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Larry Johnson’s four point play is one of my fondest Knicks memories of all time.  It’s also an extremely fitting #ThrowbackThursday moment given the current Knicks-Pacers series, so here we go.

My brother and I attended Game 3 of the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals between the Knicks and Pacers.  We were, without exaggeration, seated at the very highest level of the Garden. Talk about nosebleeds.  If we jumped too high, it was quite possible we’d suffer a concussion from hitting our heads on the roof.  But none of that mattered to me because I was one of 18,000 fans who could actually say I witnessed one of the greatest Knicks plays of all time in person.

Because I was seated so high, I stood for most of the game, especially the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.  Regardless of how great your vision is or an arena’s sight lines are, when you’re that high up, the angles are unfavorable.  Every player looks unrecognizable…like an ant.

As the final minutes of the game turned to seconds, and it became a one to two possession game, I was shook.  I could not stomach the moment.  It wasn’t Game 7, but the rivalry between the Knicks and Pacers was so intense that every game mattered.  They were all must wins.  And at this point, the series was tied 1-1.  Prior to Game 3, both games had been won by the slimmest of margins, three points or less.  Game 3 was proving to be no different. With 11.9 seconds remaining, the Pacers led the Knicks by 3 points.  I took a deep breath, shot up a prayer and thought to myself, here we go again.

Charlie Ward inbounded the ball to Larry Johnson and the Pacers almost came up with the steal.  I began to implode emotionally.  My nerves kicked into overdrive and everything around me slowed down.  LJ, however, maintained possession and his cool.    Antonio Davis was playing LJ real tight. As the seconds ticked away, I thought is LJ going to be able to even get off a shot? If he did, would it be a good shot? I never even fathomed the idea of a four point play being an option.  In my mind, he’d either tie the game and send it to overtime, or miss the shot and ruin the night of every Knicks fan everywhere.

We all know what happened next.

LJ launched the three and it seemed like an eternity between the release of the ball and the made shot. As you’ll see in the video, when 18K fans realized LJ knocked down the shot to tie the game, it was if someone pressed an eject button.  All at once, we jumped to our feet, exploding with excitement and disbelief.  The high fives and hugs among strangers were never-ending.  I yelled so loudly that I became dizzy and had visions of stars.  Eventually, we all managed to settle down so LJ could concentrate on his free throw.  But when it was clear that LJ nailed the game winning foul shot, every inch of MSG began to rock again with fans super charged from the greatest adrenaline rush one could ever experience.  Whatever feeling you’re imagining right now, it was that times a million.

Here’s footage from one of the most dramatic moments in Knicks playoffs history.

Whenever I visit the Garden or see Larry Johnson, I think about this play.  For me, it’s definitely a top five sports moment.  Without a doubt.

Lone MVP Voter explains why Carmelo Anthony got his vote over LeBron James

May 6, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Over the weekend, it was announced that LeBron James was voted Most Valuable Player for the 2012-2013 NBA season.  The news wasn’t surprising at all as LeBron was undoubtedly the most consistent and dominant player of the season.  While there were many other strong candidates, such as Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, also up for consideration, the majority of fans and NBA insiders agreed that LeBron deserved the award.  But when news broke that one voter out of 121, was responsible for LeBron not being a unanimous pick everyone wondered who could or would do such a thing.

Well, as it turns out, and this was a shock to everyone, Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, ironically, was the lone voter to go against LeBron.  After many people falsely accused the New York media for voting for Carmelo Anthony, Washburn outed himself in his column and explained how Melo earned his vote.  Here’s part of what he wrote,

Anthony led the league in scoring average and basically carried an old Knicks team to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Amar’e Stoudemire missed most of the season with knee issues, Raymond Felton missed six weeks, and Tyson Chandler dealt with nagging injuries, leaving Anthony, J.R. Smith, and a bunch of lottery picks from the mid-1990s to win 54 games and beat the Miami Heat three times….So my vote had more to do with Anthony and less to do with the dominance of LeBron. If you were to take Anthony off the Knicks, they are a lottery team. James plays with two other All-Stars, the league’s all-time 3-point leader, a defensive stalwart, and a fearless point guard. The Heat are loaded….And the fact that Anthony is struggling in the playoffs, three weeks after I cast my vote, is a serious case of Wednesday morning quarterbacking. Anthony scored 50 points at Miami April 2 and averaged 36.9 points in April when the Knicks were trying to lock down the Atlantic Division and the No. 2 seed.

I  can’t argue with LeBron winning MVP this season.  However, Washburn certainly makes some valid points regarding Melo.  Melo not only carried the Knicks team all season long, but he carried them to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.  At the beginning of the season, many of the same sportswriters who voted for LeBron set low expectations for the Knicks.  Opinions were mixed about whether the Knicks were even capable of being one of the Top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference.  Hell, many incorrectly predicted the Brooklyn Nets would have a more successful season than the Knicks.  The Knicks were labeled old, and it was largely believed that the oldest team in the league would limp into the playoffs.  Sure, the Knicks suffered many injuries and casualties along the way, but Melo put the team on his back and played lights out down the stretch, when it counted most.

As Washburn intimated, the hot-handed Melo that the Knicks rode throughout the season is currently MIA.  He’s struggled mightily in the playoffs.  However, Melo’s recent struggles do not make his regular season heroics insignificant.  As a Knicks fan, I just hope Melo’s able to remind everyone why he was a strong contender for MVP in the first place.  And quickly.

Come on, Melo. Don’t make a liar out of the one sportswriter who had your back.

WHO:

Knicks (46-26) vs Miami(58-15)

WHEN:

8PM/ET on TNT

W2W4:

First of all, props to J.R. Smith for receiving Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors.  During the Knicks current eight-game winning streak, Smith has led the charge.  He averaged 29.8 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 54% from the floor and 46% from 3.  After he missed out on being voted onto the All-Star team, this individual honor is a nice form of revenge.  It must also be rewarding for Smith to know that not only has the evolution of his game of driving to the hole been recognized, but it’s also appreciated.  Nice.

Moving on…One week ago, Knicks vs Heat was a must-see game as both teams were surging.  However, in the past few days, the game has lost some of its luster.  The Heat’s impressive 27 game winning streak was ended by the Chicago Bulls and today, the Heat announced that LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Mario Chalmers would sit out tonight’s game.  Without those three, instincts would suggest the Knicks were likely to walk over the Heat, especially based upon their recent play.  But history has proven, night in and night out, no NBA team should be taken for granted, especially the reigning NBA champs.  In fact, James, Wade, and Chalmers sat out against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, and still, the Heat managed to win the game.  Furthermore, according to ESPN.com, the Heat are 6-1 in the past three seasons when only one of its Big Three plays.  This suggests that regardless of being the first or the fifteenth player off the Heat’s bench, Heat players have a winner’s mentality and are able to step up when called upon.

Although the Knicks have already beaten the Heat in Miami, it’s typically a tough place to win. All season, the Heat have only dropped three games at home.  It’ll be Mike Woodson’s job to keep the Knicks focused on playing the same type of dominant, defensive-minded ball that has spurred them along the past eight games.  One way to do that is to remind the Knicks how they whooped the Heat by 20 points while playing without Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire in early Decemeber.  With just 10 games to go in the regular season, the Knicks can’t afford to slack up.  The battle for the second seed rages on between the Pacers and Knicks.

Tyson Chandler is improving, but remains a game-time decision.  However, he’s expected to start if he plays.

PREDICTION:

Knicks win.

NEXT GAME:

NY Knicks @ Atlanta Hawks:  Wednesday @ 7PM/ET, MSG & ESPN

VIDEO: LeBron James Posterizes Jason Terry

March 18, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Oh word, Jason Terry, what was that about you being unimpressed by the Heat’s streak and anything they do?

I knew the Heat would have something to say about that, and after seeing this dunk, I couldn’t think of a more emphatic response by the Heat than to have Dwyane Wade heist the ball from Terry, dish it off to Mario Chalmers, who dished it off to Norris Cole, who tossed it up and perfectly set up LeBron James’s posterization of Terry.

Nasty.

Daddy Daycare: Dwyane Wade + Jay Bilas Join Dove Men+Care Campaign; Plus D. Rose’s Generous Offer to Chicago Family

March 14, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

In recent years, March Madness fans have become accustomed to the TV ad campaigns executed by Dove Men+Care.  They often feature current or former NBA athletes who made a name for themselves during the NCAA Tournament, college basketball coaches and also experts.  Magic Johnson, Steve Nash, Shaquille O’Neal and John Thompson are a few basketball greats who have participated in the campaign in the past.  This year, the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade and ESPN college basketball expert Jay Bilas were tapped to represent the brand.  The campaign’s theme is fatherhood and shows the proud papas in ‘Real Moments’ with their real children.

According to the official press release,

The “Real Moments” campaign reveals an unexpected glimpse into Bilas’s and Wade’s life experiences via “how-to” formatted stories with a comedic twist.  While fans may believe that ‘mastering the drive’ is a basketball focused activity for Jay Bilas, what he really cares about is finding the time to sit shotgun while guiding his daughter behind the wheel. Dwyane Wade shares that the best method for ‘staying in shape’ is not solely about hitting the gym, but playing in a bouncy house or swimming pool with his sons.

Wade, who’s been very vocal about the role his children play in his life, had this to say about the campaign, “The real moments in my Dove®Men+Care™ campaign capture the joy and excitement my boys and I feel when we are all together.  Being a father is the most rewarding aspect of my life and my children teach me, just as much as I teach them.”

Take a look at all four of the fun and playful spots below.

Continuing with the fatherhood theme, but on a much sadder note, another senseless tragedy took place in Chicago earlier this week.  A father, Jonathan Watkins, and his six-month-old daughter, Johnylah Watkins, suffered multiple gunshot wounds while changing her diaper in the front seat of his van. Unfortunately the baby, who was shot at five times, didn’t survive.

This story hit Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose close to home.  The new father to a four-year-old son generously offered to cover the funeral expenses for baby Johnylah.  While Rose is a Chicago native, it’s often easy to become numb to the senseless violence that’s destroying the community on a daily basis.  Not to mention the personal stress he’s dealing with as he continues to rehab from his ACL injury.  I doubt his gesture was attention seeking, but I wanted to acknowledge his thoughtfulness because athletes are often perceived as selfish.  However, this Rose story does a great job of dispelling that generality.  My condolences go out to the family.  Chicago, please do better.

Here are details on what took place, in cased you missed it.

LeBron James x “Carmex”?

March 3, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

James x Carmex

Yep, you read that right. The extremely bright sneakers you saw LeBron James wearing during the first half of the New York Knicks game came courtesy of his partnership with “Carmex” via Nike. The deal, which was inked in 2011, is another example of Nike outfitting LeBron in kicks inspired by his favorite things.  Remember the “Fruity Pebbles IV“?

According to Patrick M. Hodgdon, a member of Carmex’s marketing team, the popular lip balm company gifted LeBron with a pair of these sneakers when they sponsored the half-court shot at American Airlines Arena earlier this season.  He also admitted he was surprised to see LeBron actually rocking the very yellow and red “Carmex” branded sneakers.

Thoughts?  Would you wear them?

VIDEO: Lebron Scores 10 points in 1:46

February 15, 2013 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Nope, it’s not quite as unbelievable as Reggie Miller’s record-setting 8 points in 11 seconds performance, but watching Lebron James effortlessly knock down contested shots is still pretty impressive.

Despite his hot hand, James snapped his 6-game streak of scoring at least 30 points on 60 percent shooting, last night.  He just fell short, ending with 39 points, 12 rebounds, and a 58 shooting percentage, which was enough to seal the win and sweep the Oklahoma City Thunder for the season.  The final score was 110-100.

#ThrowbackThursday: 2003 NBA Draft Revisited

June 28, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via Sports Illustrated

June 26, 2003.

That was the day LeBron James, Darko Milicic, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade were drafted into the NBA.  To date, the 2003 draft class is considered one of the greatest of all time because of the influx of talent.  And considering four of the five top picks have all earned rings *side eyes Melo*, there’s a great chance they’ll continue to reign supreme for quite some time.

I remember the 2003 NBA Draft vividly.  All of the hype surrounding the top high school player in the country, LeBron, nauseated me.  Players that balled their asses off in the NCAA Tournament, the biggest platform for any prospective NBA star, paled in comparison to all of the attention LeBron received.  Every athlete dreamed of making the cover of Sports Illustrated or being featured on ESPN, and LeBron had checked those boxes off before graduating high school.  Sure I recognized his talent and athleticism, but I couldn’t help but think it was a lot excessive and premature.

When Carmelo Anthony, who I thought was more of a proven talent (highly skewed by my Big East bias, I admit), dominated the NCAA Tournament and carried Syracuse to a championship that season, I hoped his star power would dim LeBron’s.  Or when D. Wade was the breakout star of the tourney, I thought he too could pose a threat to LeBron’s impending succession to the throne.  Not so.  Just look at the above image of Melo, James, and D. Wade sharing the SI cover. Melo and Wade were such non-factors compared to LeBron that they weren’t even worthy of a full headshot.  Straight shameless.

I’m not even going to mention Darko or Bosh because well…it’s nine years later and we all know how the story unfolds. Darko is a bust. Bosh is bullied. Melo is a loser. D. Wade is a 2x NBA champ. And LeBron finally justified the hype.

But what was said about these guys immediately after they were drafted?  ESPN’s Chad Ford provided analysis on each pick.  Since today is #ThrowbackThursday, let’s revisit what he said about the Top 5.  Save for Darko, he wasn’t too far off.

1.  LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

Ford’s Take:  The party actually started in Cleveland weeks ago.  Will he be the Cavs savior?  It depends upon who GM Jim Paxson gives him to play with.  As good as LeBron is, he can’t play one on five.  Are Ricky Davis, Darius Miles and Dajuan Wagner the right running mates?  Can LeBron handle the pressure of turning around the franchise?  The interviews? The hype? The large target placed squarely on his chest?  No one in recent history has come into the league with more talent and more expectations.  If he actually lives up to it all, then we actually had him underrated as a human being.

2. Darko Milicic, Detroit Pistons

Ford’s Take:  Darko is really one of a kind.  He runs the floor, handles the ball, shoots the NBA 3 and plays with his back to the basket, so you can slot him in at the 3, 4, or 5 positions.  OK, a few other guys can do that too; what sets Darko apart is his toughness in the post.  You have to love a guy who has the footwork to spin by an opponent but still prefers to lower a shoulder and bang.  Fact is, Milicic plays in attack-mode at both ends of the floor.  The more you push, the more he pushes back.  While he won’t be asked to carry the Pistons, he’s capable of doing this earlier than you think.

3. Carmelo Anthony, Denver Nuggets

Ford’s Take:  Of the top three, Carmelo is the most accomplished. He will be a dominant NBA scorer.  Every time scouts begin talking about him, the names Antoine Walker and Glenn Robinson are evoked. That’s not bad company.  But is the guy to turn the Nuggets around? Combine him with Nene Hilario and you have a start.  But the Nuggets need a lot of help.  Carmelo can score 20 points a night, but the team won’t win unless guys like Gilbert Arenas and Corey Maggette decide to join the Nuggets in free agency this summer.

4. Chris Bosh, Toronto Raptors

Ford’s Take:  The Raptors tried to trade this pick, but couldn’t find any takers.  Bosh was the next best player on the board.  As his size and with his skill set, his upside is similar to a Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnett.  The Raptors have to be patient, but he’ll be worth it.  He exceeded expectations during his freshman year and several NBA GMs think he’ll do it again.  He’s already gained 15 pounds of muscle since he left his school. Once he gets stronger physically, I think the Big Three of the draft will be the Big Four.

5.  Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat

Ford’s Take: The first big shocker of the draft.  Pat Riley really wanted a player who could contribute right away.  Wade can play in the backcourt with Eddie Jones.  He’s got a good handle and can play point at times. He’s got a great first step and is a solid defender.  He’s on the of most mature players in the draft.  The biggest issue?  The Heat desperately need a good shooter in the backcourt.  For all of Wade’s strengths, he isn’t a good long range shooter. Interesting pick.  Obviously, by passing on Chris Kaman and Maciej Lampe, Riley doesn’t like projects.

While the 2003 draft was arguably the best class of all time, a lot of bums emerged from that class too.  This pick by pick analysis of the complete class proves it.

#ThrowbackThursday: Kevin Durant vs LeBron James

June 21, 2012 by Shana Renee 1 Comment

Photo via streetball.com

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday moment is inspired by tonight’s possible closeout game between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.

We’re going to take it back….all the way back to last summer when NBA players were locked out and hooping it up in summer leagues across the country.  One game in particular stands out…Kevin Durant’s 59-point performance against LeBron James.  He dropped 32.  Sure these were five-on-five games, but no one else mattered.  The much hyped matchup between the NBA’s two biggest stars was the main attraction and it did not disappoint.  KD and LeBron battled all game, and despite LeBron’s team emerging victorious, Durant’s impressive 59-point performance gave him the edge over LeBron that night.

Check it out:

This game was the talk of last summer.  But now we’re back to business as usual and OKC is on the verge of elimination.  For the first time ever, LeBron is one game away from FINALLY winning a ring.  If OKC has any chance at derailing LeBron’s championship run, KD needs to respond with one of his epic summer league performances AND the win.  Let’s hope he brings it.

Hard Knocks Returns, Serena’s Out, T.O.’s Cut, and much more!

May 30, 2012 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Photo via AP

What to blog about for Wednesday? Well, lots happened on Tuesday and I just couldn’t decide.  When this happens, I usually do one of two things.  Either allow my inability to focus overtake me and say eff it.  Or, I summarize the day of events with quick hits on some (not all!) of the most newsworthy topics.  Today I went with the latter, and even included what to watch for tonight.  If you want more details on each story, click the blue links.

Let’s get into it.

NFL

It’s a Hard Knock life, for….the Miami Dolphins

FINALLY! It’s been confirmed that the Miami Dolphins will be the featured team on the 2012 edition of HBO’s Hard Knocks series.  After being turned down by virtually every other team in the league, the Dolphins stepped up to take advantage of this great opportunity.  Aside from Reggie Bush, viewers will be able to get to know the team’s new head coach, Joe Philbin.  Another intriguing storyline surrounding the team is its quarterback situation.  Who will ultimately land that job?  Will it be last year’s starter Matt Moore who redeemed the team from an 0-7 start, veteran David Garrard, or rookie Mike Tannenhill?  I guess we’ll have to tune in to find out.  The new season debuts on August 7 at 10PM/EST.  Will you be watching?

T.O.’s cut from IFL team

And just when you thought Terrell Owens’s appearance on Dr. Phil and the public humiliation that came along with it was the lowest point of his career, he went and out did himself.  Yesterday Owens was released by the Allen Wranglers, an Indoor Football League team.   Why?  Apparently, he violated his contract.  Although T.O. was only contractually obligated to play in home games, the Wranglers are counting T.O.’s refusal to play in two upcoming road games that impact their playoff hopes as a violation.  He also was a no-show at a mandatory children’s hospital community event.  Or, in other words, the team wanted an out and T.O. gave it to them.  They finally recognized what everyone in the NFL has known for years, he’s impossible to deal with.  Sure, signing T.O. was a great PR stunt for the league initially, but the buzz has since died. Yet, T.O.’s selfish and entitled attitude has remained.  When it’s all said and done, paying Owens a six figure salary and giving him a 30 percent stake in the team simply wasn’t worth it to the Wranglers.  As a result, he’s off the team, out of a check, and his 30 percent stake in the team.  Only time will tell where he goes from here.

NBA

Who gone stop ‘em?  The Spurs that is.

After defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 120-111, the Spurs notched their 20th consecutive win.  Yes, OKC put up a good fight, and even came within 7 points within the final two minutes of the game, but even that and Kevin Durant’s 31 points, Russell Westbrook’s 27 points, and James Harden’s 30 points weren’t enough to stop Greg Popovich’s team.  They’re so good, they’re like a machine.  Now the series shifts to OKC.  The Thunder have the livest home crowd in the league.  I expect them to help will the Thunder to their first win against the Spurs, but that’s about it.  Spurs in 5.

Miami Heat vs Boston Celtics

Game 2 of  the Heat and Celtics tips-off tonight at 8:30PM/ET on ESPN.  Despite hating both teams, it appears that I hate the Celtics slightly less than the Heat, because that’s who I’m rooting for.  #TeamBeatTheHeat

NBA Draft Lottery

This goes down tonight on ESPN at 8PM/ET.  Michael Jordan’s awful Charlotte Bobcats have the greatest chance, 25%, of landing Anthony Davis, presumably the No. 1 pick from Kentucky.  The Washington Wizards are a close second with 19.9%.

Straight Nonsense

DeShawn Stevenson, NJ Nets, has a real live and what appears to be a functioning ATM in his kitchen. Yes, really.

 NHL

Stanley Cup Begins Tonight

Tonight the LA Kings host the NJ Devils in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup.  The game starts at 8PM/EST on NBC.

SOCCER

USA vs Brazil Tonight

Tonight is a busy night for sports.  But in between the Stanley Cup, Eastern Conference Finals, NBA Draft Lottery, and MLB games, be sure to check out the US Men’s National Soccer team as they play Brazil.  This game is exciting because USA’s confidence is soaring after their 5-1 victory against Scotland. Will they be able to prove that the drumming handed to Scotland wasn’t a fluke?  Tune in to find out tonight.  The match begins at 7:50PM/ET on ESPN2.

TENNIS

Serena Williams Out

I’m still at a loss for words.  My favorite, Serena Williams, lost in the first round of the French Open yesterday.  Virgine Razzano of France, who is ranked 111th in the world, beat her in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.  I have nothing else to say about this.

Women’s NCAA Basketball

Pat Summitt Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Obama presented Coach Pat Summitt with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House, yesterday.  In April, Summitt, who’s suffering from dementia, resigned after coaching 38 seasons, 1,098 victories, and eight NCAA titles.  The Medal of Freedom is the highest honor a civilian can receive, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving.  Congrats to Coach Summitt.
