UPDATED: Today’s Sports Tweet: Usain Bolt on today’s race (Results w/ video)

May 26, 2011 by Shana Renee 2 Comments

The road to the 2012 Olympic Games has officially started for track and field Olympic hopefuls.

Today the fastest men and women in the world are gathered in Rome to compete in the Samsung Diamond League.

This event also marks the return of track and field’s most electrifying personality and dominant competitor, Usain Bolt.  The highly anticipated race will allow us to see Bolt compete for the first time since he lost to Tyson Gay in August 2010.  Following the loss, Bolt immediately decided to take time off from the sport to properly recover from an ailing lower back.

During a press conference for today’s race, Bolt admitted that he’s nervous for the first time in his career.  He also tweeted the following:

One more day to go I don’t know how to feel real talk lol

— Usain St. Leo Bolt (@usainbolt) May 25, 2011

Hopefully Bolt can channel all of these mixed emotions and nerves into an impressive performance because the triple Olympic and World champion will be participating in the the marquee matchup of the day against Asafa Powell.  The fellow Jamaicans are competing in the 100m and have both held the world record for this event at one time.  In 2007, Powell set a new world record when he ran 9.74, but Bolt crushed his time by running 9.58 at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Bolt, who’s bulked up since his last race, has been hyping this event via twitter for the past few weeks, tweeting on May 9, “Rome is where it all begins ppl…26/05/11.”

This day has finally arrived and we are hours away from the showdown between Powell and Bolt; both with something to prove.  Bolt must prove that he’s retained his speed, strength, and power needed to continue his reign as the king of men’s track and field.  And for Powell, despite a 9.95 win on May 15 in Shanghai, Powell still needs to prove that he can outrun Bolt.  After all, it’s been almost three years since he last defeated his rival.

On the women’s side, the race to watch includes American Sprinters Allyson Felix and Sanya Richards-Ross.  They will both compete in the 200 and 400. Felix is the world champion in the 200, while Richards-Ross holds the title in the 400.  Both women have stated that their goal is to run the 200/400 double next year in London.  Today will be their first test and a possible preview of what to expect at the 2012 Games.

Felix is a three-time world champion in the 200, while Richards-Ross holds the title in the 400.

The women kick off today’s events at 2:30 pm/et and the men compete at 3:45 pm/et.  I’ll update this post with video when it’s available.

UPDATE:

Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell delivered a thrilling race which lived up to the hype!  In a photo finish, Bolt pulled off the a win with a time of 9.91. Powell clocked in at 9.93.  Third and fourth place went to France’s Christophe Lemaitre, 10.0, and Kim Collins of St. Kitts, 10.12; respectively.

Today’s Sports Tweet: Marbury’s Back

May 24, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

While everyone is discussing how the Oklahoma City Thunder collapsed against the Dallas Mavericks last night, I’m on my New York ish; which had me wondering about Stephon Marbury.

And what do you know, the BK native is also in a NY state of mind.  He just touched down in NYC after finishing up another successful season of playing in the China Basketball Association (CBA).

Last year, Steph made his CBA debut for the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons, but this season he played for the Foshan Dralions where he earned $80,000 per month.

In his fist two seasons in China, Steph has averaged 24 ppg and 7.6 rpg.  Before heading east, he hadn’t averaged numbers like that since 2001 when he played for the New Jersey Nets.

However, despite balling, his team failed to reach the playoffs for the second season in a row.  Same ish, different country.

Check out “the best point guard“….in China, as he tweeted his NYC arrival.

Today’s Sports Tweet: Tracy McGrady on Mavs/Thunder

Tracy McGrady on Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Durant’s Game 1 performances.

Tracy McGrady

Indeed.

Dirk Nowitzki played the game of his career last night.  He scored 48 points on 12-15 shooting, and 24-24 FTs.  That’s 80% from the field and 100% from the foul line.  Combined, he made 92% of his shots.

Marinate on that for a second.

That means Dirk only missed THREE shots the entire game.

Really?  Yes, really.

It’s as if Dirk is finally playing to his full potential.  In his 13 year career, he’s never played with this much intensity and desire to win in the playoffs.  Even with the Dallas Mavericks’ 2006 NBA Finals appearance against the Miami Heat, Dirk allowed himself to be outplayed by Dwyane Wade.  So after many failed attempts, it appears that Dirk understands what’s at stake and has accepted the responsibility to carry the team.  So far, he’s writing a hell of a story for himself.

In the last series, we saw that the LA Lakers had absolutely no answer for Dirk.  And although it’s only been one game, it seems that OKC is succumbing to the same fate.  Despite their best effort to stop Dirk, a total of six players gave it a shot, he could not and would not be denied.  He was an unstoppable force inside the perimeter.  And even when OKC tried to double team him, which wasn’t often, he’d just find the open man and they’d knock down the shot. Dirk was certainly the best player on the court last night, but his teammates, J.J. Barea (21 pts.), Jason Terry (24 pts.), and Shawn Marion (11 pts.) also came through in a major way.  It was just one of those nights for Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks.

However, the encouraging news for the Thunder is that despite Dirk’s record-setting performance, they still had a chance to win.  While the Mavericks took the lead for good in the second quarter, OKC played hard until the final buzzer sounded.  Kevin Durant was Kevin Durant and put up 40 points. But after getting a triple double in Game 7 against the Memphis Grizzlies, the erratic and sporadic shooting (shouts to Clyde Frazier) of Russell Westbrook returned.  He only shot 20% from the field last night. If OKC wants a chance to win, Westbrook needs to play smarter.  Same old story.

While the Thunder is a team made up of young, fearless players that have nothing to lose, the Mavs are the complete opposite.  They’re almost all older players, nearing the ends of their careers and have everything to lose.  Their sense of urgency is much greater, but will it be enough to will them to the NBA Finals?

All signs point to an exciting series between these two, but this round went to Dallas. Old School 1- New School 0.

Game 2 will be played on Thursday at 9PM/ET on ESPN.

Today’s Sports Tweet: Zab Judah on Manny Pacquiao

May 17, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

After Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO) defeated Shane Mosley in a unanimous decision on May 7, the focus shifted to which fighters are next in line to square off against the Welterweight Champion.  Since talks have stalled between Floyd Mayweather, another rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO) seems likely for this November.

However, if Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO) had his way, he and Pacquiao would face each other sooner than a speculated 2012 PPV fight. He believes that no one is excited to see Pacquiao and Marquez square off for the third time, and that a Pacquiao-Judah bill would be more entertaining.

If Judah is serious about getting in the ring with Pacquiao, he needs to accept the fight against WBA champ, Amir Khan and win.  Khan has been vocal about wanting to fight Judah, but Judah has dismissed the matchup saying, “No disrespect to Amir Khan but it’s a step down for myself.  He’s a kid.  You know what I’m saying?  He’s just coming on to the scene.”

Instead, Judah maintains that the most logical move for himself would be to fight Pacquiao and yesterday tweeted the following:

What do you think?  Does Judah stand a chance against Pacquiao?

Judah’s speed could be a challenge for Pacquiao, but I don’t see Judah being able to counter Pac’s power.  And this video of Judah getting knocked out by Kosta Tszyu doesn’t help change my mind.

Today’s Sports Tweet: Patrick McEnroe

May 16, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Before yesterday’s Italian Open final, tennis great Patrick McEnroe predicted that top-ranked Raphael Nadal would defeat second-ranked Novak Djokovic and win the tournament.  Unfortunately, for McEnroe and Nadal, Djokovic won 6-4, 6-4.

This latest win by Djokovic makes it the fourth time he’s beat Nadal in a final this year and the second time on clay.  Last week, Nadal lost to Djokovic in the Madrid Open.  More importantly, this victory allowed Djokovic to extend his 2011 unbeaten streak to 37 matches.  If you go back to 2010, Djokovic streak is 39.

The record for the longest unbeaten streak stands at 42 and goes back to 1984?  Do you know holds this record?  Patrick’s brother, John McEnroe.

Perhaps McEnroe’s rooting interest had less to do with Nadal being a better player and more to do with preserving his brother’s record.  Regardless, when a fan called him out, he admitted that Djokovic’s victory was a surprise.

Today’s Sports Tweet: D. Wade on All-NBA First Team Snub

May 13, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Yesterday the NBA announced the 2010-2011 All-NBA first, second, and third teams.  Here are their picks:

This season’s first team includes:  Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Lebron James, and Derrick Rose.

The second team includes:  Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki, Amar’e Stoudemire, Dwyane Wade, and Russell Westbrook.

The third team includes:  Lamarcus Aldridge, Al Horford, Manu Ginobli, Chris Paul, and Zach Randolph.

Of the first teamers, Lebron James was the only unanimous selection among the voters.  This is surprising because it suggests voters doubted whether or not this year’s MVP, Derrick Rose, was hands down the best point guard in the league.

Another eyebrow raiser is D. Wade’s exclusion from the first team.  After Wade failed to make the first and second NBA All-Defensive Teams earlier this week, fans are really taking exception to Wade losing out to Kobe Bryant…again.

So, was Wade snubbed?  Let’s compare stats and examine this.

Kobe Bryant:  25.3 PPG, 4.7 APG, 5.1 RPG, .451 FG%, 33.9 MPG

Dwyane Wade: 25.5 PPG, 4.6 APG, 6.4 RPG, .500 FG%, 37.1 MPG

Now let’s look at their head-to-head matchups.

In their two meetings this season, Kobe averaged 20.5 PPG, 4.5 APG, 4 RPG, .377 FG%, and 40 MPG. Wade averaged 19 PPG, 5.5 APG, 5 RPG, .371 FG%, and 39.5 MPG.

Based on numbers alone, their stats are pretty even; however, I’d say that Wade has a slight edge because of his higher FG% throughout the season.  Unlike Kobe, D. Wade isn’t always the Heat’s number one scoring option.  Yet, despite sharing the ball with Lebron James, Wade managed to get off better shots than Bryant.  His ability to get open for better looks at the basket can’t be overlooked.

However, in Kobe’s defense, it’s worth mentioning that he averaged just as many points, assists, and slightly less rebounds while playing about 3 minutes less than Wade for the season.  So, although Bryant’s FG% was lower than Wade’s, when Kobe was on the court, he made the most of his minutes.

After comparing stats, it doesn’t seem like one significantly out performed the other, which makes this a toss up.  Experts, journalists, and fans can make a case for either player.

And while Wade appreciates the fan support, it doesn’t seem like he’s tripping off of this too much. He had this to say:

I wanna thnk all my fans for there support and concerns..just know I dnt determine my success as a professional by individual awards..

— Way of WADE (@DwyaneWade) May 12, 2011

I feel him.  After all, his Heat are four wins away from the NBA Finals, while Kobe Bryant is questioning his life’s existence after his expeditious exit from the Semifinals.

Today’s Sports Tweet: Jay Feely re: Hopkins’ McNabb comments

May 12, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Yesterday Bernard Hopkins’ made headlines, not because of his upcoming boxing match and Jean Pascal, but because of remarks he made about NFL player Donovan McNabb not being black enough.

If you missed it, Philly.com reports Hopkins said,

McNabb had a privileged childhood in suburban Chicago and, as a result, is not black enough or tough enough, at least compared with, say, himself, Michael Vick and Terrell Owens.

Forget this, Hopkins said, pointing to his own dark skin. He’s got a suntan. That’s all.

Why do you think McNabb felt he was betrayed? Because McNabb is the guy in the house, while everybody else is on the field. He’s the one who got the extra coat. The extra servings. You’re our boy, Hopkins said, patting a reporter on the back in illustration.  He thought he was one of them.

Once this news hit the net, everyone sounded off and shared a similar reaction as NFK kicker Jay Feely,

Feely is correct.  For whatever reason, McNabb is an easy target.  Maybe it’s because he refuses to engage in a public feud mediated by the media.  I don’t know.  However, what I do know is that Hopkins needs go somewhere and sit down. His comments, without a doubt, show just how moronic and ignorant he is.  And quite frankly, if Hopkins’ comments and actions are a reflection of someone’s deep rooted “blackness”, then y’all might as well snatch my “black card” too.  I don’t feel that any of Hopkins’ actions personify who I am as a person and I’m 100% ok with that.

On May 21, Hopkins will face Jean Pascal for the light heavyweight title, for the second time.  I hope Hopkins goes down swinging, for the second time.

Today’s Sports Tweet: John Wall & Andray Blatche

May 11, 2011 by Shana Renee Leave a Comment

Yesterday the Washington Wizards unveiled its new team uniforms and logos.  Can you say what’s old is new again?

The “new look” of the organization looks very familiar to that of the old Washington Bullets.  Long gone is the teal color that has represented the team for the past 14 years.  Instead, the organization, with the help of Adidas, adopted a “new”, patriotic colorway of red, white, blue with horizontal stripes, which is now consistent with the WNBA’s Washington Mystis and NHL’s Washington Capitals.

They also turned back the hands of time when it came to the team’s new logo and incorporated an outstretched hand, a key component of the old Bullets’ identity.

The other element to the new secondary logo includes the iconic Washington Monument topped with a star.

When new owner Ted Leonsis took over the team, fans used that opportunity to share how unhappy they continued to be with the teal color; which they felt always seemed out of place in the nation’s capital.  Thankfully for the fans, Leonsis listened.  Short of changing the team’s name back to Bullets, he pushed the envelope as far as possible.

Yesterday John Wall and Andray Blatche tweeted that they’re happy with the change.

I have to agree with them. I prefer the “new” look, but that could be because I remember the old look of the Bullets.  I’m not even a fan of the team and I never fully adjusted to the idea of the Washington Wizards, so I can only imagine how true fans felt. Plus, the “new” look helps close the chapter on the Gilbert Arenas era, which makes the overhaul 100% worth it, in my opinion!

So, what do you think?  Is this “new” look an improvement over the old Wizards look?
