The power of a pose.
Serena Williams after her historic 22nd Grand Slam championship title. The heart of a champion, the strength of a warrior, the fire of a lioness, and the soul of a butterfly.
With her victory, suddenly I felt lighter. The emotional distress of this week’s tragic events vanished; swept away in rippling waves of black girl joy that had been absent from my spirit all week. For everything the American media portrays us NOT to be, and the International media misunderstands us to be, Serena’s victorious match and powerful pose, on the sacred grounds of Wimbledon, demonstrated otherwise. To paraphrase Jesse Williams: we are magic and we are indeed real.
Next stop for the Queen of the Court — winning a doubles Wimbledon title with sister Venus, winning gold at the Olympics, and #23 at the U.S. Open.
Go black girl, go!
